Very fast and reliable modem. I haven’t had problems with the modem itself. My internet is up to 60mbp. During non-rush hour, I can actually get up to that speed when performing speed test! I have Teksavvy cable connection.

As is the case with many of the reviews, my five-star rating of the ARRIS SB6141 hinges more upon the practical aspects of my use of the modem than the technical merits of the product. Like many people, I stare resentfully at my cable bill each month but had not taken the step of eliminating the rental fee for my cable modem. For me, it was $10 a month to Time Warner Cable. It had been $8 per month until recently. A USA Today article on the subject prompted me finally to take action.

That article contained a link to another article that recommended the SB6141. It was listed on the TWC website as an approved modem for faster speeds than I pay for currently, so that was good. Even at increased speeds the modem would be fine. The Amazon reviews were good. And at about $70, the modem would pay for itself and the sales tax in less than eight months. What really pushed me to buy a new modem was the mention in the article of DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) standards. DOCSIS 2.0 came out in 2001, and the article suggested if you were paying to rent a DOCSIS 2.0 modem it would be a good idea to move to a 3.0 modem. I looked up the specifications of my expensive-to-rent Motorola SB5120 modem and it was of course a 2.0 device. I was a little concerned about the hassle of getting the new modem to work, but I was going to move forward.

Swapping the new modem for the old was a simple matter of unplugging the three connections of my old modem and connecting the SB6141. One article about activating a purchased modem on the TWC website said you could activate it online, and another said to identify the MAC number of your new modem and call TWC to activate it. I tried to activate online but was unsuccessful, so I called TWC. After explaining that I wanted to activate a new modem and providing my account information, the representative noted that I had been using the same modem since 2005. 2005! Gee, has technology changed at all in eleven years? That is what is so frustrating about the cable companies. Tired, outdated equipment and ever increasing rates. Don’t get me started on my lame 1990’s tech DVR. The representative activated my new modem, kept me on the line to confirm it was working as it should, and without my asking removed the $10 per month charge while I waited. I have to return my old modem, but he removed the rental charge. Seven minutes later, I hung up the phone and went on with my life. It was that quick.

This was only last week, so I can’t speak to the durability of the SB6141. Our speeds are at least as good as before, and we have experienced no issues. As has been mentioned the lights on the front of the modem are exceptionally bright; blue light even emits from the vent holes on the sides and top of the device. In summary, I am writing to encourage those who are considering buying a modem to eliminate a rental fee to do so. The modem is reasonably priced, works well, and installation and activation were simple. It’s all good.

I bought this cable modem because I did not want to be a victim of Time Warner Cable’s leased modems. This is my first time being a Time Warner Cable customer, and during installation, I handed this modem over to the cable guy (who looked a bit disappointed that I had my own modem, for some reason), who set up everything without a hitch by calling Time Warner Cable and giving them the HSC MAC ID. For those of you who want to buy this modem to replace TWC’s leased modems, just call them and give them the HSC MAC ID, and they’ll activate it for you (you might have to reset the modem after activation to get things going).

Anyways, moving on to function and reliability, this modem is great! The speed of the internet plan I pay for is 15 Mbps (there is a difference between MB/s and Mbps, as 8 Mb = 1 MB), and after doing a speed test at speedtest.net, my ping is 9-11 ms, and my download speed ranged from 14-16 Mbps (usually 16 Mbps), which is great. So far, there hasn’t been any bumps in the road, and I haven’t experienced any downtime in connectivity or anything.

On a somewhat related note, I also purchased a router because I wanted WiFi as well, seeing that I have tablets, smartphones, and game consoles in the house. The router I’m using is a “Factory Refurbished NETGEAR WNDR3400 N600 Wireless-N Dual Band Router” (I literally copied the title and pasted it here). Since it’s refurbished, no CD came in the box, so I just connected the router to the modem, and connected the router to my computer (with an Ethernet cable, not through WiFi). Internet didn’t work at first, but I assume there was some automatic setup processing somewhere (probably something to do with assigning an IP address or something) because eventually internet access returned within a few minutes. I then went to http://192.68.1.1 (default username: admin, default password: password), and set everything up, and soon had working WiFi within 15 minutes. Despite being refurbished, this router works like it’s new.

In short, this modem is working properly, has a stable connection to the Internet, and is giving me the speeds that I paid for (which is all that I ask for). It also works well with the “Factory Refurbished NETGEAR WNDR3400 N600 Wireless-N Dual Band Router,” which is easy to set up if you have basic knowledge of setting up networks, configuring IP address, etc.

Edit (11/13/14): It’s been about 3 and 1/2 months since I’ve been using this modem, and I’ve had zero problems with it so far. In this span of time, I’ve only had to restart the modem once (internet outage), and everything was fine after that. Not sure what caused the internet to go wonky, but I highly doubt this will be anything to worry about.

Plug and Play, worked perfectly with my service provider. I’ve had it for a while now and never any trouble. Very fast.

It’s tough enough in Canada to find a really top quality modem that is not a rental from an ISP. This things FLIES. Seriously reliable, takes advantage of ALL bandwidth and never lets me down. Connects to ISP on boot in 15 seconds. Perfect.

My old Rogers modem was crapping out, rebooting under stress of high use, giving me the opportunity to switch to Teksavvy.

After some research I decided the best modems a) are not bundled with wifi routers and b) are Motorola. So I got this one, and it works great.

It has 8-band support, as opposed to the 4-band support most of the other ones have, even though those speeds are generally unaffordable at this time, I love a good future proof value proposition.
