I bought this shredder to replace my previous one after it died, and specifically looked to buy an American-made product. This shredder is used in a small office/room, and although it is a bit smaller than my previous one, it works for me. I’m at the end of stage of converting all of our important documents to a digital format and have had the opportunity to use it intermittently and it works just fine. It is not as quiet as I expected, but it’s certainly not loud. I appreciate that it does not need oil.

Had another Royal shredder, and it was a piece of rubbish. I wanted a medium duty shredder which is what this one is. It was a special buy for Amazon Prime Members. I needed to save money if possible. I was a bit reluctant to buy another Royal product It was the best deal I could find for the money. I decided to take a chance. It is so much better that the other Royal shredder I have, I can’t believe it’s made by the same company. It does the job with no drama, no problems, no jams, no paper scraps going all over the place when you need to empty the bin. So far I’m happy with it.

I actually love the shredder – so far – its much quieter than the simlar Fellowes I had. It is rated for 12 sheets and will ACTUALLY shred 12 sheets. I dont plan to do that often as it does struggle a bit, but didnt jam. I ordered one w/casters for the convenience. But the 1st time I moved it, one caster fell out. I determined the circular spring clip on top the the post, was missing. There clips hold the casters in. I called the Royal 800 # and was told I needed to ship the Shredder to them and they would sent out a new one. I said IT WORKS FINE – I just need a Caster. He said Sorry, thats the procedure.
I wrote to their Customer service asking them to send me a caster. In the meantime some electrical tape wrapped around the post is holding the caster in place. It dont swivel as easily, but its a good ‘temp fix’. We will see what Royal says. If they wont send a caster, I’ll buy a new one b4 I will pay to ship the whole thing back. Besides, I KNOW this is a good shredder, by exchanging I MIGHT get a piece of crap unit. If it weren’t for this service issue, I would have given a 5 star rating…

Buying another today as we wore out the one we bought 5 years ago. I love that it has wheels so I can move it around and sweep under it. It’s fast and reliable. Cuts anything we put in it and works a long time before heating up. The fwd/reverse feature is great and always unsticks the jam. The bucket holds loads of shred, too. The top is flat and cleans easily. I loved it so much and can’t wait for the new one.

My comments below are addressing these 3 issues:
1 How to permanently fix the motor overheating
2 How prevent motor thermal shut-down
3 How considerably improve the duty cycle.
I am sharing this info with you with the hope it may save you some time.
Did purchase this unit from Costco about 6 years ago, in 2010.
This unit is functioning well today except its motor was overhearing and going into automatic thermal shut-down.
The ROYAL PX1201 model # is PCUA: 29127H-FE ; the Lot # 111155925.
Had to open the motor enclosure quite few times for cleanup and cooling.
Note the manufacturer’s recommended duty cycle is ON=6min / OFF=30min. Nobody I know has 30min time to babysit a shredder.
In thermal shut-down mode the motor would not turn in any direction.
Today I modified the ROYAL PX1201 by adding an external 12V DC computer fan for motor cooling.
Cut a fan-placement, round, 3.25inch hole into the shredder top, at the upper right of the paper-insert slit: ____O
External, room-air is being forced into the motor-and-gear enclosure at all times, non-stop.
The paper-insert slit provides the hot-air exhaust.
The fan is an ordinary plastic PC fan: 12V DC, 0.12A=120mA, XYZ=72*72*20mm ; diagonal=101mm (hole-to-hole).
Fan cost is around $5.- and the fan power supply was a separate 12V DC adapter.
Did not have time to electrically connect the fan to the shredder’s internal power supply.
Today I used the shredder continuously for 8 hours with neither overheating nor thermal shutdown.
Did fill TEN 13-gallon plastic bags with shredded paper / hand compacted confetti.
On average I shredded 6 letter-size, normal thickness pages at a time / per feed, continuous feed for 8 non-stop hours.

This is a good shredder, we had the same one for years and it performed well during thousands of pages of shredding. Eventually the the motor started to slow down and it was having difficulty getting through just a few sheets. The new one, the exact same model is working really well and we are very pleased with it.

We went through several shredders of another more expensive brand that worked. but didn’t last long. Purchase a Royal brand from the same place, and got much better life out of it. Finally wore it out, so bought another one from Amazon, since I couldn’t find it anywhere else. It is working just fine. This one is great for home use, but I would get a more expensive version for commercial use.
