I’m a writer, and I keep a few different notebooks for different purposes like brainstorming, morning pages, and rough drafts of various projects. These are my new favorite notebooks.

    Size & Weight:

The size and weight of these notebooks are perfect. They’re thin enough to fit into my netbook case alongside the device but are large enough that I don’t fill them up too quickly like I would a 7×9 notebook. The weight of the paper is just right, too. It doesn’t tear easily or crinkle up because you accidentally slid your hand across it.

    Sturdiness:

These notebooks feel substantial in my hand and not flimsy. The cover is actually quite durable, which I didn’t expect when I first started using them. I pick these up and move them around frequently, stuff them into my netbook case and my backpack, have my cats kick them around, and they’re holding up just fine. Also, I use a fountain pen, and the paper is of good enough quality that the ink doesn’t bleed through.

    Favorite Features:

I really love the narrow rule–it’s HARD to find truly narrow-ruled paper. Also, they lie flat, another thing that’s hard to find in a notebook without a spiral binding getting in the way. Lastly, there’s a pocket in the back cover for other notes I need to tuck in to keep tidy and reference later.

I plan to keep a stack of these at the ready going forward.

If you’re reading this review, there’s a good chance you’ve owned a Moleskine product previously. If that’s the case, you get exactly what you’d expect from these Cahier journals. The paper is the same make and quality as their hard binding products and the “softback” type as well. The binding on these is a lot simpler and is similar to to a simple magazine binding (the type that uses staples in the center, not the glued type) except these are actually stitched together, which makes for something of a rustic feel. The cover is a pressed cardboard material as opposed to the typical Moleskine leather-type substance. It is durable and unlike the typical cover, you can actually write on these with typical writing instruments (pen, pencil, etc) which can be quite useful for personalizing your Moleskine. I rather like this style of cover and own both the red and the natural brown kraft. The red is a bit more muted than the red leatherette Moleskines, but it still has a very rich look. There is a flap on the inside back cover for storage, but don’t expect to put a lot back there.

These come with 3 individual journals, which makes them rather economical for various purposes. The size is exactly as described in the dimensions section and is a very comfortable size for writing and general use. (Some of the small moleskines are difficult to write in unless you are sitting at a desk, or even then if your hands are large like mine). I have unlined Cahiers that I use as sketchbooks and they’re great for that purpose. To some extent, this different cover type makes these Moleskines the ones I turn to most often when I just want to put pen or pencil to paper.

Someone else voiced disappointment in the paper of their cahier for sketching. I’m comparing 3 different Moleskines and there may be slightly more texture to the unlined cahier in front of me compared to a ruled standard hardback and a graphpaper softback. It is very subtle. I’ve been using pencil in this sketchbook and it is absolutely wonderful for taking the graphite. It really does give excellent control while still maintaining a smooth texture (as opposed to thicker art pads I own which have too much texture for my taste). I also own a ruled cahier kraft medium sized and red ruled cahier and there is absolutely no difference I can feel in the papers of the lined cahier and standard Moleskines. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Great sketchbook IMHO. No complaints at all. Enjoy!

I’ve tried few fountain pens and every nib, every ink bled through. Even Parker quink gel bled. Inks, Herbn and KWZ feathered a lot. For use with pencil or ballpoint maybe

I dislike writing (or diagramming etc.) on lined/ruled pages, and it can be challenging to find blank notebooks or writing-books with quality paper. Moleskine always delivers. Creamy, smooth, thick-enough off-white paper that’s a pleasure to write or draw on, bound neatly in sturdy volumes, for reasonable prices.

Delivered on time in perfect condition.

I liked how it handled alot of the mediums I’m comfortable with using and it’s cheap , the only downsides are the paper is thin, if you use like markers itll bleed. But it’s a journal not a sketchbook, so due to that it’s great.

Of all Moleskine notepads I like this format the best. Don’t be misguided by the name “XLarge”. They are still much smaller than letter page or A4. It’s a decent sized cahier that you will love to take with you. But it is large enough to give you the right amount of space for reasonable notes.

Of course, the texture of the paper is excellent. It gives your pen a lot of extra control. Your handwriting will be more pronounced and more pleasant to read when you look back at your notes.

I highly recommend this product, even compared to other Moleskine products.

If you have gotten into the habit of carrying a Moleskine notebook (or two), you know exactly what I mean by plain and perfect. Moleskine notebooks don’t have fancy graphics or anything special at first glance, but once you start carrying one, you realize just how handy it is to have a notebook that is perfectly designed. Each notebook has a pocket for carrying slips of paper (I call this size notebook “Expense Report Size”), and the last sixteen pages of the notebook are perforated if you need to write down and message, tear it out and give it someone having the last pages perf’ed lets you give the other person a neat message without messing up your own notebook. I don’t know, having something that is perfectly designed for me and for what I’m doing makes me feel a little special.

Yup, that’s me, treating myself by getting a notebook. woo.

My favorite notebooks. For sketching, notetaking, or journaling. I can draw or write my own cover and enables me space to record everything I want to write down or draw. I buy the 3 packs.
