AZ Mutley –
I’ve had this unit a day or so, and watched 3 movies. So it’s not a comprehensive review by any means but here’s what I found.
a) the picture is almost as good as the Toshiba HDA20 I have, but it seems the HD DVD has the edge on action scenes. The Blu Ray seems to have some artifacts, noticed this the most on “Layer Cake”
I did try to switch to the 24 fps mode, but the player refused to do so, even though I have a 1080p Scepter TV. This might be the TV as it was their first 1080p set.
b) the complaint about the missing ether net port holds no basis, in the manual they describe needing to download and burn a CD with the updates. Since you’d need internet either way and a CD costs a few cents.. not a problem.
c) compared to the horror stories I’ve heard about the first couple of generations of sony machines this baby boots up almost right away, faster than the HDA20. It does seem to sit and think between menu selections, which the HD discs don’t do.. but it’s not really a problem.
Price is high compared to other machines, but this one works fine.
Right now it’s 4 stars as I don’t know if the 24fps is going to work and it’s a bit pricey, other wise I’d say 5
************************** some time later *****************************
The 24fps works like a dream with the samsung tv. It’s certainly the way to view Blu Ray that has this option. Once set up the TV automatically adjusts when 24fps is detected. Thus far I have never had a disc that refused to play, not needed s firm ware update in 8 months. 5 stars.

I’ve been a die-hard Sony supporter, but after blindly buying the Sony BDP-S300, watching it take several minutes to boot up, and load a movie, lock-up several times, which requires that you shut it down, and go thru the painful process of re-booting, I decided it was time to check out the competition.
I did some research, got on the A/V forums, and the Panasonic DMP-BD10AK came out on top. It is by far the best player for the money. Boot-up, and loading a movie takes less than a minute, and so far it has yet to lock-up. The controls are not at sleek and smooth as the Sony, but they work nicely without a hitch.
Another perk at the time was the 5 free discs that come in the box, plus the 5 free by mail. One of the free discs in the box is Pirates of the Carribean, #2. I never had the opportunity to play this on the Sony, but I read that quite a few people had problems even getting this one to play on the it. The Panasonic plays it smoothly.
Anothe nice perk is being able to up-date the firmware. That is a definite must in my book. The process is relatively simple, and painless.
All in all, if anyone is looking for a somewhat affordable High Def player this is the one I recommend without reservation. I am very pleased with it’s performance.
Incline Village Business Owner –
We decided not to wait for the HD wars to settle and jumped for BluRay. I figure that I can buy a player for each format for less than a combo player.
This Panasonic player seemed to be in the top-three for performance at a ressonable price. It is a new design. Since we were going with a Panasonic display (58″ Plasma), I opted for the Panasonic player. This was a good decision. Panasonic has integrated the control between the DVD and the monitor to provide one-button simplicity. Press play, the TV powers up, the proper HDMI is selected, the movie starts. Simple.
More important than simplicity is the picture. We had just updated from a Samsung 42″ LCD on Dish Satellite with an upconverting DVD player. We thought that was good. When we converted to Plasma and DirecTV, we got a much better picture along with many more HDTV channels. The picture went to beautiful.
I didn’t think I could see an improvement over DirecTv. But with this player, the system is simply awesome. The picture is vivid and fast. The sound, processed by an Onkyo 805 7.1 Receiver is far better than sound from DirecTV.
The player came with about $150 worth of action videos. (Pirates, Fanatic 4, etc.) That was enought to get me to buy a few more. Mainly we use NetFlix, but I want to have some owned content to showoff the system.
Don’t wait on high def DVDs – jump it – the technology is great.

Dear Fellow Amazonians –
So I just received my brand new Panasonic DMP-BD30 and was excited to try it out on my brand new Samsung LCD. I put in the brand new Transformers Blu-ray and what happened — NOTHING. It started to load and then stopped abruptly. I tried some other Blu-rays which played fne.
I researched the issue on the Internet and it turns out that quite a few other people have experienced this problem as well. The on-screen error says “Cannot Read” and pretty much every Internet post has said this means the drive has failed — get a new player.
I tried to update the firmware following Panasonic’s instructions to a “T” with a burnt CD-R disk and again I got the same “Cannot Read” on-screen error.
So beware — this player may or may not work for you, but it seems like on the whole most of them do.
Pros:
– Good value compared to competition
– Intuitive Menu
– Blu-rays look great at 1080p (when they work)
Cons:
– Slow loading; I don’t have a baseline to compare this model against, but for a modern day electronic device it seems to turn on, load discs, and play movies extremely slow
– Possible defective unit at purchase or after continued use
Hope yours works better than mine!
Thank you Amazon for having such a great return and replacement policy!
*I will update when I get my replacement player from Amazon to let everyone know if it performs any better. Until then!
