This tripp lite outlet extender was excellent for my purpose. The swivel feature helped me connect all of the wall warts that I had on a protected outlet without extenders that I had to use before. It is in the kitchen where an outlet strip is not a reasonable option. The addition of the USB charging ports is also handy, particular for visitors.

A serious quality surge protector for the classic little wall mount plug-in often found on kitchen back splash walls? The folks who make the ISOBAR lines of surge protectors appear to be upping the technical ante here.
PROS:

(1) UL1449 3RD EDITION TESTED (see below for details) with let through 400/400/500V clamping voltage. UL1449 is the UL testing gold standard and 3rd Edition is the latest and most stringent (see below). While 330V clamping voltage would be much better, what can one expect from a surge protector a little bigger than a deck of cards.
(2) EMI/RFI FILTERING for up to 45db noise attenuation.
(3) Has a CIRCUIT BREAKER (15A) in the form of a fuse. If it blows and you meet the warranty qualifications they will send you a replacement.
(4) 1080 Joules AC Suppression and 1875W total outlet watts, which are high for little wall mount plug-ins.
(5) Has some phone/fax line (RJ11) surge protection, as well.
(6) For many decades Tripp Lite has taken the technical high-road and offered product quality/survivability over the long haul and the company appears to make a good faith effort to honor their warranties. A little wall mount plug-in cannot come near the durability/capability of their ISOBAR surge protectors, however I would trust their take on it as a technical best effort within the constraints, and their UL1449 3rd Edition verified status gives that trust some merit.

My SK5TEL holds into the wall very well, however, I would suggest to Tripp Lite that they offer a version that screws the unit into some outlets via the center pin.
Consider offering a version that has 2.1A USB charging receptacles, though of course anyone can plug in charging units.
Consider offering a GFCI version of it.

Okay, so you read somewhere that you want a UL1449 verified/tested product with the lowest clamping voltage you can find, preferably down to 330V, <1 nanosecond response time (SK5TEL has <1ns), etc., but what added value does UL1449 3RD EDITION give us?
UL1449 3rd Edition became effective 09/2009 (it’s an ANSI standard, too, now). Any surge protection device (SPD) made after that must meet the new tests to be UL1449 verified. Why choose a product that meets the new edition of the certification (much less meets any old UL1449 cert.) if you are serious about surge protection? Here are two reasons:
(1) It added a STRESS TEST for Type 3 SPDs (this is Type 3) called the Duty Cycle Test. They electrically whack it 15x to see if they can ruin its ability to protect, cause a fire or shock hazard, etc.
(2) The UL1449 3rd Edition tests with 6x MORE SURGE AMPERAGE than the 2nd Edition test did.

Someone was wondering if this can be placed over a mount screw and the answer is yes, for us it is fitting over a standard duplex outlet receptacle with a mount screw in the middle.
If you are plugging this into a GFCI wall outlet as I did, removing the plastic stability pole that goes into the lower outlet’s ground was fast and easy (I used pliers).
Beware that many small appliances can demand a LOT of power that can add up if used at the same time, so careful not too much at the same time on a single outlet. For example, this unit handles 1875 watts output, but you still want to be careful what you run simultaneously. Some examples (when running of course):
– microwave (600w-800w small, 800w-1650w big)
– toaster (800-1500w)
– coffee pot (1000w-1500w)
– hair dryer (400w-500w on low, 1500w-2000w on high)

Item did not work from the beginning, you can only have a couple of items plugged into it then it stops working. They will take it back but charge a restocking fee and we have to pay for the return as well. For the price of the item you would think it would work or they give you your money back.

This plug-in surge-protector id effective and compact. For equipment adjacent to a plug, it avoids the usual snarl of power-strips, while providing superior surge protection. I shall buy another for a less critical application, on the other side of my bedroom. it is aesthetically pleasing, even where it’s not really essential. Power-cord snarls are messy and are hard to clean around.

Works fine but the outlets are too close to each other so you can’t actually plug in more than two things, and that green light on top that’s always on annoyed me so I had to move it to a less visible place. Get an Anker power strip that switches on and off instead of this.

This is a surge protector at the top of the range. It is faster than most units, higher joule(energy) capacity on surge , better warranty and made by a leader in electronic device protection. I put this on a wall receptacle to protect an upright freezer. It is flatter than other units I researched and cost of losing food when the surge hits is multiple times more than this cost me. My appliance tech said this is a good investment and will save my freezer.

This five-outlet surge protector is better than I expected. I just got it, so can’t rate it for the actual protection, but I’ve had really good results with Tripp Lite for over 30 years. So let’s give the benefit of the doubt to this baby, and start its rating, at 4.
The higher the joules, the more the protection per outlet. This was the highest protection for a wall-mount outlet, I could find.
I live in an area of Houston where storms occur at least once a month, and they always knock out the power. Had the same problem when living in Chitown. Seems that wherever I choose to live, that’s where storms occur. So for 30 years, this has been the story. That matters, in what follows.
As a result, Panamax, Tripp Lite, Belkin have been my ‘protectors’ for my many machines and AV units. Since Panamax designers went wacko and now create SIDE INSERTS for their outlets (thus making the things take up WAY too much space), I reverted to Tripp Lite. Belkin is okay, so long as you don’t select surge protectors with button-on. SWITCH, not button. So the Belkin models are now wacko, too. That leaves Tripp Lite.
Tripp Lite has always been reliable. Problem with it, is the design as well. Design is clunky, metal housing, extremely difficult to maneuver. But always they have the common sense to put outlets ON TOP of the device, never at the sides, and always well-spaced. Unlike the Belkin and Panamax, when Tripp Lite clamps down, it immediately turns back on again. This matters a bunch, for what if a surge occurred and you didn’t know about it, so now your equipment is OFF? If the equipment is your DVD player which enables your Comcast video to work, now you have a lot of futzing to do. If it’s a printer which receives faxes, now it’s off, and maybe you have to reset the time. Meanwhile, you’re missing faxes. Same would be true for your telephone, as with Comcast the phone’s power goes through the cable modem and the router.
In short, it matters how the surge protector behaves: do you have to manually reset it, or does it reset itself? That matters in choosing what to buy. Especially during storm season; where up to every other day, the things are set off by lightning in the area.
This baby resets itself. There’s not even a switch to reset it. My other ones all have switches (not buttons, THANK YOU), and they don’t need to be reset, either (I think one is over 30 years old, my first surge protector).
One more advantage to this particular model: it covers even a damaged face plate. It’s got not just the three-pronged plug, but a ‘dummy’ plug which acts as a ‘bottom prong’ for the SECOND outlet in the wall. So it’s more stable. So until I have time to get the face plate fixed, this puppy works better than the plate itself. And, it makes the plate STAY PUT. That matters a bunch if like me you then plug in two three-pronged cords and an extension.
Hint: never use all the outlets; always keep at least one or two, free. Those same joules then cover fewer outlets so you get more bang for the buck.
For those still using DSL, you have tel outlets, too: really one in, one out. I don’t use DSL anymore, but it can be handy.
Last point: any guarantee or coverage warranty requires you have a FULL LINE COVERAGE under surge protectors. That means, there cannot be ANY unit ANYWHERE CONNECTED to the equipment, which is not covered by a surge protector (usually of that same manufacturer), or the warranty is INvalidated. So don’t plug in your extension cords to the equipment, but then plug the extension itself into a bare wall outlet. Plug it into one of these babies, or another surge protector.
And for my money, despite the ugliness, it’s increasingly Tripp Lite that I buy. Better ugly but well protected and TOP OUTLETS, than the fancy-but-impractical designs Panamax and Belkin are using, these days.
