This tool did a great job in cutting thick cable insulation – be careful though, its EXTREMELY sharp! Also comes in handy cutting anything a razor knife could cut. Very study and comfortable in your hand. Great tool!

This knife is a must for electricians. I cannot think of a flaw. But there is one tiny annoyance. The screw that holds the blade in will get loose, not loose enough for the blade to fall out but enough to annoy you. It will probably never fall out, because the housing keeps it in place. You can use Loctite if you want. I left my knife in a porta potty, and someone snagged it. 🙁 I had to buy another.

I recently got my hands on the Klein Tools 44219 Replacement Hawkbill Blades, and I have to say, they live up to the Klein reputation. These blades come in a convenient 3-pack, which is great because I always like having spares on hand.
First off, the blades are incredibly sharp straight out of the pack. They slice through materials like a hot knife through butter. I’ve used them on various tasks, from cutting through thick rope to stripping wires, and they handle everything effortlessly. The curved hawkbill design is particularly useful for making clean, controlled cuts, especially in tight spaces.
The durability is also impressive. Even after heavy use, the blades maintain their sharpness quite well. I haven’t had to replace a blade yet, which is a testament to their longevity. Plus, swapping out the blades on my 44218 knife is a breeze – it’s a simple and quick process, which is a big plus when you’re on the job and need to make a fast change.
One thing I really appreciate is the build quality. The blades feel sturdy and well-made, which gives me confidence that they won’t snap or dull easily. They’re a bit pricier than some other replacement blades out there, but in my opinion, the performance and reliability are worth the extra cost.
In summary, if you’re looking for replacement blades that are sharp, durable, and easy to swap, the Klein Tools 44219 Hawkbill Blades are a solid choice. They’ve definitely earned a permanent spot in my toolkit.

This blade is very sharp and doesn’t break from sideways pressure. It’s also sharpenable with the Klein sharpener.

The design is the same as if it were a folding linoleum / carpet knife for floorcoverings installers.
Very sharp and yet the blade is knife-strong, not like a razor bade box cutter type thin blade. The overall build is strong also, no blade wobble, and plastic hand grips have a good feel.
I’m not a knife nerd, so I have not mastered the “one-hand open and close”, but my friend can do it, although he says the newness means it is very dangerous, still being so tight to move.
I used to work in electrical wholesale, and I definitely would stock these in my store.
Not sure what country this is from, but don’t let that stop you. Whichever factory is turning these out is doing a reputable job of it.

I ended up using my Klein knife more than expected. Sharpening the curved blade was more than I wanted to tackle, but removing all the star shaped screws seemed daunting. Much to my surprise, the only screw needed to replace the blade is the flathead. Mystery solved.

UPDATE: Well, this knife was great for cutting sod. However, it dulled almost immediately. I was hoping to get at least 3 or 4 uses out of it, but one use of several cuts was all the blade could take. I know that cutting sod is not what the knife is designed for, so you can take that comment or leave it. I will have to find another tool for cutting sod.
Original review: I wonder if South Florida is the only place where you use sod instead of grass seed? When installing a square of sod (grass growing out of a chunk of dirt), you may have to fit it around a curved area, or fit it into a spot of bare ground. I bought this curved “hawk bill” knife to cut either the grass that is already growing, so I can put in a full square of sod; or to cut the piece of sod to fit my space. I’m not doing a complete lawn; I’m just patching the brown or bare spots. I am using the knife to cut straight down through the grass and the roots, and then use a spade or shovel to remove what is not wanted. So far, this knife has done the job. It is strong enough and sharp enough. It opened and closed a little stiffly the first couple of times, but then it seemed to get better. I always wear thick leather gloves when doing yard work, so I close this knife with gloves on. You have to endanger yourself to close it–you have to squeeze the bottom of the knife handle to release the lock on the blade. But the blade doesn’t snap back, and you can hold the blade with your other hand to guide it when closing the knife. Using a handheld knife instead of a power tool gives me more control of what I’m doing. I just have to remember to keep my feet out of the direction of my cuts. I looked at a LOT of knives and read all the reviews. This seemed to be the best answer to my needs.
