Work perfectly and reliable. I install them on commercial venues and not having to reboot the setup is critical, because i would have to send a technician.
I suggest to have a good, stable router behind this one to take care of pppoe.

By factory default, VPI/VCI is 0.35.
You can change it of course but in my case it’s perfect since it’s the VPI/VCI used by Bell (here in Montreal at least)
be carefull, it only works for DSL / DSL2+, NOT the “new fancy” “fibe” from bell, wich uses VDSL and only works with the !*^%#* bell modem

I bought this modem to replace an aging Actiontec M1000 which had been working for many years in bridge mode. While the M1000 was still mostly functioning, I was beginning to notice some flakiness (random disconnects, slow re-training speed.) So before the modem went out completely and I was left without net access, I decided to give the TP-LINK TD-8616 a try. At a bit over $20.00 I figured I could take a gamble on an “unsupported” modem for CenturyLink DSL.

The modem worked perfectly out of the box with CenturyLink. The only thing I had to do was give it the same IP address on the LAN side that the M1000 had. This was not strictly necessary to get DSL access to work but it allows me access to the modem’s management interface through my router (a Netgear WNDR3500L v2 running Shibby Tomato 1.28 v128.)

The modem compares favorably with the Actiontec M1000, at least on my phone line. It is very slightly faster on the download at 20127 vs 20123 and very slightly faster on the upload at 892 vs 889. Obviously these are not differences than would be noticeable on even the most accurate of tests, so its a wash from a bandwidth perspective. What I did notice was a decrease in my first hop latency (the latency to the router at the other “end” of the DSL line) from around 18-19 ms to 12-13 ms. Again, nothing earth shattering but given that I game online and have my phone service through Ooma (VoIP) I’ll take any latency reduction I can get. Finally, the TD-8616 is noticeably faster when syncing to CenturyLink’s DSL service. What could take almost a minute and sometimes more using the M1000 is now down to well under 30 seconds. Again, nothing that should impact daily use, but again no worse than the M1000.

I attribute most of these improvements to a newer chipset in the modem. My M1000 has been service since 2009 and the model has been for sale since at least 2007; 8 years is a long time in the tech field. The 8616 supports all the latest ADSL/2/+ protocols including Annex M (up to 3.5 Mb upload speed.) Unfortunately, CenturyLink doesn’t appear to support anything beyond Annex A in my area. The only downside to this modem is that it has a much simpler statistics page. The M1000 would show not only connection rates, signal to noise ratio and line attenuation, but also number of correcteable and uncorrecteable errors and number of retrains. The 8616 just shows the first 3. This is a minor quibble in my book, especially given the price vs getting another ADSL2 modem from CenturyLink (currently $99.)

So if you have no problem accessing your router and setting up your PPPoE authentication, then this ADSL2+ modem is for you. However, if the previous line makes you blink in confusion, stop right there and spend the few extra bucks on the TD-8816, which comes with a built in router. Or any of the many all in one units that combine a modem, router and wireless access point. And for god sakes, don’t downrate the unit because you don’t understand how it is meant to be used.

WOW all I can say is that I am truly impressed with this DSL modem. It is easily twice as fast as the D-Link modem that it replaced. It looks different than pictured, infact it looks better than pictured. Do yourself a favor and take screenshots of all your settings from your old modem. You’ll need things like your internet account name and password, ect. Once you have those it is pretty straight forward. I’ve been using AT&T internet (sadly) and have ALWAYS had issues with pages loading properly. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve had to reboot that D-Link modem (and this was the second D-Link used) at least 6 or 7 times each day. That’s why I finally said that it’s time to get a new modem, but it is hard to find a straight DSL modem WITHOUT a router or wireless bundled into the mix. I just needed the modem section. Finally I found this one, and boy am I glad that I bought it! Took a little while to get it running but that’s not the modems fault (at&t couldn’t find the correct DSL server settings). Once I was able to configure everything correctly, this little gem took off like a rocket and now my Internet works – incredibly fast – and smooth. I never heard of TP-Link before and thought that I was just wasting my time buying this, but like I said I didn’t have many options as there aren’t many stand alone modems on the market, so I bought this one. However I can gladly say that this modem is built well and has really impressed me with its incredible performance thus far. This modem is a real bargain for all that it delivers! I’ll update if I have any issues with it, but so far it is working better than any other modem that I have tried, and I’ve tried pretty much all of them. I would give this ten stars if they were available.

    UPDATE: 12-19-11

Our modem just stopped working. I can get it to connect to the internet but cannot access the control panel (192.168.1.1). There is probably a way to reset it (tried the reset button but it didn’t work) but I simply do not have the time to call support. I might try another one, however I probably won’t buy it from here as they have almost doubled the price recently.

Before I review I must say I could not use this modem. Ill explain why…

Before you purchase a modem you need to check your internet set up. If your current modem (or set up) uses a cable vs a phone wire this is NOT for you! Second…Find out if your cable is VDSL or ADSL by contacting your internet provider (or google). this makes a big difference! This modem is ADSL. Not all of Windstream is ADSL..and that is the company I use.

My review is based off of connecting to the wireless and reviewing the set up instructions.

Set up: there are only 3 ports in the back of this modem which are very clearly labeled. (no abbreviations!) its very very easy to know what goes where. The instructions that come with this modem are very easy to read. It walks you through step by step with pictures for each step. You couldn’t mess this up if you tried.

Size: this modem is very small but from all of the reviews ive read, very powerful. its the size of two iphones side by side and two iphones high. (easiest explanation! hah)
