Super easy to put together; I like the electrical plug end protector and with basic maintenance I do not expect the electric plug to rust (its happened on other garden equipment before I used a makeshift protector). The unit itself isn’t flimsy yet it isn’t extremely sturdy (plastic parts don’t hold tightly and the weight is in the head) but it works. Unfortunately, it seems as though my wife isn’t able to use it fully extended as it is quite heavy for her whereby this unit is already lighter as it does not have the adjustable head angle (lacking manoeuverability) which I thought with the less weight might be better. Anyways, I put it through its paces to fill up a truck bed of cedar branches and it did well. Personally as I can muscle it, I was able to do all the desired cutting from a 14′ A ladder with the so saw pole extended all the way but I would have caution it might be difficult for some folks … Take many breaks 🙂

The first one of these I received appeared to be a return with the box end retaped and worn. That unit was broken in half but appeared to never have been used. Thank You Amazon for quickly shipping a replacement which arrived in great shape. The unit went together quickly with the chain already wrapped around the bar and instructions on which way is correct for installation. I added some bar oil and tried it on some 2 – 3 inch live oak branches. This thing is very sharp and cut very quickly – My first impression is this thing is well worth the price. Fully extended, it’s a little bulky to get up in position compared to a manual pole saw but the cut was so quick and easy, it’s not a problem. If I see different in future uses, I’ll update this review.
Update, August 2020 – Usage update – I periodically trim my Queen Palm tree with this and had a large Oak tree come down and lean against another tree. DIdn’t want to get too close with a regular chain saw so I used this. This saw amazes me with how sharp it is and how well it works. I cut two 8 inch limbs to allow the tree to fall and was able to stay out of harm’s way. From using and storing this saw, the number one recommendation is to always drain the bar oil before storing and store the saw with the blade guard on and facing down so any remaining bar oil doesn’t run down the handle. I’ve had to wipe the handle down a couple of times with Naptha to clean the oil off when stored the other way. Overall for the price this is an awesome saw. My other chainsaw is a Stihl MS250.

The quality of this saw is comparable to any other electric pole saw in it’s price range and higher. The reviews that talk about oil leaks, too small of an oil fill hole, and the chain always falling off obviously havnt owned a chain saw before. The oil has to come out somewhere, if it’s not leaking oil then the bar isn’t getting lubed and will cause the chain to seize and smoke then fail when the bar gets too hot and warps eventually shredding the chain guides. The oil fill hole is normal size for a pole saw, just pour in slow and when it get to the top wait for the bubbles to come up and continue to fill. If the chain keeps running off the bar than it’s too loose, it should be pretty tight at first then tightened after the first 5 minutes of use when it gets warm and stretches if it’s a new chain.
I recently owned and broke a ryobi pole saw about the size of this one. It lasted 3 seasons and it was heavily used by myself and 4 neighbors with many limbs cut down.
I was pleased with the instructional video on the site which helped in my initial assembly of this saw, it took about 5 mins to assemble after watching the video. The hex head bar bolt is very nice because it’s an internal wrenching bolt and less prone to stripping out like a 6 point bolt in most other saws.
From end to end it’s soundly and ergonomicly built. The motor housing is sturdy and the bar cover has a detent that locks it into place which will come in handy when it gets covered in bar oil. I’ve used it to trim apporimatly 30 limbs that range in size from 1/2″ up to 3″ and I have many more up to 6″ in diameter which I’m certain this saw can handle given performance thus far. The shaft has pretty decent securing tension rings, but being plastic if you go German “goodantight” torque on them you can easily strip them out, especially if you use a strap wrench or pipe wrench.
Pros: affordable, ergonomic, sturdy, good consumer reviews.
Cons: generic model not proprietary to sun joe
I found this exact model saw in the same color scheme and design at harbor freight for roughly the same price, and $69 on sale with a Memorial Day coupon. It had the Chicago electric stickers on it instead of the sun joe stickers. However, the only Negative aspect I can find in this saw may be a positive one; the fact that it’s sold to other vendors and re-labeled leads me to believe that replacement parts would be easy to find. The ryobi I replaced with this unit has a solid motor shaft and worm gear assembly which cannot be replaced without replacing the entire motor for $50. That same exact saw sells for $99 refurbished which also leads me to believe that the weak link in that saw is the motor assembly. With this saw I can buy brand new and if it ever breaks I’m only out the $80. If you take into consideration the cost of a new bar and chain (consumable parts) over the life of the saw it breaks down to nearly even assuming I get 3 seasons out of the sun joe.
Overall I am very pleased with this saw. If I had to do it all over I would consider purchasing the same saw from harbor freight (branded Chicago electric) and buy the 5 year warrenty for $19, IF I had the time to do so.
The free (2day) shipping and tax savings from amazon were the major factor in buying because I needed it quickly and didn’t have time to make the 2 hour round trip drive to harbor freight not to mention waiting around for Memorial Day weekend when I already had plans to be out of town.
I hope others find this review helpful.

I got this as I was tired of trying to balance on top of a ladder to trim the tops off a hedge made of firs and spruce. Was always in danger of the ladder sliding off as I stretched to reach tops with a pruning lopper. This worked great as I could position myself and cut the tops of the hedge 10ft in either direction. Has enough power to cut through thick tops and branches with ease. Can tire the arms after a while but that is to be expected when you put a weight on the end of a 10ft pole. Very happy I bought this.

Was disappointed when the package arrived as the item was badly damaged. Kudos to Amazon for a fast replacement….packaging needs to be improved for that type of shipping.
Used the replacement unit for the first time last weekend and it made short work of the pruning job. Easy to assemble, add oil and away you go.
I cut through a variety of branch sizes, from 1/2″ to 4″ and it worked great every time. Can be a bit “bouncy” on thinner branches until the cut starts. Used it for over an hour and did not have to add any more oil despite what other reviews said.
Did find it a bit hard to control at times when fully extended and the branch was cut through, the saw has a tendency to drop so you have to have a good grip.
Only real problem is that you want to keep cutting more branches…it’s so easy to use!!
Would recommend to home gardeners wanting to prune back their own trees.

I am very pleased with this product so far. I have held off on the fifth star until I have had it and used it for a year.
It came packaged excellently. The instructions were easy to follow and the assembly took me about 10 minutes as I was being very careful to put it together correctly.
I filled the oil reservoir and immediately went to taking down a small tree that had been struck by lightning and needed to come down. The Sun Joe worked like a dream and made quick work of the tree and branches.
I did not have any leakage issues as some buyers stated in the reviews. It does use up the oil pretty quickly. I had to refill the oil for my second project which was only after about 20 min of cutting. So keep an eye on the oil level.
I also had to tighten the chain after about 20 min. This is just a 2 second turn of the adjustment screw. So keep an eye on the chain tension as well.
I am glad I purchased a container of oil for this machine because none comes with it. You will also need a small funnel for filling the oil.
The extension bar is easy to use and loosens and tightens easily. The saw is moderately heavy to lift so some people might find this challenging to work with. The length of the blade is shorter than saws I have worked with in the past but it works perfectly for the limb work I need done around my yard.
It seems well built and for the price should be a great tool that will serve me for years to come.
