Tough, tough, tough cordless drill and driver set. I burned out my Makita cordless drill because it did not have over-heating protection circuit. Switched to Milwaukee brand for a few reasons: 1) One of the earliest to bring out full line of 18v lithium battery tools 2) Reputation for quality 3) Wide selection of tools in the 18v line 4) The batteries maintain the same tool interface over the years.

I have now used these cordless tools for a few years and they are still going strong and the batteries last LONG time. Milwaukee keeps upgrading the capacity of the battery pack (now 5.0 AH or more?) while keeping to the same format and interface so no need to buy new tools to get more capacity. Over these years I have used it to repair a large deck with screws, used on light construction job site for lots of screw and large nut driving, plus all my home projects. Yes, on the job this got dropped on concrete floor several times with nothing broken and no problems. And I ran the drill a long time after it got hot but it never got too hot. The charger is pretty fast, too. It recharges a battery in about the same time it takes to use another one up driving deck screws. On the job I went about three days between swapping batteries (4.0AH) doing light driving and drilling in sheet metal. These babies have TORQUE. I can’t remember them every getting bogged down, but you have to be careful to limit the toque setting on smaller screws or when driving into particle board to prevent break/stripping.

I normally like DeWalt tools (miter saw, table saw, etc), but DeWalt keeps changing their battery format and interface, and they were YEARS late to offering lithium batteries. On the job site the deWalt drills and drivers seemed to perform well, but my Milwaukee M18 was the envy of everyone for its total toughness and long lasting batteries even when it was a few years old already. You would have to pay several times more to get anything better such as Hilti. At home almost any brand is fine for the light use most guys put their cordless tools through. But if you do heavy weight drill/driving projects at home or use them for your job, then I would not go with anything less than Milwaukee M18. They have been fantastic work horses for several years now at home and the job sites.

These were the first tools I bought as part of my begrudging conversion to the religion of Milwaukee. I’ve since bought much more and am never looking back.

The impact driver is tougher than any other I’ve owned or used (including Makita, a couple different DeWalts, Hitachi, Bosch […seriously, who thought that was a good idea?], a much older Milwaukee, Craftsman…you get the idea). The wide range of gear and speed selections is helpful and the variable speed trigger is surprisingly precise (I don’t know if that aspect of the trigger will last, but for several months it’s been wonderful). To be honest, I have a hard time finding excuses to use the highest gear at the maximum speed. It is extreme.

The hammer drill I use less often but when I need it, it doesn’t let me down. It will eat through a thick slab of cement like a thin strip of bacon (provided you use a good quality drill bit). I also sometimes use it as a driver when my team needs all hands on deck (so somebody else is using the impact) – it can serve this purpose at the lowest settings, but be gentle, because it’s like asking Andre the Giant to wash your tiny porcelain dollhouse teacups. When performing extreme tasks, it can get very hot, but a brush motor would get even hotter sooner and then just fail whereas this one toughs it out to the finish (just wear thick gloves because your hands will burn out before this motor does).

The combination of the brushless motor (more efficient power transfer) and the 4AH XC battery keeps going forever. I can use these all day, forget to charge them, and still have enough left the next day. When I do remember to charge them, it happens fast (as advertised).

These aren’t cheap but they’re worth every penny and more.

These are the best drills on the market!
The last forever on a single battery settings give excellent results for torque. Very powerful.

My only complaint is the forward/reverse switch is exceptionally hair triggered, the slightest brush against them shuts the drill off. A total pain, it happens multiple times a day, usually at the most inopportune times.
Notified Milwaukee, they said take it in for service, but it is a design flaw, a new type of switch would be required.

I was looking for a good professional quality cordless drill that would last a while. I’m a big “made in America” fan but I couldn’t find a cordless drill made in America (100%), so I looked for the best one out there. I watched a number of you tube video comparisons and read a lot of reviews. The guys at work use Dewalt and Milwaukee nut drivers. Both get the job done, but the guys using them say the Milwaukee has a lot more power than the Dewalt. I finally chose this Milwaukee 1/2 inch drive drill and 1/4 nut driver combo. The drill is every bit as powerful as a corded 1/2 inch drill. I built a seesaw for my kids, which involved drilling holes and screwing a tub of deck screws and I didn’t even drain half of one battery. I thought I would test the nut driver, so I got a half inch socket adapter and it was easily able to take the lug nuts off my car wheels and put them back on. The case for these is even high quality and durable. If you plan to expand your cordless tools Milwaukee has a huge line of tools you can use with these batteries. The other smaller detail I like about this set is the LED light. Some drills have a little dot for the light to shine through, these have a half moon shaped LED light, so it provides a lot of light on your work area. Great drill and driver set.

The drill and driver are amazing but you do need to have impact quality bits as the regular ones can be stripped in short order.
