For many of us, the idea of losing a loved one to suicide may feel unimaginable. Rachel Zimmerman’s excellent memoir, Us, After, doesn’t ask us to imagine. It unspools in vivid, documentary detail how that loss played out for her in ways that are rarely talked about – from her furious sense of betrayal, to the emptiness of her bed, to the clumsy condolences that rankled her wound. Above all, it charts her journey from bottomless grief to the new resilience she must claim for her daughters and herself. In that sense, it’s a page-turning survival story. You can’t help marveling that she made it out.
While reading it, I often found myself circling back to the mysteries of love and loss that echo through Zimmerman’s passages: How much can we ever really know another person? What do we owe each other in life and in death? Who do we live for? And how do we live without them?
The brilliance of Zimmerman’s memoir is helping us see these questions – not hypotheticals – for the urgent, life-defining directives that they are.

How can a family ever heal itself after something like this? It seems unthinkable to pick up the pieces after such a tragedy, and yet, the love this mother has for her daughters and that she still feels for her husband, their father, is so great that they find their way forward into a new and dare I say even more beautiful life than before. I cried along with this family as they grieved and rejoiced with them when they overcame. It’s a story of impossibility and yet, it happens in vivid detail. Rachel is such a gorgeous writer that she invites her readers into every experience along with her; you’re feeling and living it all right alongside her. There are Brooklyn streets, Wellfleet beaches, and Cambridge homes that I will never forget because of this family.
I never thought I would be writing a review recommending a book that touches the subject of suicide but I am. I teach memoir writing, and I tell my students that memoir is, in short, telling a story of “you used to be this, now you are this, and the memoir is telling us how you changed.” Us, After is that, 100%. Every page leaves you hanging, and then glad you read it.
This is one memoir you do not want to miss.

This book is a memoir, but that description doesn’t quite do. It’s a brave and unique tale. A woman staggers and schleps her way through unbearable grief after suddenly losing her beloved husband to suicide, all the while caring for her kids and working. But this same woman, a veteran news reporter, brings every skill to learn what happened.
What happened was that amid the rich and lovely stew of a young marriage, Rachael Zimmerman’s husband, Seth Teller, climbs out of bed one morning, and soon after, with no warning, jumps to his death off Boston’s Tobin Bridge.
Ms. Zimmerman’s generous descriptions of the shock, confusion, and grief that followed is matched with her need to learn why a brilliant and prospering MIT professor, clearly in love with his family and his work, would leave this world forever.
The book is a tale of his family’s survival so poignant it left me wishing I could have helped. It’s a mystery story too: What does science know about the psychology of a suicide, especially one that comes out of the blue? Ms. Zimmerman pursues every possible source for answers, academia, therapists, even a guy who jumped off the Tobin Bridge years earlier and survived.
The book’s unique blend of personal suffering and dogged research should make it a classic in the field of mental health and assigned reading for students of mental health care. They won’t soon forget that suicide can absolutely maim those left behind.
But it’s a remarkable read for anyone. The author is delightful: witty, acerbic, self-aware, and dare I say it? Even entertaining. And I can personally attest to her authenticity. I worked alongside her in the 1990s covering the Washington State Legislature. The book is Rachel Zimmerman from the first page to the last.

Zimmerman deftly deployed her craft as a journalist to render a deeply riveting account of the death by suicide of her MIT professor husband, and the path forward for the family he left behind. Always centering her children, she unabashedly dove into making sense of the tragedy with a kind of steadfast focus that evolved over time. One learns a lot about this family and I found myself cheering them on when not weeping with them as Zimmerman and her children emerge from the inconceivable trauma of the seemingly senseless death.
