I’m a pretty experienced drummer who has played since middle school on acoustic and electric sets of all kinds. On the electric side, I’ve played on Yamaha rubber pad kits on up to top of the line Roland V-Drums. This little Yamaha DD-75 unit is far more portable and compact, so it does fill a niche market. The pads aren’t bad, the sounds/samples/voices are decent, and the price is hard to argue with. Contrary to some reviews here, it DOES come with a power cord (even says so on the box – see pic), but the foot “pedals” are absolutely worthless. It’s pretty difficult to keep a steady beat with them as they are so sporadic and inconsistent in triggering as well as having zero rebound or feedback. That means even for beginners who aren’t trying to do anything fancy will need add-on pedals to make this kit functional. Yamaha recommends their HH40 hi-hat pedal and KU100 kick pedal, but you can probably use just about anything. I picked up a used Yamaha HH65 hit-hat pedal and KP60 kick pad and a pedal for better response (the KU100 pedal is essentially another hi-hat controller as it doesn’t have a beater or any pendulum swing), but I would bet a shiny nickel any brand or model would work. Just know the hi-hat function on the brain is only open/closed with nothing in between, so don’t waste money on a high-end hi-hat pedal.
Overall this unit is a great kit to learn on or if you’re reeeally tight on space but want more than a djembe or cajone or if you’re wanting a cheap multipad/sampler to add to a kit (single output limits level control though). Pads are a bit hard, but not much worse than entry level electric drum sets from Roland, Alesis, or Yamaha. Pad sensitivity is decent, but only a single zone, so the snare won’t have much character. For $200, you can’t complain… But I will, lol. Docked one star because it really isn’t usable without pedals and as an “all-in-one” kit, it should include something with a footplate and decent spring, even if that increases the price by $50-100.

First and foremost, I purchased this because of all the positive reviews I’ve seen on Youtube (demos) from people playing along with music. It sounded really good and my initial impression is the portability and a nice space-saver. On top of that, compared to other tabletop drum kits, the pads on this one are arranged in a way that is almost similar to a full sized electronic / acoustic kit so there’s no awkward hand position when playing.
Having plenty of drum kits to choose from on this one is a big plus, and also the ability to adjust the volume on each individual pad accordingly is awesome (given that other tabletop kits would only allow you to adjust volume on all pads at the same time).
Given it’s a Yamaha, doesn’t mean it wouldn’t fall short on some aspect and this is where the real kicker for me is, thus ended up returning this product.
Primary issue that most people find annoying, and which I also experienced (I didn’t believe this firsthand), are the two supposed to be foot pedals. They are not foot pedals but buttons. Some people find it ok to play with this setup, not in my experience. Compared to my DTX402’s foot pedals, these buttons are a hit or miss. The feel is entirely different and they run around like mouse on a mouse pad (unless you’re on carpet, they will stay in place). Come on Yamaha, what gives? Could’ve made an actual foot pedal for this like other known brands did.
Second issue, the pads are made of hard rubber. The material is more harder than the pads on my DTX402. Your drum sticks won’t have that “bounce” you’d normally expect from a full size electronic drum kit. I am surpised that Yamaha did not decide on using Silicone pads (similar to their earlier electronic drum kits), if they did, this would’ve probably muffled the loud “tap” sound on the pads.
Third issue (and this supplements the 2nd issue), with the “tap” sound on the pads, you will also hear it resonate within the body of this portable drum kit (which to me is quite annoying). If you’re not playing this kit using a headset, you will really hear it and will be forced to increase the volume on this device to your output medium (and I do hope you’re using an output device such as a monitor / edrum speaker, not the built-in speaker if you don’t have a headset). You would also wonder, for the price of this Yamaha DD75 at this time (2023 – almost if not around $300), it shouldn’t feel hollow.
Last issue (inline with the 2nd and 3rd issues), deciding if it’s better to play this with a set of drum sticks or just by hand. Playing with drum sticks, you get the 2nd and 3rd issues I mentioned above. Playing this kit by hand, you will not encounter any issue. If you haven’t noticed, most people who upload their videos playing this drum kit along with their music, have the sound recorded on their computer (or mobile phone), thus producing a clean play. Look for the ones who recorded their videos straight from their camera phone and you will see and hear what I mean.
Price-wise, in my own opinion, this shouldn’t cost close to or around $300. I’d say maxed out at $200 (or lower). I only attest to my own experience of this electronic tabletop drum kit, so if you’re ok with the issues I experienced above, go for it. If not, for the price and with the issues, buy a full sized electronic drum kit instead. As for me, item returned.

So…If you are such a beginner at music/drums that you cannot tell that this machine sounds horrible, than buy it, enjoy it, learn on it, and have a great time, using this as a stepping stone to nicer kit as you progress.
Then, on the other hand, if you are a semi-pro producer/song writer, and need a controller to actuate your beautiful NI Abby Road drums or slate drums etc, and do not want to shell out $1000 for a nice Roland kit, then THIS is perfect.
Using the MIDI output, I can tweak this machine, plus settings in Kontakt, to get the play-ability of my favorite drum sets perfect, and fun. It can do buzzes and rolls as well! but again, if you want flawless playing, you’ll need to get actual nice roland mesh heads, etc.
but for me, I needed the cheapest solution to simply trigger my VST drums. And this is it. It is “good enough” and that’ all I wanted, no more, no less.
I used to play on my keyboard, but this is SO MUCH better, and I only spent minimal dollars. Plus, I need to experiment with electric drums in a new performance venue I’m in charge of, and again, I didn’t wanna shell out tons of cash to experiment…but this is a perfect cheap way to explore what electric drums might mean for us in different venues.

Sounds from the in-built speakers are not great but once it is plugged to big speakers and woofer, it sounds very realistic to actual drums. It is very solid, strong and great for learning and playing live music. I enjoy it a lot. My 3 yr kid too enjoys it playing and practicing.
