While I’m not deducting any stars from this review (I do love the pen), I do want to update this review for questionable selling ethics. I bought directly from Amazon vs. a third party reseller because I thought I could trust Amazon. Nowhere did it state that the pen was a gray market item. I was not able to register the pen with Montblanc, they informed me that Amazon.com is not an authorized reseller. They informed that the pen could even be a fake or gray market item. I did contact Amazon though and was informed that the pen is authentic, but I had no warranty and could return it within 30 days of purchase if I’d like, suggestive of a gray market product. I’m in a bit of a dilemma as I really do like the pen and I believe it to be authentic but the non-disclosure left a bad taste.

I’ll start off by saying I am a fountain pen enthusiast. I bought this pen to add a little variety to my collection. I ordered directly from Amazon, the first one came with scratches, the replacement is perfect. I’ve had rollerball pens in the past and didn’t care for them as even the best tends to skip on occasions. I am really enjoying this MB Fineliner so far. I am using it on Clairefontaine paper and it is a very smooth writer. The ink that is laid down is rich dark black. The fit and finish is superb. This pen is nothing like a fountain pen. Some reviewers talk about the ‘springy’ nib. It is springy in the sense that it springs back into the cartridge, it does not flex like a flexible nib on a fountain pen. I think this spring action is more for priming a dry nib with ink when the pen has been sitting around unused and to prevent heavy handed writers from splintering the fiber nib. The ink was thinly laid down when I first got the pen, but after a couple of sentences of writing, the ink began to flow wonderfully. I really can’t say enough good things about this pen, really love it.

Let me start by saying I am not a Mont Blanc expert-and was skeptical of the authenticity of this product before purchasing, as many consumers naturally should be. With that being said, I am extremely pleased with this pen-the overall design and floating star emblem (in clear glass) have really grown on me. There is a small serial number near the top of the cap by the Mont Blanc name, the resin body is glossy and shines with a slight red hue under direct light (which it should), includes the proper booklet and box with the proper finish (almost leather like cover) and the interior of the pen has impeccable high-quality components-which all lends me to believe that this is indeed authentic. Overall, the pen writes flawlessly, is well balanced, extremely high quality, and would make a great gift for someone else…or even a great gift for yourself.

Whenever you buy a MontBlanc anywhere that is not a MB boutique, you need to be rigorous about your authentication. I’ve learned this over the past few years and thankfully have family that live close enough to a boutique that I can visit a few times a year. The pen passed all of my preliminary tests – the pen is serialized in the proper place and this number returned 0 hits when searched. The resin shines a dull red under intense light, and the included cartridge was a genuine Montblanc Mystery Black fineliner refill in bold. Many people giving 1 star are citing the “Made in Germany” stamp under the clip rather than “Pix” and a registered trademark symbol. However, it is worth noting that the authentic version of this pen DOES say “Made in Germany”. This has been detailed on many reviews and in YouTube videos demoing the pen (look them up for yourself), and I have now seen it first-hand in person at a boutique.
Other things to look for: the metal used in the body, grip, and clip are a dark, shiny gunmetal. There are two rings in the top section which should have more of a bead-blasted look, but share the same dark grey coloring. If your metal looks shiny, like silver or zinc or chrome, it’s a fake. Finally, some fakes I have seen have improper proportions on the floating star in the cap.
Always be wary that you may be getting a fake, but please know what to look for first. Look up the reviews, look for videos, look for comparisons between real and fake versions. These pens have been around for long enough (and is expensive enough) that there’s no excuse not to.
Now, onto the actual review. This is my third MontBlanc and my first non-fountain pen (my others are a 145 and 146), and for writing every day for long sessions, I think I like this more than my previous all-time favorite, the 145. The weight is perfect, the grip size is perfect, the knurling on the grip is so pleasant to hold. The versatility of rollerball vs. fineliner is great, and MontBlanc has something like 18 possible refills that work in these pens. I’m very happy with it.

The Montblanc Starwalker is iconic and instantly recognizable. People will spot it right away and this version, with black chrome trim, will look great in your pocket.
However, it is also a great writing pen. You can choose from a felt tip fineliner with a unique spring loaded tip or a fluid medium or fine point rollerball. I am a bit of a pen fanatic, and I guess I’ve tried about every rollerball on the market. My Montbanc fine point rollerball is the cleanest best writing I have ever used. It is pricey but worth it to me because it writes so well.
If you want a classic pen that looks good on you, will be noticed, and is a comfortable superb writer – well, this is your pen. Splurge.

Montblanc Schreibgeräte sind eine Frage der persönlichen Philosophie. Entweder man hält sie für verschwenderischen Luxus oder für ein Stück Luxus im Alltag für die Lebenszeit. Voraussetzung für “Lebesnzeit” ist natürlich, dass man nicht ein chronischer Verlierer von Schreibgeräten ist. Das Schreibverhalten bei Rollerballs ist nicht viel besser als bei billigeren Produkten – anders als bei Füllhaltern. Letztlich kommt es auf die Gedanken an, die man damit zu Papier bringt. Mir macht es eine Menge Spass, mit einem Montblanc zu schreiben. An meinem Starwalker Füllhalter erfreue ich mich seit über 10 Jahren unvermindert, das war eine gute Investition. Für manche Aufgaben ist der Füllhalter nicht schnell genug, z.B. beim Protokollieren. Der Ladenpreis eines entsprechenden Rollerballs aus der Starwalker-Serie war mir dann aber doch zu hoch. Der Preis, den dieser Händler bietet, hat dann meinen Widerstand gebrochen. Es blieb aber zunächst der Zweifel, ob das Produkt authentisch ist. Wäre der Preis sehr viel geringer müßte man darüber nicht nachdenken. Die Lieferung hat meine Zweifel beseitigt. Die Gravuren sind richtig, die Gravur in der Innenseite des Clips ist korrekt. Es wurde ein authentisches Produkt geliefert, ein Schnäppchen zu dem Preis.
