I bought this drive to use as backup for my desktop computer, and I find it amazing that something so small has such large storage capacity! It’s almost too cute to be a hard drive.

The software installs easily, and it took me a while to get the hang of the software, but otherwise is wonderful. I love how it automatically backs up all the data on my computer (instead of me having to specify which files to backup). It also will make a new backup anytime I save a file, which is nice. Gives me peace of mind, you know?

I love my cute little hard drive – it’s definitely worth the money!

The WD 500 GB USB Passport drive is exactly what I was looking for. I needed a drive that was self powered, USB, big size, and could work with the Wii. Well this puppy fits all that and I didn’t realize how small it would be. I am shocked there are so many one star reviews on this guy.

For those of you considering this drive, here are some more comments to help you consider your choice.

Price – I ended up going for the 500GB drive around Christmas because the 320 was only two bucks cheaper at the time

Speed – It is USB but I am able to easily read 30MB+ from it and write 15-20MB most of the time.

Self Powered – Works fine on my HP laptop and plugs and chugs perfect on my Wii 4.2U (NTFS)

Connector – Unless WD magically changed this drive recently and all these 1 star ratings are for some older model, I see no problem with the connector. In the event mine is different the numbers on the back are 1811B R/N: C1B LAEGKA and looks to have been made in Thailand. P/N is WDBAAA5000ABK-00.

Virtual CD Software – Boy are there some complainers out there. Have you not heard of a search engine? I mean you are smart enough to buy from Amazon, you can’t find the HP USB Disk Formatting tool to reformat your drive and wipe out the bloatware?

Size – After NTFS total reformat and wiping out bloatware Windows tells me the drive is 465GB (500,079,493,120 bytes).

I was one of the first that almost pre-ordered it and was anxious to get it instead of the old version due to the new stuff WD was promoting on the video. As I was out on a trip I did not manage to open and use it when it arrived at home and the negative reviews and rating caught me by surprise on my way to use it for the first time. Before even plugging it in my PC i wished i hadn’t order it so early and blamed myself for running to get the newest model. Indeed if you install the smartware software your PC will slow down and the flexibility you are given is just for newbies although i really do not see value on it.
if you want to use it as a a backup drive that will show up in “My Computer” you just need to ignore the installation steps and press cancel to everything. the drive will appear in “my computer” and you can use it as a normal drive with no problem at all. i just read that you can even disable the virtual drive etc but i really do not care as by not installing the software i see no slowdown at all and can use it. i admit that i am not happy that the smartware promotion fooled me and really is of no use to me but still i have a very nice drive for my backup. if sth really bothers me is the sensitivity of the connection cable and i really wish WD does sth for it as they should show some respect to their clients. my experience with external drives was mainly with Seagate and i never had any issue. i still believe Passport is a good drive but i expected more.

I have been using the 640GB version of the drive and I am very happy with it. It’s compact, light, and thinner than the previous edition.

I actually prefer the micro USB cable since Micro USB cables have a locking device and they are made to be more durable than the Mini USB cables. I dropped the drive off my desk and thanks to the cable’s locking mechanism my MacBook Pro didn’t even realize anything had happened.

Although I am not a fan of the SmartWare included with the drive, a web search for: Western Digital Virtual CD Manager, gave me links to disable the VCD. The software was easy to use on my mac and I had my drive back to simple and single drive in a matter of minutes.

I found the drive to be of equal performance with my other 2.5″ USB drives and I will be ordering another one of these once this drive is filled.

I bought this for my girlfriend because of a previous WD hard drive I had bought. Mine has lasted for5 years and taken countless falls, hits, and random abuse. The extra money spent on a WD hard drive is worth it. The software is a nice bonus and a very simple means of backing up all your stuff, and suggests backing up things I had not even thought of before. A Trluy great purchase

I’ve had this drive for years and finally got around to rating this. Since then Its taken. A crap on me, but I will say it’s lived its life in a matter of speaking about durability and portability. I’ve got a much bigger drive now and its just as portable. Same brand too😊

I guess it’s OK. All I wanted was an external hard drive that just acted like another drive. I find the back up software on it gets in the way.

I bought this hard drive for my girlfriend to use on her 14” laptop. I knew Western Digital’s portable hard drives were compact, but this one was surprisingly small and lightweight even by their standards. She was able to back up the entire contents of her computer and even add some high-definition movies onto the hard drive with plenty of room to spare. It’s easy to use and extremely portable, as the name suggests. This hard drive should easily fit into any laptop case along with your computer. So far, I haven’t seen any performance issues, and it seems to work just as well (if not better) than my Toshiba portable hard drive. This is also one of the least expensive hard drives you can get without having to sacrifice memory.

I just received my real red My Passport Essential 500GB drive. I use it as a portable repository for data and it is replacing a previous WD 250GB that was full. Many have criticized the virtual CD and the fact that part of the drive is partitioned for this software and that partition cannot be removed. Mine came with no virtual CD and no extra partition. There was available software loaded in directories, but I just deleted that since I don’t need it. I’m using this as just a raw drive and it’s great for that purpose. Apparently, WD read the reviews and changed the setup of the drive to eliminate the features so many have complained about. Now it’s just a good, basic, external drive and it is very small.
