Usually I ride the wave of technology. I buy most devices within a short time from when they come out. I didn’t do this with Blu-ray. I waited a long time before buying a Blu-ray player. In fact, I waited so long that by the time I bought this unit, Blu-ray could be effectively declared dead. Now after that long pre-amble, I will say that this is a pretty decent player. It does everything you would want for a DVD/Blu-Ray player. Unfortunately, I just don’t use it. It since with my other A/V equipment and is never used.

I recently bought BD-E5900 Blu Ray player which replaced a old Sony counterpart. Comparatively (to Sony’s blu ray player) Samsung’s is a sleek and light weight player and does not take much of space.
The user interface is intuitive and colorful! The set up is painless and easy – Use a HDMI cable (HDMI cable is not supplied with the unit) to connect to the TV or a AV receiver. As soon as I started the player and connected to WiFi (also you may need to use a Coaxial Digital cable and an Optical cable depending on your TV/AV Receiver models), it started downloading the latest firmware automatically and also it auto-installed few of the applications like Pandora, YouTube, Hulu Plus, Vudu, Sudoku etc., If you need more apps, Samsung app store is the place. It has got good collection of apps and enough to enjoy the experience of a smart TV.
For accessing Vudu through this player, Vudu gives a free initial credit of $5.99 and Blockbuster of $5.00.
AllShare (DLNA) is another amazing feature which seamlessly connects to either other devices connected in your home network or an external hard drive/flash drive connected through USB. If you own a Samsung smart phone (Galaxy SIII/Note etc.,) you may use other features (apart from accessing through AllShare) like WiFi Direct and share data between devices. The android YouTube app can be paired with YouTube app on the player which allows viewing your favorite channels/videos on TV by selecting the videos from your smart phone (With this you may avoid the pain of typing/searching using the on screen keyboard). The picture clarity is amazing of videos accessed through Youtube/Vimeo (I am comparing this with my old Sony player).
I was very excited to use the browser as it was advertised to be a ‘Full’ browser but it had upset me – It does not play most (almost all) of the flash content and very painful while using the pointer or scrolling option. The on screen qwerty mode keyboard is also so user friendly. The biggest drawback is not providing a smart mobile remote app for android/iOS mobile phones/tablets. At times the system frustrates you and tests your patience in loading apps.
Overall it’s a decent choice for the price and the product lives up to the expectation and I hope Samsung provides some more firmware updates to get over the minor software glitches and enhancing the speed of loading apps. It would be nice to see a smart phone compatible remote app too.
P.S: I would update my review after using the player for couple of months to see where it stands from now 🙂

This player is technically used but it sure didn’t look like it to me. Setup was really easy. 3D movies are phenomenal.

What is the point of having a 3D TV if the only way to watch 3D is to BUY the movie (can’t rent them either). Not a fan of buying a bunch of dvd’s. We had a Panasonic 3D blu-ray player that came with the Panasonic 3D TV, but found that none of the movie streaming apps on the device would stream 3D! Unless your cable/satellite provider has it so you can use “their” VOD from their box, you are left to buy the movie.
Apparently VUDU is the only “app” that is really streaming in 3D right now, but Panasonic after more than a year has never rolled out the update to allow VUDU to stream 3D on its device, even tho VUDU has been capable of it the whole time.
I found all this out when I called VUDU to ask why I couldn’t find any 3D movies in their “3D movie” lists. So I asked them what devices did have it and they gave me a list of devices that had gotten the necessary updates, and the newer devices that are shipping already capable. I found this one on Amazon much cheaper than retail and I LOVE IT!
The “smart” aspect is totally awesome! This player can not only stream 3D from VUDU, but has built in wifi (no adapters needed!) which is more than capable of handling a streaming 3D movie. The other apps are plentiful and varied. The only one it doesn’t have is..wait for it… Amazon VOD…go figure. But my TV does that so I am ok there (got rid of Netflix when I found out about Amazon’s streaming and it’s cheaper, too.
The only thing that does irk me about the player is that for all it does and all the video stuff you could ever find on the internet is this: IT DOES NOT HAVE A KEYBOARD REMOTE! using the remote to search is a PAIN. There is an app that Samsung put on the market that is a wireless like remote, but it too does not have a KEYBOARD..
BTW…some of the other apps that will come on it are HBOGO (you must have it with your cable co) and PlayOn..
With PlayOn (subscription) you have access to lots of cool channels like regular Hulu (not +), ESPN3 and more.

Refurbished product came in different external carton. All important literature and remote was included. Player was in like new condition. Fairly easy set-up. Shipment also came with reminder to update the firmware upon initial set-up. Set-up to my private wireless router (linksys) was easy since I knew my password. Its DNLA found my pc network as long as my pc was awake. Its a little slow as most entertainment wifi’s are but the connectivity is solid during my experience to date. The letter/number input is very painful but I am using bookmarks in the few areas I want to access blog websites. Apps are decent with netflix , pandora standard. Crackle app is available for my seinfeld episodes, all worked well. there’s an ifood app and a national weather app that has regional radar on it, much better than dumb accuweather app. There is also the Naked Trailer movie trailer app. Of course the disc player for blu-ray and dvd is excellent picture wise. For the $52 delivered price it is a steal.
