Not only is this cookbook perfectly curated and detailed, but the author herself is a very warm and friendly person. I have reached out on Instagram on multiple occasions, only to get incredibly nice replies. I highly recommend any of her cookbooks, classes, as well as all other content.

This is the best authentic mexican cookbook I have ever looked at. The recipes are true, every day foods in Mexican households. The recipes are translated well, easy to follow, & flavors are spot on! 10/10 recommend this book!

Easy to follow recipes using readily available ingredients for great Mexican dishes.

Authentic, fantastic Mexican cookbook. Keep finding myself going back to it. The essentials are simple but great (corn tacos, tortillas, guacamole, pico de gallo). Every main dish I’ve tried has been great. Look forward to trying the others.

I have been looking forward to this book for a while so when availability in Italy became possible, I bought it immediately and I’m glad I did. As a homesick Texan, I miss the food I grew up eating. My grandmothers and Aunts were always in the kitchen and looking at these recipes brings me back to my childhood. I have tried a few of Mely Martinez’s recipes from her blog and they are delicious and authentic. I just received it today and have already recommended it to a friend!

Having longed for a Mexican cookbook that was based around home cooking as well as one that featured easy-to-find, affordable ingredients, The Mexican Home Kitchen fills an important niche in my cookbook collection. The book begins with a handy primer on Mexican ingredients before moving on to explain needed tools and equipment. After that is a handy guide to roasting the most commonly called for vegetables in the following recipes, as well as recipes for flour and corn tortillas. After this introductory material, the book is divided into the following chapters: soups, main dishes, salsas and sides, and desserts and drinks.
The majority of ingredients called for in these recipes can easily be found at your local big box grocery chain. Flipping through the recipes really doesn’t turn up many hard-to-find ingredients. Some of you may not be able to locate certain kinds of peppers (arbol or guajillo come to mind) or maybe even some types of Mexican cheeses (like panela or oaxaca), but if you read the primer at the beginning of the book on Mexican ingredients, the author has already thoughtfully listed substitutes for you which make these recipes easy to shop for. Also to be praised is the author’s reliance on economical cuts of meat. Chuck steaks, ground beef, chicken, and pork shoulder are some of the proteins featured in entrees, and there are surprising cuts as well such as beef tongue. Not to worry if you aren’t a meat-eater, there are plenty of vegetarian dishes in this cookbook, both side dishes and entrees.
The majority of these recipes are easy to prepare. Easy to prepare means something different to all of us. This is not a mix five ingredients and bake for thirty minutes type cookbook, but for anyone with cooking experience, these recipes should be relatively simple to fix. The bulk of these recipes have 5-6 steps, all of which are well-explained, most of them featuring a full color photo of the finished product. A few dishes even have pictures of important steps in the preparation of the dish such as the Tamales de Pollo en Salsa Verde.
Also of importance for someone on the fence about trying this book is the face that sometimes a recipe involves cooking multiple components to make a complete dish. This is true of the aforementioned tamales de Pollo en Salsa Verde in which the recipe involves cooking chicken, making salsa, and mixing dough. The majority of recipes also include serving suggestions in which case you might need to serve some kind of suggested rice or beans out of the book which doesn’t personally bother me, but these suggestions could easily be amended by substituting convenience items from the grocery store such as ready made tortillas or canned beans–although you’d be missing a fine component of the meal.
The recipes seem to be dependable and flavorful. Everyone in the family enjoyed the Albondigas en Chipotle (Meatballs in Chipotle Sauce) as well as the too simple to be that good Tacos de Bistec (Steak Tacos). As the weather has turned cooler, we have enjoyed the Caldo de Pollo (chicken soup) and Sopa de Fideo (Mexican Noodle Soup).
This book is simple to shop from and a joy to cook from. I am sorry that I didn’t know of the author, Mely Martinez, until this year. She has written a book that many home cooks were sorely in need of, and I will be turning to it again and again this winter to add a little spice to my kitchen. Recommended.

I lived in Mexico for a number of years, and I found this cookbook to be not only authentic, but beautifully photographed and easy to read and follow the recipes. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone who enjoys authentic Mexican cuisine.

We are definitely a family that likes Mexican food, so this was a great addition to our kitchen!
Have made multiple full meals- sides and homemade tortillas included in that, since getting this one. As someone who watches carbs, I went thru and marked recipes I could have without changes, and those I could do if one or 2 things were changed. We have tried recipes we’ve never had before, and so far all have been successes. A wonderful cookbook to get the whole family involved with cooking meals.
Nice, glossy pages, pictures included on most pages really help make it beautiful, including pics of steps to making the tortillas. There are ‘notas’ on some recipes, about ways to cook, different ingredients you could use, how to store foods, and other helpful tips. There are lists of tools and equipment to learn about. Names of recipes in both languages which I think is a wonderful idea. Lots of instructions for each recipe. I also like the fact that it is a hardback cover. Ingredients shown in multiple ways- cups, quarts, and liters as an example, so no matter what you are used to- you are covered, awesome!

Obsessed with this cookbook! I have a ton of cookbooks and quite a few Mexican cookbooks. I will say the beauty of this book is that it is so many basic, staple recipes. The recipes and steps are so simple. I’ve always loved Mexican cooking but cooking for a family or with little time… it’s nice to have something that is simple and doesn’t need 10 different spices. She really understands what seasonings are needed that will truly bring out the authentic flavors in Mexican cooking. The recipes on her blog are just as amazing and flavorful. I’ve used this cookbook so many times this past year. A few of her recipes I’ve memorized and have become staples in our home, such as: Piccadillos, empanadas, caldo de pollo, all of her rice recipes, tacos de bistec, flautas de papa, carnitas (my husband brags about this recipe to everyone!), albondigas, tinga de pollo, pollo entomatado, tostadas dr pollo. Those are some of our favs. I also love that I can combine her recipes to make a meal or use sauces/salsas from other recipes for my own creations… for example if I don’t have pork I can still use a pork recipe for chicken. We use the meat recipe from empanadas to serve over rice or on tostadas… not always to make empanadas.
A must buy! You will not regret! Cant wait for many more cookbooks from Mely to come! Bravo on a tremendous job! Beautiful pictures and very tremendous taste. Haven’t tried one recipe that my family and I haven’t devoured yet. This includes young children who love your recipes and are able to assist in cooking each recipe. We thank you!
I will be sure to add photos of completed meals in future.
