I bought my Squier CV Jag about a year ago. “Love at first sight” doesn’t begin to describe it – that glossy, rich, retro look and feel? That’s basically how it sounds: full, solid…downright sexy.
The good stuff, up front:
P-J pickup configuration gives you that scooped out P sound and that clean J sound. You can make it growl, you can make it quack. I’m sure people with better ears than me can tell you how it’s not *quite* either, but for my money it is the best of both.
Thin J-style neck – I have big, meaty hands…and relatively short fingers. The more aggressive taper towards the head means, for me, that this bass has exceptional playability without sacrificing intonation the way that, say, a Mustang can (just my experience – ymmv).
The Jag has a C-shaped neck and a glossy finish all over. This is entirely a matter of preference – I like it, you may not.
Gorgeous to look at – I mean, I catch myself just ogling this thing at least once a day. Admittedly partly because I’d rather be jamming than working, but damn – just *look* at it!
Happy to report this bass doesn’t have that odious “bass boost” thing that some Jag models were boasting. If you know, you know, and if you don’t know, just know that you don’t want any sort of “bass booster” on your bass. I’m not referring to an active pickup here – the “bass boost” is a by all accounts junky circuit that’s supposed to add some growl to your low-end but (again, I’ve heard) mostly just makes it sound like your amp is blown out. To be clear: this guitar, thankfully, does *not* have that!
Volume and tone are pretty intuitive. Smooth controls that can be a bit delicate I learned (see below) but which provide for a mind-boggling array of tones. Control is common-sensical: Neck P pickup control is closer to the neck (where the P pickup is), bridge J pickup is closer to the bridge (ditto). Volume is the big silver knob on top, tone is a black ring around it. Cool, stylish, easy to use – but be mindful if you find it spinning too far and not stopping…
The Problems:
Take this with a grain of salt because I *love* my Jag – it’s my go to, and even now as I am shopping for something with a few more bells and whistles (24 fret, neck-through body, etc), the jag is my basis for comparison. The reason I’m not giving this a full 5 isn’t for the bass per se, but for the shipping and also for a factory QA issue.
Shipping: An absolutely ludicrous error on Amazon’s part. I ordered a bass, they shipped me a weight bench. I happened to catch the driver, so I sent him home with the bench, but then he apparently goofed and didn’t put the “returned” bench in the system, so I had to spend quite a bit of time on the phone with Amazon trying to get the mess sorted out. Eventually, they agreed to send me a new bass but only after I explained the issue no fewer than three times to three different CS reps.
Setup / QA: My jag has some pretty loose nuts – get the giggling out of your system and hear me out. Sometimes the cable jack sticks a bit because the geometry of the jack is slightly off. A quick twist puts it all right, but it’s a nuisance. What’s *not* a nuisance is having to re-solder the controls for my J (bridge) pickup because that nut was so loose that hand-tightening it eventually led to the connection being severed. There’s basically no reason for that to happen – and it’s an ugly smirch on the Fender / Squier brand name.
But for all that: I’ve been playing this bass for a year and I’m just as enamored with it as I was when I bought. I can’t see parting with it ever, and even when I “upgrade,” the Squire Jaguar Classic Vibe bass is going to have a prominent place in my low-end arsenal.

I have been playing bass guitar over 20 years . I have many makes and models. I have been hunting for a shorter scale bass for a while and came across this. The stacked knobs are awesome, and the 32 scale is super fast when combined with the jazz-style neck. The tone of the bass itself really blew me away. The tone omfg epic!!!! This bass made me actually think of selling others because they wont touch the tone this gets. Highly underrated, I cant recommend this bass enough. Dont get hung up on the fact that its not a true fender; this plays as well as any $1k+ instrument of its style IMO. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Sounds ok, plays ok. For not much more money, Sire’s U5 has a hum cancelling jazz pick up, better fret dressing and rolled edges, as well as the option to run your strings through the body, which allows you to buy regular strings instead of more expensive short scale strings. Also, mine came with an improperly drilled hole for one of the control panel screws, which will require drilling out, gluing a dowel in and then re drilling.
Save your money. Buy a Sire U5.

FRET BUZZ! Every string, every fret. The amplified sound is just constant rattle and buzz. I did a setup and got the buzz down to just 10th fret & up. Took to Fender authorized service center to see if the warranty can fix this. He said it was “in desperate need of a setup”, but his setup just brought the buzz back to all frets! And the setup isn’t covered by warranty but he didn’t get my authorization before doing it! Asked me for $70!🤣 LOL AYFKM? I wouldn’t pay it.
Very disappointing, as other than the incessant buzz, it’s a great bass. Pickups are as good as can be expected at this price point. Very playable. Love the 32″ scale. Love that each pickup has a volume and tone, instead of a switch, so you can blend the levels.
This was the first time I used single coils in my noisy rig, but they are surprisingly quiet. So much more clarity and brightness than the humbucker basses I have.
But the fret buzz makes it complete garbage. It’s a hideous sound.
I’m so sick of buzzy basses! $500 isn’t cheap. How much do I have to spend to get a bass without fret buzz?! Frustrated. Sick of searching and waiting and wasting money trying to find a decent, usable bass!

These Jaguars sound amazing. I went from long scale to medium scale and it was such a natural transition that I’ve only noticed when I go back to playing my old long scale bass. So, there isn’t much of an adjustment period, if any. Stringing the guitar with a locking nut was also simple. You just pull the strings under it and tighten up. I did wind up replacing the strings within a week of owning it though. I grew accustomed to flat wounds due to their warmth on my previous bass and after putting the new strings on, my tone is about right where I want it for rock, alternative, and blues. I can’t really complain about anything. Even the sunburst looks pretty good. It’s mostly black with a little bit of a gradient orange.

Price was unusually low. Neck was warped and thought it would be best to bring to a shop for repair. It could not be straightened. Unfortunately for me I waited too long and missed the return window.
