First of all there was no screw-on top and the top piece has no threads so any screw-on top won’t work. It is made of plastic, not metal as shown in the photos, so a squirrel can chew in through the top, even if they shipped a cover to the filling hole.
Additionally there are holes where the top attaches to the metal frame. This will let water in if it rains.
The holes to let the birds feed do not have anything protecting the top of the hole so water can get in all 8 of those holes. Small sticks can be pushed through the metal grate so the birds can perch and feed from the middle holes, but the lower 4 holes are partially covered by a metal lip on the base, so there is no place to attach a perch. The metal lip will also hold water so the bottom layers of seeds will either sprout, rot or both.
My fixes to the above problems:
Found a metal lid from another container that will fit over the filling hole. This will be held on by a rubber band looped through the two vertical metal pieces used to hold the hanging loop. Bend the hanging loop ends and discard. Tie a three foot long piece of heavy braided fishing line (like spider wire or other tough line) through the verticals. Get a cheap, large round plastic salad bowl with smooth sides and drill a small hole in the bottom center. Thread the fishing line through a button or any small object and loop the line to secure it about 1 foot from the feeder.
Thread the fishing line through the hole in the salad bowl, open side down. Put a dab of sealant at the hole to water proof. Also seal the holes in the top by the screws.
The bowl will hang over the feeder and keep most rain out. It will also deter squirrels because their weight will tip the bowl and they will fall off.
Got a very cheap plastic plate about 1.5″ greater radius than the feeder’s base from Walmart. Drilled a small hole through the center of the plate and through the bottom of the feeder. Drilled a few drainage holes in the feeder and the bottom plate. Used a self tapping screw and a washer to mount the plate to the bottom of the feeder. Used an s-hook to hang the feeder from a fishing line tied between a tree and my house.
To keep the squirrels from hanging on the fishing line to get to the feeder, I got some 1/2″ plastic tubing, cut it into about 16 one foot lengths and threaded the line through the sections. When a squirrel tries to hold on, the tube spins and drops it to the ground. Feeder is mounted so that it is greater than 8 feet to anything the squirrel can jump from. You might want to put some vaseline on the plastic tubes too.

For several years I have used only Perky Pet products: hummingbird feeders; Perky-Pet Mason Jar Wild Bird Feeder for water; and the Birdscapes 369 Safari Triple Tube, 6 lb capacity. I was concerned that the No. 114 does not have perches, but it works perfectly, as the birds just lock onto the wire to feed. This smaller size is also better for summer feeding, when the birds do not need the large amount of seeds that they eat in winter.
SQUIRREL BAFFLER TIP: I learned this a few years ago—-I coat the lid of the feeder, the hook it is hanging from, and the tree branch if that is where it is hanging, with vaseline with hot red pepper heavily sprinkled on the vaseline. Only a squirrel new to my yard will approach the feeder twice! Squirrels HATE red pepper. First I tried mixing pepper flakes with the bird seed, but that did not deter the squirrels. I was hesitant to use vaseline, afraid the birds would be harmed by contact. So, after applying vaseline to different parts of the feeder and hangers, I watched the birds carefully, and none have ever touched the vaseline, so no harm to any birds. I only apply the vaseline to the tree branch, hanger, and TOP of the feeder, not anywhere near the feeding openings or body of the feeder. Try it—you may be surprised!
Before using the vaseline trick, I watched the squirrels hang upside down and try their best to get at the birdseed, but they cannot because of the way the feeder is engineered. The lid, however, sometimes loosens, dumping the seed, if the squirrel works hard enough. But with vaseline/red pepper, they don’t even try.
I’ve also noticed an increased variety of birds coming to this No. 114 feeder—even a woodpecker returns every day. A river park is close to my neighborhood, so most of the birds stay at the park, and it is a treat to have anything other than Little Brown Birds visit!.
Obviously, I am sold on Perky Pet products (in spite of the cutesy name!) and will buy more feeders as I spread them around my yard.

Ordered 2 feeders, they arrived in the same box loose and hitting each other, no packing materials at all. Naturally, one was already broken and wouldnt hold seed. Acrylic tube is light and feels like it will crack the minute you touch it. The metal cage seems fine, but because of the way the hanger is designed, the top is very difficult to get on and off. Didn’t even hang them up. I put them back in the box the same way they arrived and returned them immediately.

This amazing feeder has survived a tough winter! We had to modify its design (see photo) to allow multiple birds land with ease and eat at the same time (i.e. birds must eat more food & quicker than usual in order to retain their body-heat-reserves during extreme weather conditions, e.g. -20C with windy snowy white-out conditions).
We have decided to purchase additional bird feeders for our friends & relatives, in supporting “Love Your Mother Earth” Neighborhood Campaign (see below for details).

I have had this feeder for a month, have LOVED having it, and would definitely recommend it…BUT I did have to jerry-rig it a bit. I used to have the Perky-Pet Copper Panorama bird feeder, but had to take it down because it was attracting too many Mourning Doves. I switched to this feeder, hoping it wouldn’t attract so many unwanted perching birds…within minutes (literally, 12min) of putting it up, the little song birds came in droves! Chickadees, Finches, Goldfinches, Warblers, Titmice, Nuthatches, and Wrens (I used to have a lot of Cardinals at the old feeder, but they don’t seem to be able to access or just don’t like this one). Woodpeckers also love it! The activity is almost non-stop, with as many as 5 birds on the feeder at once, and many more in queue in the trees!
BUT, it also attracted Red-Winged Blackbirds, which can somehow hold on sideways and eat out of the tray…They went through a full canister of birdseed in 48 hours. Instead of playing the whole take-down-put-up-take-down game with them (which ultimately didn’t work on the Mourning Doves with my last feeder), I attached plastic-covered metal wires diagonally across the bottom ports (3×3 squares, corner to corner). In theory, the wires should block them from being able to physically bend forward and access the seeds, even if they can still perch…and so far so good! Haven’t seen a single blackbird, and the song birds don’t seem to mind the new additions at all! Attached are pre- and post-wire pictures.

Yeah…..this is NOT a squirrel proof bird feeder as advertised. It is sturdy, decorative and the birds can easily eat from it. But so can the squirrels.
