I’ve been using 3m tape for my engraving business for years. Never had an issue. They are the best in the business. This tape works well for masking. Medium tack, or it can be squeegeed or rolled for a higher tack. I use it for paint masking and as a transfer tape for vinyl. It is a little too strong for application tape though. Works very well to engrave through and then paint fill. It will lift some paint or varnish surfaces if not applied correctly or fully cured.

I bought it to mask wood and acrylic for my laser cutter, thinking 3M would be a hood brand. It is awful. I don’t know how many layers I peeled off trying to get it to peel off a whole piece. Instead, it just broke off in tiny pieces and is completely worthless to me that way. I should have waited for delivery a bit longer and chosen another brand.

I bought this as a cheap alternative to the blue tape.
I needed to make a camouflage pattern on a homemade project.
What can I say? IT WORKS!
I taped up some CDX plywood (there was a base coat of paint) and painted over the tape. Left everything outside for 3 days (November 4th – 7th…frosty nights) and the tape stayed put.
Good adhesion, lots of tape for less $$.

I bought this to use to mask material I cut and engrave with my Glowforge. It works perfectly! It’s easy to apply and easy to remove after cutting/engraving is complete.

I’ve found all the masking wide (and cheap) tapes are so hard to take off without it ripping apart. This one was especially bad being 6″ wide. But, like all of them, once you get past about 6-7 rounds it gets stronger. I’m thinking it has something to do with that tape being on the outside of the roll, UV light, breaking down…I don’t know. All I know if if you can get past the frustration of the first 8 or so revolutions of tape being garbage….the roll itself is amazing. I’m here to buy it again, if that tells you something. (All those who gave it one star for this reason, tear a whack off and keep at it -you’ll actually love it – so nice to have 6″ when masking for the laser!)

It is low tack! I used it on plexiglass for a laser cutter. It left no sticky residue once I pealed it off. But like other reviewers I found it difficult to pull off and ripped a fair amount. It might get better once you unroll a few layers but I haven’t tried that yet. It was faster for me to use 3 inch wide tape.

So, for the price, it’s definitely great and there isn’t a ton of choice for masking tape in this width (I got 6” wide in case this review attaches to all widths). It came packed in a bubblepack bag, and had a bunch of dents on both ends from being bounce, so, as I tried to peel a clean piece, it’d get hung up there and tear… repeatedly… for at least the first 4-5 yards I pulled. I was using this to cover the bed on my 3D printer so double layers and tears can cause weirdness on the print (or: ruin it when the print head hits a bump). It eventually did work out, and was the amount of adhesion I needed for that; it stuck, but I didn’t need a blow torch and a hand grenade to remove it after use. If it has been better packed, I might have rated it better, but I definitely felt like I got ripped every time to tape ripped.

I am unable to unroll this tape in one piece without it ripping. I have tried many times and am unable to get past a couple of inches without a tear. I have had another person help me and it still tears very quickly. It defeats the purpose of spending the money on 6” tape if it will not come off the role in one piece. I wouldn’t spend the money on this tape.

This is so much more economical than purchasing the 6″ square sheets for 3D printing. I use an Exacto knife to cut the tape after tacking it down on the 3d printer bed. I then use the wide/flat scraper to make sure everything is smooth before I print. I then use Elmer’s Glue Stick to make the PLA stick to the tape. It’s great!

First the negatives. This it thin masking tape and it rips very easily. In that it takes a considerable amount of effort to pull the tape off the roll. It will rip from the sides every inch or less from one side or the other. This makes it hard to use.

Why did I Buy this? We have a new cat and the new cat wants to claw my couches! This was a very cheap solution to cat scratch training. This tape is wonderful for having the right amount of sticky to hold it to my leather couches, but comes off when I needed it to. Most training tapes say not for leather. I found that with this wide roll, I can reverse the first inch on the top and bottom and have sticky side out. Cats hate sticky. This curbed the behavior and the color wasn’t bad as I have beige leather. This worked better than a squirt gun or yelling at the cat.

So the tape did the job, but I can’t imagine trying to use this for painting or anything lease were you would want large section of tape. The ripping could be from damage to the edges of the roll caused by delivery or it is simply because the roll is very wide. I can see some minor bumps, but it rips from the sides more than it unrolls. Luckily I was able to pull off enough to train my cats, so I am still happy.

Works well for masking wood for CO2 laser work.

I bought this specifically because I needed wide strips of masking tape. This stuff is impossible to pull off in a single piece and rips readily. Regrettably, it’s completely useless for my purchase. Lesson learned.
