I’m using this Pioneer Blu-ray drive with Windows 11, and it works great. It is very quiet while playing my movies. Playback is silky smooth. Blu-ray movies look amazing, as expected, but it’s DVDs that are surprising. They look amazingly clear on my 4K TV. I highly recommend this Pioneer Blu-ray drive.

Easy installation and set up. Was not able to read old CD-R I had in my library of backup files. Could read old DVD or professional CD’s.

Fantastic piece of hardware, demonstrably faster at reading files to backup a large media library. Handles Blu-Ray & DVD swimmingly, the only “potential” issue you might run into would be the drive itself being somewhat loud during operation, but I can’t see how that’s a surprise given how big and bulky this thing is. Indeed, portability is not a strong suit of this drive, but I’d say what you sacrifice there is more than made up for in terms of R/W speed. This thing absolutely blasts through CDs, I’ve had it rip all the files off a 16-track album within the 5-6 minute mark. Great option if you’re looking for something faster than those ‘portable’ drives from LG that fail around the 6-month mark.

Picked this up specifically because it was listed as a common use with 4k. But doesn’t work as advertised. Was otherwise quick and solidly built.

Puchased this drive as a replacement for an older DVD reader/writer drive that was having issue with reading disks. Was concerned the format of data written to DVD disks was now using a coding format that older drive was having issue with. This drive is working very well.

    Dear Customer Support,
yesterday my external Pioneer Bluray-Drive arrived from Amazon. The model description is: BDR-X13EBK (manufactured August 2023, Ser. No: CHDL000563WL).
Although I have tried for hours, it has proved impossible yet, to get it running in connection with my Apple, MacBook Pro (manufactured 2021, OS Sonoma 14.4.1). I also tried tried this in connection to my iMac (model 2015) but was just as unsuccessful. (The MacBook Pro is supposed to be my gadget of choice, though).
I want to draw your attention to some observations which account for my disappointment and dissatisfaction:
    – The manual virtually hides information on the installation routine, with its significant differences between running the device with a Mac and a Windows computer. So, for example you invite the customer on p. 7 of your manual to download and install the Cyber Link Media Suite, only to inform him on p. 20 that this program does not run at all on Macs.

    – You stress the advisability of a direct cable connection between Bluray-drive and computer. Still you provide only a cable with a traditional Type B USB plug, to connect to the rare Type A socket on your device. Since you should know very well, that the traditional Type B USB sockets have long been replaced for Type C USB/Thunderbolt sockets your packaging decision looks negligent to me. It should look much more circumspect to most continental customers if you provided such a cable instead of an English power plug.

    – When it comes to installing drivers (or perhaps new firmware (?)), I found no clear advice which ones to choose and in which sequence they should be installed. Thus it would be helpful and reasssuring to be told in advance, whether the old driver (Version: Pioneer Drive Utility_v117.dmg) must be installed before downloading and activating the Pioneer DriveUpdaterBDR, Version: V104EU.dmg) – and apart from all this: Which role would the Drive Utility Lite for Mac (Version: V1_01_002.dmg) play in the installation game?
    – What I could install so far would only show the written part of the disc-icon on my desktop, but not the image that should be displayed on top of the textline. The window of the PioneerDriveUtility (Version 1.17) remains empty, which seems to indicate, that the device is not recognized by the program. (see attached screenshot).
The program ist not communicative. There is only mystery in the heap of ambiguities shown to the user: “Disc may be mounted. Please restart this tool after eject the disc!”
Please help me! It would be sad to be left with the impression that an inherently good product is killed because of poor and careless customer support.
    – What I also miss is a checklist for the system-settings, as they should be on my Mac in order to ensure unproblematic operation.

Angesichts dieser Anfangsprobleme blieb die Frage nach regionalcodierungs-unabhänger Nutzbarkeit des Geräts noch ungestellt. In der Produktbeschreibung habe ich jedoch keine Informationen dazu finden können.

After a brilliant long-serving unbranded Blu-Ray drive finally ran out of steam in summer ’23, I purchased the widely promoted Bunud drive to replace it. I was looking for a drive that would help me back up the remainder of my Blu-Ray collection, and particularly my 3D collection. After initially impressing, I found there were some 3D discs that this drive couldn’t process, no matter how many attempts, reinstalls of software, etc etc. Very few forums offered clarity for the lay person. I was also getting increasingly concerned at some of the mechanical noises made by that drive. I decided that a further hardware upgrade was worth trying. Enter this Pioneer drive…

WOW! What an absolute beast! Delivered within 24hrs, the drive is considerably bigger than most of the immediate competition, and not much smaller than the Mac Mini it’s now connected to. It’s bulkier, but the build quality is evident. Unlike a lot of the cheaper external optical drives, this is NOT reliant on your USB port (or dual ports) for power. It has a separate power cable, and comes with two power cables for UK and EU sockets. The single USB 3.0 cable should plug directly into your computer for best results (rather than via a hub). The drive was instantly recognised by Mac OS Sonoma, and the drive tray is robust and responsive to operating system commands and push-button activation.

My first test was on my most troublesome 3D disc. Where the other drive had failed repeatedly around the 20% mark, the Pioneer completed the back-up job in one go. Running almost silently the entire time too. There is almost no heat or air emitted from the drive – and virtually no vibration, even on a hard surface. The final output was spot on, and now I can approach my remaining back-up tasks with much more confidence.

Note: This drive has noticeably upgraded specs compared to cheaper alternatives, but you will be constrained by your computer’s processing power and software limitations. The drive itself is capable of the specs described, but your kit may not be able to utilise it to that degree. I have not tested the burning capability (as I have no use for this functionality), and I also have no use for the PowerRead or PureRead3 software as I typically use DVDFab and MakeMKV.

In summary, I’m delighted with this drive, and it’s proven again the lesson of ‘buy cheap, buy twice’. This Pioneer looks and feels like a proper bit of kit. Excellent value, and highly recommended.

Used it to rip 7 Blu ray disc then it stopped working. Disc couldn’t be read, then wouldn’t even spin, then had to use the pin hole to eject the disc. Complete waste of my time and money
