I purchased 3 of these units (the 2 unit kit plus one additional) for my home media distribution. Originally I had planned to use only wireless, but found too many signal disruptions causing HD video to become choppy or drop completely. I have one connected to a Linksys DMA2100 extender, one to my DirecTV HD DVR and one to my Vista Media server. DirecTV VOD works flawlessly, as does the extender. This solution is more expensive than running CAT6, but it is so easy to set up and use that I didn’t mind the extra cost. Another thing: one of these units is in my family room, and I was worried about the green lights being a distraction. There is a utility that comes with these devices that allows you to turn the indicators off if you desire. Overall, I’ve been very happy with these units.

I have 3 of these units and they work like a charm. Totally plug-n-play. Built in encryption, very reliable and fast. I have used these in both a hues and a condo with never any problems. They easily support high speed transfers and are unaffected by brown-outs. So many electronic equipment goes into an unknown state after a brown-out and needs to be reset. I never reset these units!

When I got my Series 2 TiVo about three years ago, I purchased two Netgear Powerline adapters which worked great with the TiVo and for accessing the internet from another room which got poor Wi-Fi reception. Recently, I purchased a TiVo HD and wanted to put the old Series 2 in another room. I purchased one Netgear XAV101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter. When I hooked it up, my TiVo could not access it. I got an error NO2 which indicated a problem with accessing the DNS server. Upon careful research at TiVo and Netgear sites, I discovered the new XAV101 adapter was not compatible with my older XE102 adapters. This information was not clearly spelled out in the product description on the Amazon site. Now, I’m faced with trying to return the XAV101 and getting an Netgear XE102 Powerline Ethernet Adapter which appears to be out of stock as of 6/23/09.
Casual Surveyor –
I have one local (master) unit and two remote units. At first they worked reasonable well to transmit HD video from Netflix on our Roku HD players. Lately they started to hang up and stutter (red light = < 50 Mbps). Even SD picture quality fell dramatically (two dots out of four on Roku) due to low data rate. I went to the netgear website to see if the FAQ might help. Although extensive, there wasn't anything there that solved my problems. No free human support available by phone or email. They offer a software configuration utility to perform a factory reset (can also be done by pushing a reset button on each unit). The software also can update the firmware in the units. Unfortunately their US download site is buggy and you can't get the file to download (they have an extensive download support page explaining how their website is great and that the inability to download files is the user's fault, not their bad website). Fortunately I found the same file on their German website, which was working and I was able to easily download it like any normal file. Once I got that software installed, the factory reset worked but the firmware update failed. You could see it start to update the firmware, then the software would say "failed to update the firmware" with no further explanation. I tried plugging each unit right into the network. Even with a direct ethernet connection at 200 Mbps, they still couldn't update. Right now I am getting link rates of ~100 Mbps on one remote unit in the bedroom and ~75 Mbps on the other one in the kitchen, which is not really very good considering the high price of these adapters.

My house only has one wired outlet for internet access, which meant one computer in the house had a direct wired connection to my router and the rest of my internet ready devices (10+ including cell phones) had to rely on WiFi. While I love WiFi and find it a necessity in my house, it does have limitations, such as weak signal in the farthest reaches of the house and throughput issues when downloading big files such as HD video. My biggest complaint with WiFi was that on my Tivo and LG Blueray Player, streaming HD videos was sometimes a buffering nightmare, but that’s no longer the case with these little gadgets. HD Video and everything else stream flawlessly, no more “hold please, while buffering” and no more dropped connections. In two years of consistent use, I have never had a single problem. For the average user, you won’t be able to tell the difference between this connection and the direct connection to your cable modem. Also, set up is a breeze, the units are literally plug and play: just plug them into the wall, plug in your Ethernet cables, and presto your done!
This is a much faster, simpler, and less expensive alliterative to running Ethernet cable through your walls to achieve fast and reliable internet throughout your house.
