The best bird feeder I’ve ever come across – it’s well made and looks great in the garden. I fill the top half with a regular seed mix and the bottom with Niger seeds and we get a fantastic variety of birds visit our garden to feed from it, including two families of Goldfinches that love the Niger seeds.
I’ve attached a regular bird feeding mesh tray to the perch-ring at the bottom of the feeder (using three home-made wire rope hoops) to catch the seeds in (the birds seem to love flicking them out and they then take root and grow really quickly in the gravel border!).
It’s really easy to fill too but, because the wire rope that it hangs from passes all the way through the feeder (and can’t be removed), it can be a bit awkward to clean but it works so well and looks so good that I don’t mind that.

I had a cheap bird feeder here and decided to put it up to see what would happen. A lot of birds came and tried to use it, but few were able to as designed. Most would periodically give it a hard knock, it would start swinging and spill its contents on my patio floor. I would then have birds and squirrels, side by side, feeding off my floor. Apparently the squirrels here are happy to share. The mess was unbelievable, but clearly there was interest.

This feeder is much bigger, but not so big that smaller birds can’t use it. It’s just the right size for cardinals to use without problems. It’s also much heavier and would not spill its contents regardless how hard a knock it gets. I still have a mess on my patio floor, but this time it’s caused by birds throwing food out on the floor (either bluejays are picky eaters, or they like feeding the squirrels). It’s quite the hit here, in just the one week I’ve had it, it has yet to be invaded by squirrels, it has kept its contents mostly dry when it’s raining, and has become a favourite feeding place for two pairs of cardinals, dozens of bluejays, and droves and droves of finches. It’s not very often I look out my window and find the feeder unattended by birds, and during the mornings and afternoons I would find it completely occupied – both perches, all the way around.

The birds like it. I have yet to try to clean it and I have yet to figure out how to open the lower compartment. I know there is a way, it’s just not obvious to me how.

EDIT: Well, that was bound to happen. It took a while, but a squirrel figured out a way to steal from my feeder. Just a single one so far, but it repeatedly attacks it, and successfully. I have to hand it to this critter, watching it do it is an entertainment in itself: jumping one whole meter straight up onto a shaky clothesline, then tightrope walking, then a death-defying jump, then rappelling down… and after robbing it, a 3m free-fall to the ground. I have the James Bond of squirrels here. Bottom line is, it is not as squirrel-proof as claimed.

It’s a beautiful feeder, easy to fill, seems to be built well, but many of the birds in our area just don’t seem to like it for some reason.

The perches are a bit small for larger birds like Cardinals and smaller birds seem to get frustrated with it for some reason, even after I’ve tried a couple of different mixes. Might work better in different regions.

We’ve been experiencing snow and ice lately, so plenty of hungry birds visiting, yet this feeder still sitting basically full. Can’t quite figure it out. Haven’t given up on it yet, but birds in our area just are not digging it.

    EDIT 03/12/2018
I wanted to provide an update after using this feeder for a few months. Birds did start to take to it after several weeks so that is no longer an issue.

The only reason I did not bump my review to 5 stars is that I have had 2 instances where rain/moisture made its way into the center filling tube that leads to the bottom. Gummed it all up and started to mold where I ultimately had to take the entire unit apart, dig out the wet seed, and give it a good cleaning by hand.

It is worth noting, that unlike some other commenters have posted, you actually can fully disassemble and reassemble this feeder quite easily once you see how it is put together (get tabs in right slots, turn the correct direction to lock the pieces back together). This is actually nice, as I used to have a much more expensive Finch feeder and once it got gummed up and filthy I eventually just had to throw that one away in the garbage. I am hoping with an occasional cleaning, this feeder will last much longer.

I purchased this feeder back in the beginning of July. I was SO excited to get it because we have SO many birds come to eat that my 10 other feeders weren’t feeding them all. I can’t even begin to tell you all the birds we get, bu there are ots of varieties and many of each.

I got this feeder, filled it immediately, and hung it up.It took 2-3 days before the birds would actually perch and feed, but they took to it nicely and now it’s their favorite feeder … I have a huge back yard with a GIANT tree with lots of limbs to hang feeders from.
2 days later when it was empty, I went to get the feeder to refill it. I tripped on my dogs foot and the feeder fell out of my hand and broke into quite a few pieces. I was SOOOO mad!! I picked up all the pieces and took it back to my patio and got my glue out. I was not tossing this feeder after 3 days of use.
I glued the pieces together and let it sit for a few days to make sure it was strong enough to fill and hang, and would hold up to the birds being on it. I filled it and hung it up and it hasn’t even thought of breaking. Yes, it looks kind of yukky due to the crack in the bottom plastic tube, but hey – birds don’ care what it looks like and it’s not like it’s in my front yard, so who cares!
The birds LOVE this feeder. I love this feeder. It does empty completely in a 8-12 hour period, but it’s not a big deal to me.
Super easy to fill…I use a big tall plastic cup I got from Sonic and fill until full…you do NOT need to take it apart to fill unless you want 2 different kinds of food, which I don’t do as all my birds get the same bird food and love it

Since it broke and I had to glue it, I can’t easily take it apart to clean as I would have been able to do, but it cleans out just fine with a hose and a toothbrush. So all in all, it holds a TON of food, and you can put ALL kinds of different food in it, it hangs nicely, birds can sit and eat just fine and I can still clean it easily.
    For $20 – you can’t beat it!

I was looking for a bird feeder that would easily dispense sunflower seeds. I don’t use any other seed. The last feeder I tried advertised that it was designed for “any seed” but clogged up with an exclusive sunflower mix. I received this yesterday. An overnight delivery. We have house sitters coming in a couple of days and I needed a feeder that I was confident worked before we left. Received this on time yesterday, well packed, no damage, and the birds took to it immediately. In the same amount of length as my broken 6 port feeder, I have seen as many as 8 birds feeding together. If you watch the very helpful video in the top review of this feeder, you will see how it works. The video does not show a complete breakdown of the item. The two cylinders twist completely apart from all the metal and will be very easy to clean. That being said, the wire runs the total length of the feeder, so when you take everything apart, they are still strung together on the wire which makes it a bit awkward to clean. However, this design seems like it would secure all the pieces together better than if the wire was only attached to the top cylinder like many feeders. I read several reviews that said the wire crimping did not hold, so my husband added a couple of extra crimps to the top and bottom terminals of the wire before I filled it the first time. One last thing: in the video, the owner filled the bottom half first before putting it together then filled the top half with another kind of seed. That looked a little awkward, having to put both halves together when one half was already full. Since I am only using one seed in my feeder, I put the halves together first and filled both halves from the top. It is not a huge tube going down the middle of the top feeder, but the bottom filled faster than I expected. In my lifetime experience with many types of bird feeders, I think this one will be a favorite!
