I have an older Dell Latitude 600M that I keep to run older radio software. The drive started to fail. I was able to image with Macrum Reflect, re image to the new HDD and boot right into Windows XP like nothing ever happened.

This is a steal for less than $30 and same day delivery. Back up and running right away!

Drive appears to be a pull and not brand new, but that wasn’t a surprise. Wanted to see if an old laptop actually worked after going through a pile of bricked IDE laptop drives. This drive worked perfectly – was able to install Linux Mint and get it running again. But remember it’s an old IDE laptop drive. Expect 20-years-ago performance.

I’ve had an Epson P-2000 40G for years and wanted to keep it as a field backup for CF cards. Mirrored the P-2000 drive, and it took a little finagling but replaced the original in about 30 minutes. Works great!

I’m fine with WD; it’s a good brand and 80 GB. But they should update their listing.

I purchased this drive for use in my 2011 BMW Car Information Computer (CIC), which is central to the iDrive and nav system. The factory drive in the nav system is a 4200 RPM Toshiba drive, and it is notably slow. The drive typically starts developing enough errors to be problematic between the 70,000-100,000 mile mark, and BMW charges a mint to replace it. In fact – they typically just replace the whole computer.

This Hitachi drive is faster (5400 RPM) and most importantly extremely cheap compared to the alternative. It’s so cheap in fact, that I have bought more than one to keep in reserve. Since the operating system is QNX, you need a program to do a bit or block-level copy of the drive – and there’s a number of good programs for doing this. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a way to utilize a larger drive in the CIC, as the system does not seem recognize larger partitions without it causing problems down the line (a lot of research). While people have had some luck with using a SSD in this application, many have come back at a later date and stated they ran into problems with the drive, and switched back to a mechanical drive. Additionally – the added cost of a PATA/IDE SSD is simply not worth the slight performance improvement in the CIC.

I would have downgraded the drive to 4 stars due to the fact it’s not faster… but you have to take the low price into account – which is why I rated it at 5 stars. Granted – the cost per GB is not necessarily cheap, but you have to realize that it’s hard to find a PATA/IDE drive, and the cost for this drive is actually not very far out of reason when you realize the rarity of PATA/IDE laptop drives.

    Overall – and excellent buy.
