My brother requested I help him find a good inexpensive camcorder, after seeing his; my wife wanted one also. I have ordered
2 of these.
This model doesn’t have a touch screen, the owners manual covers all models, my brother found it confusing to operate.
It really should have its own user manual.
Once you get past that learning curve; It takes very good sill pictures and movies.
Be sure you download the FULL VERSION of play memories, the camera has a starter version preloaded.
Also order a HDMI to HDMI mini cable or you have to hook up the A/V cables to your tv set. A much longer process.
The camera takes movies in HD which look great; However if you want to burn to a DVD, you have to use
a blueray disc or convert the file to standard Def. The play-memories software will convert it for you,but it is
a lengthy process. If you want to make standard DVDs or post on line; you are better off to shoot it in standard
def to begin with.
You can hook the camera up to your computer with the USB cable(included). I found it much faster and
more convenient to just plug the SD card into my computer. The play memories software works well either way.
As a added bonus; the play memories software will scan all picture files and movies on your computer(similar to picassa)
It will let you edit movies and enhance all you pictures, not just the ones you take with the Sony HDR-CX190.
It also makes it extremely easy to email files or post online.

This has been a great HD camcorder so far. It is very small and lightweight, to say the least. I think the 70 series battery I bought for this unit weighs almost as much as the camera. The controls are good with the little screen joystick and menus. The color is very good on the screen, and the video is sharp. I like the 30x for videoing my stepsons’ wrestling matches. I can sit on the top row of the bleachers at the matches and still get all the action on video, no problem. I like the playback, too. I just hook the cable to the big TV and press play on the camera, and it goes thru each video one at a time. I haven’t moved the video files over from the camera to my computer yet. I will report back on that. I’m thinking on the highest HD setting, the camera uses about 10GB per hour, so I may appropriate an external drive for just for my HD videos. The 70 series battery I bought is supposed to be good for about 3 hours of continuous video, so I thot that would be a good match-up with my 32GB HCSD card. I bought a 32GB Class 10 card from Amazon, and it seems to be working pretty well so far. I sat down at the wrestling match a couple weeks ago, and 3 people within the vicinity were all using Sony cameras similar to mine. One person had the new Sony with the built-in projector, and I have to say the picture he projected on the wall of gymnasium really looked good. I think that option is $100 more than the $300 I paid for this camera, so if you are interested, I think it’s worth checking out. I don’t think my camera can do it, but wouldn’t it be cool if a person could jack HD video and/or video games, dvd players, etc, into the camera and then project it onto a wall, screen, or sheet? I’m going to check that out to see if there is a video-IN option on the Sony Projector video cameras. I also think $300 is a good price for this type of camera. I was torn between this camera and the Canon camera of similar price. I have owned both Sony and Canon cameras in the past, and I think they are both really good. I ended up buying the Sony because of the price of aftermarket accessories and the Prime shipping because the race between the Sony and Canon brands was so close. I truly feel that anyone who buys this camera for a simple point and shoot HD camcorder without a lot of frills will not be disappointed.

My basis of comparison is a Panasonic miniDV camcorder that’s over decade old, so maybe it’s no surprise I’m really pleased with the Sony. Still:
The good:
1. Amazingly lightweight.
2. Compact enough to fit in the belt case for my old still camera (a Canon SureShot, if you’re curious).
3. No need to carry the charger around; it can charge (though more slowly) from my computer via the built-in USB cable.
4. Lots of settings available, but the defaults work fine.
5. Focuses well while zooming (my old camcorder, and near-new Fuji FinePix still camera, do not).
6. Pretty good (though not fabulous) in low light, esp. with the “Low lux” setting.
The not as good:
1. The options are not explained very well in the manual, so it takes some experimenting to find out what they do and whether they help. For example, “Zoom mic” seems intended to get better sound when you zoom in, but really just makes recordings tinny and noisy.
2. When I first posted this review, right after I bought it, I said the still photos were impressive. Having used it more over the last half year, I say the photos are sometimes quite good but sometimes really look like video stills. I haven’t figured out what makes some turn out better except that the best are indoors.
3. Since I like good sound, I wish there were an input for an external mic.
