The Lenovo Legion 5 is a really good gaming+working laptop, with serious hardware inside, and clean chassis that look more professional than a typical gaming laptop. Although you could get it with RGB keyboard if you want more flashiness.
The cooling solution on the Legion 5 is probably the best in the 2020 mid-class gaming laptops – its fans are hardly noticeable. I mean it. Even while gaming the fans aren’t blasting jet-like, unlike other mid-class laptops.
Running benchmarks – I have not noted the CPU or GPU throttle at all when plugged in. This contributes to a good user experience in the sense of quietness, temperature to the touch, and maintaining consistent performance.
From a gaming standpoint alone: the 1660ti and 4800h deliver expected mid to high framrates, although no extremely high framrates or ray tracing. For the price this is perfectly fine. Lenovo Vantage software allows for easy 2 click overclock of the GPU, if you want to extract every last ounce of juice.
From a working standpoint alone: there are very few laptops with better processors than the 4800H in the first place (in 2020), let alone that compete in price with this. This CPU crunches numbers and compiles code as fast as some modern desktop chips, with it’s 8 cores and 16 threads.
From a mobility standpoint: the batteries of gaming laptops as a whole, are their weak point. Gaming laptops are firstly designed with performance in mind, secondly designed with portability and battery efficiency. This is not an ultrabook. You preferably want this to be plugged in wherever you sit, because that’s how the laptop can unlock all of its power. Get a good case or bag to carry it around because it is not small and has a big power brick charger alongside it. Also to protect it effectively, because it seems like it’ll last a long time with those internal components.
Screen: the panel is quite nice and covers 100% of sRGB, with only a tiny bit of yellowish tint. The high refresh rate is great at 144Hz and the response time is low – and can be lowered further with Lenovo Vantage screen Overdrive setting.
Speakers are very usable. Clear and loud.
Not as loud as a macbook pro, but very usable.
Keyboard keys are a little bit too short-traveling in my opinion, I’d like a larger travel-distance of the keys. The keyboard has full size arrows and full (small) numpad which is a plus for work. And white illumination with 2 steps (or off).
Camera is average~standard…Enough for Zoom video meetings…
Hopefully this review was helpful, click yes if it was! 🙂

The performance is totally there. The 4800H runs exactly as expected, fast. Stupid fast. The GPU is a 1660Ti with what looks to be an 80W power plan, judging by in game power limits I was seeing. Though Lenovo included some very basic overclocking tools with the machine. The combo results in decent performance in every game I have tried at 1080P (native resolution) so far.
The GPU sits at a comfortable 70ish degrees (Celsius) while playing COD MW, or even during Furmark stress testing. The CPU gets a bit warm (to be expected) hitting the 90’s at peak while gaming. But the system stays comfortable even during an extended gaming session.
The display is decent. Great color, no obvious in game smearing, video looks sharp. Sound is mediocre on the integrated speakers. To be expected in a laptop really.
Keyboard is another great keyboard from Lenovo. Responsive, good travel, sharp feedback, and decent layout. It would have been nice to have a larger number pad – but that would have meant a larger machine overall, so the choice they made makes sense. I don’t care for the white backlighting, but it will do the job.
The included Samsung NVME SSD was a nice touch. It has plenty of space out of the factory to install a couple games, remembering that COD:MW will consume half of it on its own. Which brings us to the first real negative. The extra M.2 slot included is a short slot. 2242, rather than the common 2280. I only found one brand of semi-reputable drives for 2242 (which I didn’t feel comfortable buying), and I don’t really want to remove the included 2280 just to add some space. Ended up going with a SATA based drive for now – as I could get 1TB for less than 100 bucks, and it was a brand I know I can at least get support from. The included drive tested out to 3580MB/sec read speeds, 1143 4k read (QD32). Write speeds of 2989 and 2123 4k(QD32), which isn’t bad at all.
The memory included on here states it is Kingston SK Hynix 3200Mhz RAM. It is running 22-22-22 timings. I found no options in the BIOS to make any adjustments to that either. I don’t think you are going to get the RAM to run much, if any faster. Though 16GB is a bit short for gaming these days.
The chassis is entirely plastic. It doesn’t feel bad, but doesn’t feel great either. It fits with the budget. Port placement is dead on though. One normal USB on each side for things you may insert/remove often (like USB flash drives) and 2 more on the rear for things you would leave in place, like a mouse dongle. Also has power, USB-C and monitor ports on the rear as well, nice and out of the way for lefties or righties.
TL;DR / Summary
You get what you pay for. It is a nice machine for the price paid. The performance isn’t hampered by poor cooling, or poor choices in parts. It boots quick, games quick, and generally functions perfectly well. You give up premium build, and aesthetics to hit this price though. Not that it looks bad, as it doesn’t. But no one is going to mistake it for a Surface, or a Razer Blade.

Bought for school work and light gaming (League of Legends and similar). Really happy overall – very fast performance, really good build quality. Boots up fast, very responsive, good feel of the keyboard. The screen is especially nice – crisp, clear, great color, brightness. Its being used with a laptop cooler, so no issues with heat as far as we can tell.
Did all the OS and driver updates (installed the Nvidia software for graphics management) and everything is working perfectly.
Haven’t tried it with more demanding games, so can’t comment on its performance for that. But for everything we’ve used it for, its an exceptional product.
A few notes. The backlit keyboard is white only (no RGB support). Also, you have to go into the BIOS to disable power on the USB ports when the unit is shut down (we did this so that the cooling pad doesn’t keep running after shutting down the laptop).
For the price of this unit, I would say it offers great value for money and I’d highly recommend it.
