Tested the player out last night, it worked well, I spent the morning running cat 5 to the back of my entertainment center. As expected, when everything was connected I got a message to update my firmware, I took a previous reviewers advice and updated it via USB flash downloaded on my laptop (while I was testing my lan line), I now have version 2.03 dated 9/17. The firmware install was easy and worked, no locking up that previous reviewers have experienced (I did experience a lockup for other reasons below). I plan on updating my firmware via the LAN connection for the next update.
As far as functionality, I found a few flaws with the player that I assume can be fixed with the next firmware update. The first is that the unit locked up after extended periods on pause. We paused the movie a few times and as soon as the screen saver came on the unit would lock up, requiring me to turn it off and then back on. After doing this twice the next time I hit the stop button thinking I could use the “resume play” function; however, when I hit the “play” button it started back at the beginning vice where I stopped watching. I’m assuming operator error for the second one and will research the manual tonight to see if this is true. Most players I’ve had in the past have a “resume play” feature, so I figure this is a firmware issue. I would have rated it a 5 had it not been for these two issues.
I played both youtube and pandora, and both worked flawlessly. I don’t have a netflix account, so I haven’t tried that. I did bring up blockbuster but the only thing that appeared was the “coming soon” window with no titles listed. The movie quality played off of a blue ray DVD was superb, I did have to fiddle with the audio output setting such that my A/V receiver would get the Dolby Digital DTS Master HD signal (set the player to output bitstream (audiofile) and it worked fine after this). I have a 50″ panasonic plasma that’s about 2 years old and a Pioneer Elite A/V tuner. Connectivity: LAN, HDMI to A/V receiver, also 2 GB sandisk flash drive for BD-live, which I couldn’t get to work…again probably operator error.
Overall, good player for the price, I will update this after some runtime.
UPDATE 10/13/2009 – I’ve successfully updated to the latest version as of last week. I was prompted to install and did so via my ethernet connection, no problems. Another reader let me know it was out there and asked whether or not it corrected the “resume play” function and pause issues I experienced above, well it did partially. Over the weekend I let the player pause until the screen saver came on and was able to play from the spot where I left off without a problem, however the resume play feature did not work once I stopped the Blue Ray disc in it’s entirety. The Resume play function does work with regular DVDs. I played “The incredibles” with the kids last night and this player does a great job upconverting regular DVDs, the picture was excellent.

I got this player as a promotional deal from Amazon. At the time I purchased it, I was not intending to buy a Blue Ray player and knew very little about BD players except that they have better pictures and cost a lot of money. But when Amazon offered to give me this BD player (free) and ship it (free) just for buying the LCD TV I was planning to buy… I figured only a fool would pass up such a deal. So I bought it. That’s a bit odd to say since I didn’t have to pay anything for the unit or for shipment.
Then I saw all the negative reviews and I got a knot in the pit of my stomach. At the time, almost 50% of the reviews were bad. Most of the reviews were because people had bricked their player while upgrading the firmware. There were other minor issues, but the most common was the bricking. So I was apprehensive about getting this unit, even if it was free.
Then it came… I decided that I would make things fast and reduce the amount of pain (like ripping off a band-aide) and brick the unit right away… just out of the box. So I hooked it up to my TV and internet and told it to do a firmware update.
I didn’t realize updating the firmware would take as long as it did…. 28 minutes and 34 seconds… and I have pretty fast internet (5Mb DSL). It took so long that I fell asleep watching the progress bar, and woke up from a dream… not knowing where I was… and the update hadn’t finished yet.
Then the fun began… in the other reviews, they indicated that once the firmware had been updated, the machine wouldn’t turn on. After the firmware completed… I was expecting it would be a brick.
But… I pressed the power button on the remote, and it sprung to life. Hmmm…. What the hell…
I’ve since updated the firmware twice. Each time, I’ve expected it to be my last. Each time, I’m pleasantly surprised to find the thing still works. I don’t know if I’ve gotten the magical unit, or if I’m just doing it right. I did read in the manual that you shouldn’t update the firmware when a disk is in the tray… which is how most people are bricking their players.
Okay… now for the real review:
Setup is easy with an HDMI cable. The only thing I don’t like about HDMI is that you still have to have a cable running to your sound system if you want surround sound — TV’s will only give stereo output on their digital sound connection for inputs comming from HDMI (It’s some stupid Hollywood restriction). It sort of defeats the purpose of HDMI. Alternatively, you can connect the HDMI to an HDMI switching receiver. But, in my case, I was connecting a Samsung BD player to a Samsung LCD — with ANYNET+. It’s not clear the receiver would allow me to control the BD player from the TV remote if I had it connected that way. I don’t have a HDMI switching receiver anyway… so I’d have to buy one… and I have 4 HDMI components (XBox, MediaPlayer, HD-Tivo, BD Player) and most of the receivers have only 2 or 3 HDMI inputs. So… I’d have to get an external HDMI switch also. It’s too bad there isn’t a box that will just switch HDMI and separate the Video from the Audio. But… I digress….
The picture…. is awesome! I compared a couple of DVD’s played on my $300 DVD player with the same DVD played on my FREE!!! BD Player. I thought digital-was-digital. But the picture from the BD player looked better than the DVD player. I don’t know why. I don’t care.
ANYNET+ I’ve read/heard people complain about this… I don’t know what’s to complain about. For me, it was intuitve. It would be nice if there was a “BD” button on the remote, and that was all you had to do to select the BD Player, there isn’t such a button… But, selecting the BD player from the “Source” list is certainly easier than what I’m used to. And selecting the BD player from the “Source” list turns on the BD Player. So, I don’t even have to use the BD remote for anything. However… the BD remote and the TV remote are almost exactly the same.
The YouTube gadget… is about 95%. I’ve been looking for something that will blend YouTube with my HD-TV. This comes about 95% of the way. The YouTube gadget on the BD player is significantly better than the YouTube widget that comes with the TV. Even the low resolution YouTube videos look better on the BD player’s gadget… and certainly better than on my 24″ monitor.
There are three points I have issues with the YouTube gadget. 1) Although you’re able to tie your YouTube account to the YouTube viewer, you’re not able to get a list of the new videos from you Subscription list. To view those videos, you either have to setup search patterns on the BD player, or you have to use your computer to mark those new videos as “Favorites.” It would seem like a simple addition to add a Subscriptions list to the BD player. 2) There doesn’t appear to be anyway to navigate inside a video. Several of the video’s I watch are interactive — they have things to click on. The BD player’s YouTube gadget is only able to view. 3) There are several YouTube like video sites that play video in the same formats as YouTube. It would be nice if the BD player allowed you to select the site you’re getting your video feeds from. But… I’m sure that’s easier said than done.
Pandora, NetFlix, BlockBuster: I subscribe to Pandora and am in love with the internet radio concept. But it’s a little odd to be listening to internet radio on a 55″ LCD and not have some sort of visualizer attached to it. I canceled my NetFlix subscription a couple of years ago after getting 8 straight unplayable DVD’s. I wasn’t impressed with their video streaming either. Playing to my home computer over 5Mb DSL I’d get a lot of pauses and pixelization frames. And there were several movies where I got almost to the end, and it just froze… and I had to start over. So I’m not sure how much of the NetFlix and BlockBuster gadgets I’ll use. But… watching the trailers from BlockBuster is incredible! I watched the “Land of the Lost” trailer… The image detail and sound are amazing.
USB content: The LCD TV has a USB port also. As odd as it seems, the TV is able to play almost every file format I’ve been able to throw on a USB stick. The BD player on the other hand doesn’t seem to play anything. I put a home DVD on the USB stick in both VOB and ISO formats. The BD player didn’t understand either of them. I tried playing video’s I’d downloaded to the USB stick from YouTube… they didn’t play. I don’t remember the other formats I tried… but it’s a good thing I have USB on the TV also… and a MediaPlayer with a USB port. It sort of makes me wonder what the USB ports are good for (except firmware updates).
At the end of the day… I would certainly be willing to pay the $199 ($189 on sale) price for this unit as it outperforms my expectations in that price range. So far… I haven’t had any trouble with freeze-ups or unplayable media (that wasn’t unplayable in other units).
