The Family Across the Street, was my first exposure to author Nicole Trope, but will not be my last. I have already purchased her book, The Boy in the Photo.

This 249-page suspense novel kept me glued to my chair rapidly reading through the wee hours of the morning and wishing I would have begun reading it earlier in the day.

Trope knows how to grab the reader at the onset and hold on to the reader throughout the entire compelling tale.

At times I was a bit confused by characters; however, I figured it out and I realize that was the author’s ingenious intent.

Set-in modern-day Australia the story begins with two dysfunctional families. Logan and his sister, Maddy’s parents were terrible parents that had a negative impact on their children’s lives. Their father always said that Logan would end up in jail. Associating with the wrong people, Logan did end up going to jail after home invasions and smoking a powerful drug. Maddy ended up with Patrick a young man who was severely abused by his father. Patrick’s mom and dad divorced, and his father later committed suicide, but not before he manipulated Patrick into believing that his mother was the source of all of his problems. Maddy ended up in a Melbourne hospital on life support with an induced coma after Patrick beat her nearly to death.

Another family, Katherine and John were having troubles of their own. Katherine believed that John was having an affair after she saw heart emojis on his cell phone texts. The strain of raising their 5-year-old twins, George and Sophie was negatively impacting their family and they seemed to be falling out of love with each other. After their elderly neighbors, Lou and Gladys heard John’s tires squealing as he left for work Gladys became annoyed. When she noticed that the Katherine and John’s blinds were closed and the children had not left for school, she worried that something was not right at Katherines home. Likewise, Debby’s husband Logan, a postal worker was concerned when he tried to deliver a laptop to Katherine’s address. She refused to open the door for a signature resulting in him unable to deliver the computer. As he continued his postal route, he began to think something was wrong at that address. When he tried again, he heard a child at the door make a remark that amplified that concern.

The remainder of the tail deals with suspenseful happenings within Katherine’s home and Gladys and Logan worrying about it.

This is an enthralling suspense thriller that I recommend as a must read to fans of this genre. It is the best that I have read in years.

“She opened her arms and I showed her the gun. I could have made a different choice. I could have stepped into those arms and changed my life.”

Something is very wrong at 24 Hogarth Street, yet the two people who spot the air of menace and danger have a history with the police and so will they be taken seriously.

Gladys stares at her neighbour’s house, where there is no sign of movement and, the closed blinds look strangely ominous and secretive. Gladys instinctively knows something is wrong, but she has contacted the police 12 times this year already and now they see her as an interfering neighbour.

Logan, a reformer criminal and delivery driver seeks to deliver a computer to the house where Katherine lives with her husband John and five-year-old twins. Yet he has encountered nothing but obstacles in his desire to help whoever the woman inside the house is, and by the time he finds out if something is or is not going on, because she will not open the door, “… he could be back in jail just for daring to exist after a prison sentence”

The story is interspersed with feelings from the man holding Katherine and her two children at gun point. He is going to kill her and will not spare the children, if need be, but it is clear he is harbouring a lot of pain and hurt and believes it may be necessary “…. to blow up everything around you just to prove you’ve been hurt”, because one day you “… realise that the love of your life no longer thinks you’re the love of her life” but really this man is a resentful rage machine and he is prepared to punish her.

This was a pleasant read from the beginning and then the gear changed in the second part of the book, the suspense was at a different level, the anticipation was palatable and when I read through the plot and the twist, I almost wanted to go back to the beginning of the book to grasp what it was I had missed in the first place. A great read and highly recommended.

When I read the description on the back cover I was so excited to read this book. I didn’t realize it was based in Australia so I was confused at 1st when they mentioned weather/temperatures but I quickly realized they must be referring to Celsius rather than Fahrenheit temps (I live in the U.S).

The books switches between different characters’ viewpoints, which adds to the suspense and mystery a little bit. But it also starts to feel like a frustrating read about halfway through. In the conclusion, it makes sense as to why it is written the way it is, but I’ll admit that it felt a little complicated and confusing at times.

In short, I would recommend the book to friends, but I would warn them that
    1. The description on the back cover is somewhat misleading

    And
    2. It becomes a little frustrating with the scattered storylines and it almost feels like work to carry on reading at times
BUT, if they power through the challenging parts, it will be worth it once you see the full picture.

Also, it does feel like the ending was a bit rushed but I don’t want to be too critical. Overall, I was satisfied with my purchase and I don’t have any regrets buying/reading this book!

I rarely give 5 star ratings, but had to with this book. I never saw the twist coming and it was a complete surprise as to who was committing the crime… I
Absolutely loved the setting in a suburban Australia neighbourhood, and loved the imagery of the screeching cicadas and hot day – so totally relatable, as I struggle through heatwave conditions myself as I read… All of the characters were great, and I loved how the story was written from each one’s point of view, even the perpetrator. There really wasn’t anything I could fault. Ms Trope should be congratulated because she has written an excellent, thrilling story. Can’t wait to read more of her work!

The description on the back cover is not at all accurate; not even close. It is a completely different book than what is described on the back cover. I am not sure if that was intentional as a way to hook readers or if it was just lazy. But either way, I felt duped by the back cover.

The book takes place in just a day. It starts out pretty good. In the prologue, one of the neighbors is introduced and then never heard from again. I found that really weird. I thought for sure she would be connected somehow but that never happened. I am not sure why she was even introduced to begin with.

The book is told from the perspective of a multiple characters and dives a little into their lives. I thought some of the deep dive into their back stories were a little boring and unnecessary.

The book started to drag towards the end because it took forever to get to the end. The twist was actually pretty good. I did not see it coming. There were small clues throughout the book that the person keeping one of the characters hostage was not who you thought it was. However, the reveal of the twist was poorly written in my opinion. I had to re-read it a few times to make sure I was reading it correctly. It seemed kind of sloppy in the reveal. And the last 20 or so pages were so boring, I just skimmed right through them to the end.

Overall, this book will be a quick read. The twist is decent but it drags in several places and the flipping around to different characters get tedious after a while. The storytelling was a little sloppy in places. But whoever wrote the back cover description should be fired because the book was not the way it was described AT ALL. I think it actually would have been a better book if it was anything like the description.

Have to say it kept me interested from the start. Well written and a surprise ending. Though it was a bit off putting by how each character is written in separate chapters so pretty much a back and forth, however the storyline kept me interested.
