The Bestar Orion Murphy Bed assembly process was quite frustrating due to several design and documentation issues. The primary challenge was the numbering system for the pieces. Boards are simply numbered without distinction, leading to confusion as the same numbers are used across multiple components like the cabinets and desks. This lack of differentiation necessitated multiple reassemblies to ensure the correct placement of each part.
The set comprises three main items: a cabinet, a bed, and a desk. It would have been significantly easier if the numbering system had included letters (A, B, C) to clearly differentiate the components. This would have prevented the trial-and-error process we experienced and helped avoid the confusion with missing holes, which only became apparent once the wrong boards were in place.
Additionally, the manual was printed in black and white, which made it impossible to match the grey and white boards to their designated locations. There were also no indicators for top or bottom orientation, making it challenging to assemble the pieces correctly. Adding A, B, C to the numbering and including top/bottom stickers would streamline the installation process considerably.
The assembly took an exhausting three days, exacerbated by the cheap MDF material used. The boards lack mica on the sides, making them highly susceptible to water damage and spills. I was expecting a more durable material such as Basswood, Alder, or fine woods, but instead, received MDF which is prone to moisture-related issues, warping, cracking, and decay.
In summary, the Murphy Bed’s assembly design needs significant improvements to enhance ease of use and durability. Better numbering, clearer instructions, and higher-quality materials would greatly improve the overall experience.
