Received the toaster today and put it to work right away. I like my toast to be really toasted so I put some of Panera’s thick-cut classic sourdough in the toaster at the #3 darkness setting. It burned but only on one side. The other side was extremely light. Next I tried the #2 setting in the other slot and got the same result as the previous test with only a tiny bit of burning around the edges. Finally I tried the #1 setting. That worked fine. The toast looked nice ‘n brown like I want it — but I had to put it down a second time, turning the bread around so I could toast the other side. That made the first side a little burned around the edges. Still, it tasted good. I didn’t let the #1 toasting time go all the way to pop up either time. Just trying to keep it from burning.
Now an explanation for why I posted two pictures. One shows tthe toaster looks from a distance (I’d give it a good grade for that), while the other photo shows how it looks when you are close to it. Notice the cord. It is very stiff. I want it to go straight down from the plug so I don’t have a streak of white across my wall. I was able to get some of the kinks out farther down the cord but not as much as I hoped.
The toaster replaces a toaster oven that looked terrible beside my new breadbox (that orange thing in the pictures) because it is stainless. It had its own issues when it came to making toast. In fact I’ve never had a toaster or toaster oven that didn’t have its own peculiar way of doing its job. Just one toaster made perfectly browned toast on both sides, but when it popped up it threw the toast on the floor. I’ll stick with this new toaster instead of trying to find something better. I’ve given up all hope of ever finding a 5-star toaster.

Don’t let the bad reviews intimidate you—I was skeptical at first, but the fact that I couldn’t find ANY toaster with near-perfect ratings (from a reputable brand)—aside from those in the $100 range made me rethink my options; all I want is a toaster with basic functions that won’t break after a couple years. Since this toaster is not only reasonably priced, as well as consistently well-rated from tester sites for appliances, I decided to take a chance on it.
It is exactly what I’m looking for: a straightforward toaster with all the basic toaster functions (toast, bagel, defrost, reheat), and in a price range that makes sense for a small appliance that does one thing—toast bread. Additionally, it’s small, has an easily accessible crumb tray, is quiet, and the sides remain cool when toasting.
But the best feature is how FAST it toasts! I find it takes a minute, maybe a little more or less, depending the setting.
Its toast levels (1 – 5) give pretty distinct toast results from each level, and it toasts fairly evenly, if the pieces fit entirely into the slots—which are not long, but are just big enough to hold a bagel slice.
The settings aren’t as effective as I’d like, however; for example, I find the “Frozen” setting isn’t all that different from the “Toast” setting, since toasting frozen waffles using both settings yielded similar results. The “Bagel” setting also tends to toast both sides, but maybe it’s due to the fact I like to use the higher, level 4 setting.
In all, I find the positives outweigh the negatives, although I suppose it depends upon what you’re looking for. I was looking for a decent toaster for a decent price—and I found it!
UPDATE: After all the abuse I’ve subjected this toaster to, it’s still going strong! I am not the best at “maintaining” appliances (okay, cleaning out the tray) but it’s never given me problems. I’ve even crammed buns that are slightly too-big and specialty bread slices (think thick sweet slices of orange-cranberry toast, cheese, cinnamon) and again, zero issues in terms of getting stuck-on food inside. It’s been really quite reliable and I know once this thing gives in I’ll likely but another one.

Only one criticism. When toast is completed the toast does not rise up above the top of the toaster and I have to use two hands to hold the toaster down with my left hand and lift up the lever with my right hand.

Es algo voluminoso, pero para lo que es funciona perfecto.
Siempre he tenido algo de problema con el hecho de que en cualquier tostador siempre se llena por dentro de migajas. Pero este al menos tiene el plus de que por debajo hay una bandeja que uno puede quitar para limpiar las migajas que le caigan.
Tiene varias funciones, aunque en realidad solo lo usamos para tostar. Quisimos este porque precisamente estaba muy bien reseñado en The Wirecutter para tostar correctamente, y así ha sido hasta ahora.

We bought this to replace the same model Cuisinart toaster that lasted almost seven years until the mechanism that holds the lever down failed (probably due to misuse) and we could only use the toaster if we held the lever down as the bread toasted. We found that the bread toasted slightly more on one side (presumably because the bread wasn’t positioned exactly between the coils) but that wasn’t a serious problem. This one toasts more evenly, so they either improved manufacturing tolerances or we just got lucky with the particular toaster we got. I did notice that the lever pushes down more smoothly on this one than our old one, which gives a nicer feel when pushing the toast down.
The only other small complaint we had with our previous Cuisinart toaster is that crumbs don’t always drop through to the tray at the bottom, so bits of toast can get stuck and burn unless you invert and shake the toaster to work them loose. If you buy pre-sliced bread or white bread, this probably isn’t an issue. But if you bake fairly dry whole-grain bread that’s kind of “flakey,” it’s a bit of an inconvenience.
We considered many other toasters and would have been willing to spend more, but the more expensive ones often didn’t get good reviews for reliability and we read an article that said they use the same cooking coil and mechanism as this one, so we thought we’d just stick with what worked pretty well in the past. We considered a professional toaster, but they seemed to all be the kind that use a conveyer belt, which would be overkill for toasting two slices of bread at a time and take up too much counter space.

I’m pretty sure I went to the NYT Wirecutter to find a good toaster replacement. This is an affordable model and does the trick for what I need as a single person. It isn’t very “beefy” and I wonder how it would hold up to taking care of a large family…lots of plastic to this toaster.

This toaster has a solid build and feels well-made. It consistently produces nice, crisp toasts. However, I’ve noticed that the side of the bread facing the center tends to brown more than the other side. While both sides of the slice toast well, the browning isn’t perfectly even. Despite this, it still does a good job overall and I’m pleased with its performance.

En general bastante bien. Comprado en noviembre 2019 y en diciembre 2021 las resistencias de la parte centrales dejaron de funcionar (la típica rotura del cable-resistencia que no se puede arreglar sin un empalme metálico imposible de encontrar). Ahora calienta solo en los bordes y tenemos que darle la vuelta al pan para que se tueste de ambos lados.
El uso de malos materiales parece por desgracia ser la norma ahora, incluso en las tostadoras caras. Pero que funcione solo 2 años es realmente escandaloso (solo usamos un pinza de bambú para sacar el pan, sin maltrato especial).
