This printer is REALLY fast and it also does double sided printing, which is useful. It says that it will do 50 pages per minute, but, I swear when I count off the pages, it does closer to 60 ppm. However, the most important feature is that it can fit more than a full pack of paper in the tray so you can print in high volume without having to refill as often. Another benefit of this is that you don’t have to gauge how much of the paper pack you should try and fit in a smaller tray. You just put the whole thing in and it’s fast. Definitely worth the price if these features matter to you. You can buy a wide variety of toners including some that are really high capacity (but these are fairly expensive).

I had a previous Brother laser printer (HL-5250DN) that was a solid workhorse for ten years. I used it in my home office and it had great print quality and the toner cartridges seemed to last forever. (I got an off-brand refilled cartridge once, but went back to Brother’s own cartridges as they gave the best quality results and lasted the longest). Towards the end the paper feed began to jam with paper stuck halfway through printing. I suspect it was the drum unit reaching the end of the line. When the paper finally refused to feed at all, I decided it was time for a new printer. I could have replaced the drum unit, but that would have cost more than half the price of this new printer.
After a month of use, I am happy with this printer, which was the closest I could find to what I had previously had. I mainly chose this model because it came with Wi-fi built in (the HL-5250DN did not, and I had it hard-wired with ethernet to our home network), and it had the option of using super high-yield toner cartridges, which many other models did not. On the whole it appears to be another winner from Brother.
Some reviews have complained about heavy electrical draw, but I’ve not experienced that. We live in an apartment building built over 100 years ago, with not great wiring, and I have had no problem with the printer.
I give this 4 instead of 5 stars only because 1) it takes longer to print the initial page than my former printer (though it then kicks out additional pages at a fast clip), 2) the initial page sometimes (but not always) has an annoying small crease running halfways up the page (I need to trouble-shoot what’s up with that), and 3) it is kind of loud in printing. I consider those minor issues.
Set-up was much more of a breeze than I expected. I did go to the Brother website and downloaded the latest drivers, but also used the included CD of drivers and set-up wizard and it found our home network Wi-fi and that was that. We have my Mac and my wife’s PC on our network and both work fine with it. We’ve even printed from our iPhones and my iPad to it, which was a nice touch.
Bottom line: am I pleased? Yes.

I print roughly 1K sheets/week on this and have owned it now for almost 4 years. I’ve never had an issue! The toner cartridges last a long time and I’ve only had to replace the drum kit ONCE. This is hands-down the best printer I’ve ever owned.

I bought this printer to replace a Brother HL-5170DN unit that was taken out with a lightning surge. I loved that printer for its quality, features and reliability. When I had to replace it, the HL-L6200DW seemed like a great option with all the same features and more. I don’t print that much, so the printer was put online, tested okay and was used sparingly for 3-4 months. That’s when the print quality issue first raided its ugly head.
Printed output on recommended paper using the Brother supplied toner cartridge started leaving horrible streaks all over the pages. I opened the printer to see what the problem was and found loose toner everywhere. We’re talking industrial waste site here there was so much loose toner all over the place. I had access to a special vacuum made for cleaning up laser printers (very small micron filter) and cleaned it all up as well as pulling the toner and drum assembly and cleaning them thoroughly per the procedures on the Brother support site. After putting the printer back online, I got maybe 10 sheets printed before we were back to the same problem.
I called Brother support and explained the situation, and they suspected a bad toner cartridge or drum. Since the warranty for consumables with this printer is 90 days and I was past that time period, they were reluctant to help at all. After a little discussion with the second line manager, they eventually agreed to send me a replacement toner cartridge. I was happy with this as I was still a Brother fan and figured I got a lemon toner cartridge with the printer. Stuff happens.
The toner cartridge arrives in a couple of days as promised, and I cleaned up the industrial waste site yet again inside the printer. Cleaned the drum (again) and put it all back online. All was well and I was a happy Brother customer….for about a week. Here come the toner smears all over the pages once again. Same exact issue as before. Opened the printer back up, and you guessed it…..toner all over the place.
That was when I started searching online for others with similar experiences with this printer and found a lot of folks had the toner issues as well as bonus paper handling issues that I has yet to experience. It appears that there is about a 50/50 chance you either get a good printer that works properly or you get the printers that have these types of problems. It makes a person wonder if these are built in multiple locations and some sites have quality issues, or if some printers work well out of the box for a longer period of time than others.
At this point, I had lost all faith in Brother and their printers and decided to cut my losses and move on. Next step with the Brother would have been a new drum, and it made more sense to me to take that money and move on to something else. I went with a comparable HP printer and had no issues at all. The experience with the new HP printer reminded me of the one I had with my original Brother HL-5170DN. It just worked and did what it was supposed to right out of the box.
So if you are still with me and want to take a gamble that you will get a “good” Brother HL-L6200DW, be sure you run a lot of pages through it within the 90 day consumables warranty period so you can return it if necessary. Also, open the printer and pull out the toner/drum assembly to make sure you don’t have the toner leakage problem. Believe me, you’ll see plenty of loose toner if you get a printer that has the problem. Best of luck to you and I hope you have a better experience than I did.
