 I bought this machine mainly for convenience.
While I’m sure you could get better results out of a Breville Dual Boiler with some work, this is the machine you get if you want to put in beans, hit a few buttons and get decent espresso without a lot of effort. In particular, I bought this as an upgrade from a Nespresso Inissia because the coffees that I liked kept disappearing to the point that my favorite shots from that were from Illy pods. Given that Nespresso pods aren’t exactly cheap, nor easy to recycle, and are more difficult to obtain in the middle of a pandemic, I decided it was time for something different.
I did a bit of research on superautomatic machines and it came down to the Saeco Xsmall (Gaggia Besana) and the Philips (Saeco) EP1220. Part of the reason it came down to these two is because they use the same brew group that you see on much higher-end machines, so they are distinguished by features, not quality. At the time, they were also priced really close, but it looks like the price of the former has dropped a bit. For me, the main trade-offs between those two are that you can’t adjust the coffee in a shot in the lower-end one, and there’s no bypass door for one-off coffee. That was worth it to me to upgrade, but I think the Xsmall would do a perfectly fine job pulling smaller shots.
After the EP1220 showed up, setting it up was straightforward, even if the (not included, per the manual) water filter is a little bit fussy to install. As others have pointed out, the machine does need to do some calibration to dial in the grind settings, so the first cups were not all that great. I think about 10-15 in was when it started being really good.
I think it works about as advertised, which is that it pulls consistent shots from beans without a lot of work. I set mine to a grind level of fourth smallest (per the manual’s instructions) and use less water and more beans (“aroma”) in the settings. Freshly roasted beans produce more crema than older beans, and you get plenty of the character of the coffee extracted into the cup, with no real surprises. I’ve found that Espresso Vivace’s Dolce beans work well for me, but I’m sure there are plenty of others.
Really the only problem I’ve had is that I’ve been drinking more coffee than I should because it’s so much more tasty than what I had. This is a good problem to have, and hopefully the machine doesn’t run into any problems anytime soon.

Llevo un par de meses con esta cafetera y hasta ahora todo bien. Consistente, fácil de usar, y el café sale bien. Tal vez se mejore si se ajusta el molino al gusto de cada quien, pero no me molesté en hacerlo, pues salieron bien los cafés desde que se sacó de la caja.
HabÃa leÃdo unos comentarios que decÃan que viene usada, pero en mi unidad no noté signos de ello; de hecho trae un aviso de que todas las máquinas han sido probadas con café… tal vez sea eso.
La recomiendo, especialmente si la encuentras de oferta.

Es muy fácil de usar, tanto para espresso, americano o capuchino. Lo único es probar las diferentes variaciones que tiene de tamaño de taza y cantidad de café para ver que combinación es mejor para el café que se usa y el tipo de bebida que se quiere.
Lo puede usar cualquier persona sin mucha dificultad, además de que lo compré con una buena promoción por lo que fue un excelente adquisición.

Agarre esta máquina en promoción y creo que fue una buena opción. Al principio vi videos que recomiendan poner el nivel de molido en el más fino y ajustar la temperatura. Recomiendo checar videos de cómo hacerlo en Internet porque sà ayuda mucho al sabor. De ahà en adelante, siento que es fácil de usar y de limpiar. Lo único molesto que veo es que luego tengo que ajustar el tanque de agua porque detecta que no lo tiene. También es molesto que, aunque el tanque tenga la mitad de agua, a veces te pide que lo llenes más y entonces realmente siempre debes mantenerlo arriba de la mitad. De ahi en fuera siento que es una máquina buena y más si la compras en promoción.

Tuve una cafetera Saeco que duró muchos y felices años; ahora que tocaba renovarla, me enteré de que la marca fue adquirida por Philips asà que busqué la marca. No me decepcionó, es el mismo sistema con muchas mejoras, un precio justo y lo más importante: Un mejor café.
Lo único que no me gustó tanto es la ceremonia de apretar varios botones (en los modelos anteriores sólo oprimÃas el de Inicio y ¡listo!). Aquà hay más pasos pero bueno… te aprendes rápido la secuencia.
Pedà la más sencilla porque no me gusta la leche y no tomo capuchinos, asà que esta sólo viene con un espumador sencillo; sin embargo, tuve visitas y espumé un par. El resultado fue excelente. Estoy contento con mi compra.

This is a great machine for easy lattes and coffee. I bought this machine with the hopes to make lattes, and it has exceeded my expectation. The grinder is really solid and makes a very good tasting espresso. It was easy to set up using the videos from Philips. I was pleased it fits under my upper cabinets with room to place a milk pitcher or cup on top of the machine. It’s very convenient that the water carafe is accessed through the front of the machine (not the top). The machine is not too loud either. I was concerned about waking up family in the morning but it hasn’t seemed to disturb anyone. The settings are very easy to adjust and it notifies you when it’s out of water. I have had issues with the milk frother. It’s a bit of a defect on the manufacturing. If the silver part of the frother is pushed on too tightly it will block the small air hole. It has to be loosely attached for it to get good airflow for the milk. I thought I had a defective machine, but then after messing around with it I figured out the problem. Be sure to rinse the milk frother after every use to prevent milk blockage (I also run hot water through after using the steam wand to make sure it is clear). It’s very easy to clean out the water tray and old grounds. I will add you must have the machine on when you dump the grounds or the machine will not recognize you’ve emptied it. It is recommended to rinse the inside of the machine weekly. The first time I did it I had some issue getting it back together, but I think with time it will get easier. I would 100% recommend this machine to anyone wanting an easy latte or coffee at home. I’ve found that it tastes better than going to a cafe as I can make it according to my liking. There are many videos on YouTube to help with milk frothing and making specialty drinks.

Came back to purchase another for the office so here’s a review from a longtime owner of four years. I love this machine. I have owned a couple other super autos, this is a workhorse with no issues. We drink 5-6 americanos a day, weekends sometimes more. I love the ease of being able to clean this machine, by removing all the components. I have had other machines that are temperamental or they work well but slowly fade. This is still making a consistent cup of excellent coffee. It makes Sbucks look unappealing, in fact I am disappointed at cafes now and miss my machine when I travel. Phillips bought out Saeco so that’s the quality machine you’re getting but Phillips has made it affordable.
