Recently I needed to scan crates of old family photographs before I put them in storage or sent them on to relatives. I already had a scanner but it wasn’t good for the job. The Canon LiDE 400 was the solution I needed.
QUALITY OF THE PHOTOS
The LiDE 400 gives me good-quality scans of my photographs. It is good enough for family photos that I will pass on to other relatives and probably never touch again. The maximum resolution is 1200×1200 dots per inch. I can scan tiny pictures at that resolution and enlarge them to see details I would have missed otherwise. (Although this depends on the quality of the original pictures.)
AUTOMATION
The LiDE 400 has an auto-scan feature, which makes it easier to get through a lot of pictures. You can put a photograph on the scan bed and press a single button. The scanner will automatically scan the picture at 300 dpi, crop and rotate the picture, and place it in a folder on your computer.
Sometimes the auto-scan feature doesn’t do exactly what I expect. Sometimes it crops off the white boarders in a weird way. Occasionally it decides to make my photos into PDF files instead of JPEGs. If this becomes a problem, you can use the ScanGear software that comes with the scanner, which gives more control over the process. or you can use your own software, like Photoshop.
The scanner is also good for creating PDFs of old documents. You can scan multiple pages into one PDF file.
OTHER NOTES
The scanner was easy to set up and use. It has a single USB-C cable. There is not separate power cord. When I plugged the scanner into my computer for the first time, Windows downloaded the driver automatically and the scanner was ready to go.
If you are in a similar situation, I think this scanner will work well for you too.

Fast and simple software install. The platen locks by a sliding switch under the unit for storage or moving. Thin and light-weight construction. Inexpensive scanner with USB connection.

This came as if it was a return. It took a good while to find out how to install. But finally managed it. It comes with a compact disc which was unusable. It was easy to select the pixels but super slow for the higher pixilation which means I had a similar canon model in 2005 and it’s not moved on in any way. I’m fact it’s a bit inferior as some scans had a blurry part. But it does the job. Not as good as it previous models but there are times when phone scanners won’t cut it.

A compact A4 size scanner doing well with Windows 11 too !!

Honestly there are no better scanners in the marketplace than Canon Lide. I owned one for more than 15 years and the only reason I had to get rid of it was because it was outdated. I never had a problem ever with my Canon scanner. This cannon scanner was a little bit more complicated to set up but once it was set up it works flawlessly. It has great features probably some that I’ll never use but if you need it in your workspace it will not disappoint you. They are super reliable very well made and I highly recommend this product to everyone needing to get a really good scanner.

First off, let me start with saying I wanted to like this product. That was short lived.
Right out of the box the installation was easy and then it went downhill. The driver that connects the scanner to the computer does not work. Even after being on the phone with Canon for 30 minutes. I tried Windows and Mac with no success. All I keep getting is Code 2,156,33 which no documentation exists for these particular errors.
The real kicker however is the terrible support structure for the product. In order to contact Canon you need to create an account and register your product. This is where I had even more trouble. When I tried to register my product it did not recognize my serial number, so I could not complete registration. But you cannot get support options until you register. So I was stuck in this loop and it became very frustrating. Finally I found Canons number on google. It went to the sales team, so they transferred me to customer service. Once connected I received an automated agent requesting the phone number associated with my account. Well since I could not complete registration, the phone number did not exist in the system. After attempting to put my phone number in several times and verbally saying representative, the automated system hung up on me and I immediately went into blood boiling mode.
I then tried calling the number several times again and sat on the phone for 30 a piece trying to reach someone again with no luck. I then proceeded to call the general Canon number and an automated system pushed me to the customer service line where I had to put my number in again. Back to the loop. I called the general number again and went the sales route. From there I was begging the sales rep to put me in contact with someone because I am at my office space moment with this product. Luckily he did get me in contact with someone and I troubleshooted with Canon for a little over 30 minutes. No luck. They didn’t know what the problem is and told me to contact Microsoft. OK THAT’S IT. I’m done.
I will be returning this product and walking away from the Canon brand all together. I suggest people be aware of the troubles you may face if your product does not work.

I received this LiDE 400 scanner about a week ago and finally hooked it up to try it out. Setup on Windows was super quick with the included CD. The stand that holds the scanner vertical while not in use is handy, but is a bit of a pain to click into place without picking everything up. The mechanism makes sense, so I assume I’ll get used to it and be able to click it into the stand easier the more I use it.
Image quality it quite good for a $100 scanner. I’m not using it for professional photo scanning, so I’m not super concerned about 100% image quality. I scanned a couple 4×6 photos at various DPI settings, and a couple documents. Other than the typical sensitivity to invisible dust on the scanner bed or photo, the scans looked really good. I recommend keeping a lint-free cloth nearby if you’ll be using this all the time. I definitely can’t complain with the first few scans this thing produced.
My only concern came after I looked through the papers that came in the box. The Canon warranty card states in the terms and conditions, “Canon USA Inc. guarantees that it will repair each new CanoScan LiDE Series product manufactured or supplied by the Latin America Group of Canon USA Inc. and sold by Canon USA Inc.’s authorized distributor, which is intended for the markets of Latin America and the Caribbean only and is defective in materials or workmanship under normal conditions of use and service…etc etc etc (the terms included other devices and extra words, but I figured this gets the point across).
I don’t recall ever seeing a write-up like this in other electronics I’ve bought. Maybe this just comes in every Canon LiDE scanner regardless of where you buy it from. I’m not too concerned because even if it broke I’m sure the return shipping would be more than the used unit is worth. Still, the specificity of the terms mentioning Latin America makes me think Amazon is selling possibly unwarrantied devices meant for another region. Maybe this regional requirement isn’t actually a big deal, I’m not sure. I just figured I would mention this in case it is possibly an actual issue for Amazon buyers looking for warranty claims.

Excellent scanner, works great with included software or third party software.
I bought this when digitizing my family’s old photos. Compared to the quality of my standard all-in-one printer, it’s amazing. I’ve scanned many photos on true to life, and even saved some photos we thought we totally lost due to over exposure or being too dark.
Incredibly easy to set up, beautiful quality, if you’re questioning if it’s worth it, it absolutely is
