I’ve been keeping tropical fish for over 50 years, and I know quality when I see it. In point of fact I’ve always been more of an Eheim man, until a friend told me about the Fx6. My complaint with Eheim was the fact that it can be a pain to prime, and I didn’t want to go through that again, so I took the plunge and bought the Fx6 for my newly setup 125 gallon tank.
When the package arrived I was shocked at the size of this thing. It reminded me of a canister vacuum cleaner. After a quick unboxing, and cursory accounting of parts, I began the process of assembling the filter at 5:15 PM. At 5:45 PM, I turned it on, watched it cycle, and then settle down to a almost silent hum. I didn’t have to do anything but watch. It did it all. No sucking on the intake to get it to prime, no water splashing everywhere because you couldn’t get the hose on fast enough, and no fuss at all. How nice is that?
The outtake, while very strong, was easily adjustable, so the stream pointed upward, and away from the middle of the tank. You cannot hear one little drop of splashing water. I will be keeping Discus and they don’t like hurricane water.
Like most new tanks mine was quite cloudy, and had been for a couple of days before I started the filter. Overnight the cloudiness completely disappeared and the water is almost crystal clear.
Bottom line: while expensive it’s one of those “you get what you pay for” situations and I consider this easy to assemble, simple to start, highly efficient filter getting what I paid for. I recommend it most heartily for the reasons I have mentioned. Incredibly easy to assemble and starting is a matter of plugging it in. Very quiet and by all appearances very, very efficient. If you have one of these there is no need whatsoever to use an additional filter on a large-100-200 gallon tank. This big boy will take care of everything for you.

I purchased this filter for a 55 gallon aquarium with goldfish due to the large bio load. Thinking Iโd save some time, I watched someoneโs YouTube video for set up Instead of reading the
The filter worked extremely well for about 6 months when it started making a lot of noise Then it began overheating periodically and finally just stopped working altogether.
After lot of thought and research, I decided to purchase a second one. While setting it up, I wanted to double check something with the tubing. Iโm so glad I did! It clearly states that the tubing should have no loops or slack as it overworks the motor. Well, my first one had quite a bit of slack with both the intake output tubing. That was completely my fault!
Here are a few tips that may help you from my experience:
1. Make sure the metal clamp is very secure on the white part of the tubing closest to the open/shut valves.
2. When securing tubing to the aquarium, there are three clips with the bracket. Do the middle clip first, then the back one and lastly the one inside the aquarium.
3. The red open/shut valves are super challenging to turn and they donโt loosen with time. Iโm sure this is a good safety feature, but I actually cut my finger trying to close them. I recommend using a towel or something to protect your hand.
4. Make sure you have fully tightened the white tops of the screws holding the lid on. If you donโt, even one loose one will cause water to pour out.
5. Make sure thereโs no slack in the tubing! Donโt repeat my mistake and burn out your motor!
The videos are quite helpful, but definitely read the instructions! Second filter is doing very well!

We have had hang on backs for ever..this is a game changer. Yes it is pricey but in my opinion it is worth it. We are using this for our 75 gallon and its amazing. We have it on the bottom shelf of a stand and had to put Styrofoam under it so that it didn’t rattle but that was an easy fix. Now it is whisper quiet and wonderful. Our tank looks beautiful and clear and looks much less cluttered then with the hang on back filters and their many wires and bulkiness. It was somewhat simple to set up as long as you take the time to read the instructions carefully.

I’ve had this since end of Aug 2024 and I’m super impressed. I actually got this for a 235L Tank, it’s more than enough for it and does the job. I did have a look at the FX4 but didn’t see the point of it given the size of the tank. I have an aqua sys 235 with the cabinet and this has enough space to fit under it. I would highly recommend Fluval products. I love the fact the flow of the output can be controlled, the build of it is amazing and just generally the support you get from Fluval (mine came from the seller Aquacadabra but dispatched by them), I have used Aquacadabra before and super impressed with them too
