I use my first set of these this evening. I taught my son how to strip the wire to the proper length and make the dual connections. They held tight and it was a great teaching and learning opportunity. This product got terrifically high ratings online in a comparison of similar brands for their connectivity, amperage load and safety. Certainly happy to have this terrific product!

I had been reading reviews on some wire connectors that popped up in my feeds and the general recommendation was to stick with the original Wago 221 lever-nut connectors. I happened to have a wiring project at hand and bought this small “sampler” box to try them. OMG! These things are brilliant! They easily accommodate a variety of wire gauges and are easy to use and install. I think they take less time to prepare and install than traditional twisted wire nut bundles. Best of all, in an electrical box that is both a junction and contains switches or receptacles, these things are incredible at saving space, especially if you are also trying to include bulky items like dimmers or home automation smart switches/outlets. Your ground wires and neutrals can be connected and grouped neatly together in an easy-to-trace row of flat connections and pressed out of the way to the back of the box instead of the giant wad of twisted wires finished with a huge wire nut (and sometimes electrical tape) that tend to consume a huge chunk of the valuable “real estate” inside the electrical box and often requires you to “squeeze” the switch/outlet into the tight remaining space. These clever lie-flat lever-nuts leave plenty of room for the switches or outlets. Connections are quick and easy and almost flawless every time. You barely have to strip any insulation off the end of a wire for connection. In this case, it is almost “less is more.” I have been frustrated many times by a wire losing contact in that twist under a wire nut – or a short when a wire is inadvertently contacted/pierced as the switch/outlet is screwed in place. Often the wire shorts are difficult to trace and identify, and a pain unpacking and unbundling and re-twisting the wires together (or mending an inadvertent piercing of the wire insulation. Not a problem with these ingenious connectors. The assortment comes with 2, 3, and 5 wire connectors. I thought I might need to connect more than 5 wires, but that did not prove to be the case. If it were necessary, two connectors could be easily “daisy-chained.” I encountered a couple of 4 wire connections that “wasted” one of the “slots” of the 5 connector lever-nuts, and I momentarily wished there was a 4 wire connector – but apparently, that doesn’t exist. While I kind of hated “wasting” the extra wire “slot,” I didn’t lose any sleep over it. I liked these 221 series Wago lever-nuts so much after trying them out on the current wiring project, I have since purchased a larger assortment pack as I don’t want to ever run out because I don’t plan on using traditional wire nuts ever again! And I don’t want to if I can avoid it! Thank you Wago for a great product, and these assortment packs are a great way to get started using them. While I haven’t looked, I presume I can purchase bulk packs of a single-size connector like you can with traditional wire nuts if I find I am using a lot of one size. But, that is a “problem” for another day…

As a General Contractor, I often have clients that are undecided when it comes to lights and switch placements. It used to be a real hassle because designing on the fly when under a tight schedule can be very time consuming. Its similar to the proverbial moving company stories: “Move the couch over here. Hmm…No, lets try over here…that doesn’t work, lets move it back to where it was.” Meanwhile, I am working with clients as well as subcontractors so it is important to know where the placements for the design will be.

Wago wire levers changed the game. It allows me to quickly change fixtures, switches and placement without the hassle of wire nuts or push splices. Change your mind? No problem…When everything is settled, I can remove the hardware and put the wire back so the subs can move forward with client confidence. To me, thats worth the extra cost for these.

The 5 wire splice is perfect for splicing ground wires together and takes hardly any time or effort to shove everything back in to the box. If you are bound to smaller boxes due to age or design, these are the only UL listed solution that can make it happen when the box cannot be replaced. Ever try to wire a dimmer switch into a box from the ’60’s? Its almost impossible.

I will caution you to always double check:

    * Each wire that is inserted must be inserted all the way so you can see the end through the other side of the lever splice. If you cannot, you must open the lever, check your wire length and try again.
    * Fully depress the lever down so you feel it click past the indent which keeps it in place. Sometimes the lever looks fully depressed but it is actually not.
    * After pushing wires back into a box, double check that there are no levers that have lifted. This happens quite often and is not the fault of the design. The force of solid copper wires can be enough to rub against the levers and pop one or two open when pushing them in. It has happened to me frequently. If I know a project is complete and signed off, I will usually wrap the lever nuts once with 3M electrical tape. This ensures the levers will not pop open … ever.

When I think about the time I spend fitting fixtures for clients using other products, it easily adds up well beyond the extra cost of lever splices. Knowing a light fixture has to come back down for paint is no longer an “ugnnn” moment.

If you know you are wiring something and it will likely never need to come back out again, I would actually advise using push/plug style splicers. They are just as fast but a chore to come back out (which is the point) They cost much less than the lever nuts so its a win win. Otherwise, the lever nuts are an amazing invention and will likely be here to stay.

You can use them for car stereo wiring, home electrical and more. They even allow a mix of different wire types used together such as 18ga stranded with 16ga solid. Gotta love that.

Maybe I’m just cheap, and that’s why I say it’s an ok value for money, Wire nuts would be quite a bit cheaper, but you also have a MUCH greater chance of the wires coming free than with these. This is my first time using wago connectors, and I’m glad I did, and plan on using them more often.

Though they can and do cost more, they lock on better.

They save a lot of space when putting more than one receptacle or switch into one box.
