I ran across this title accidentally and it intrigued me, so I looked it up and it sounded like fun. Was it ever! The blurb’s comparison to Knives Out is much more apt than to Thursday Murder Club, but I know that’s an often-seen comparison lately.
Ernest Cunningham writes self-published books on how to write mystery books – the sort you find sold as e-books for $1.99. He has never written a mystery book himself but insists on following rules set out in Ronald Knox’s “10 Commandments of Detective Fiction,” 1929. Set in Australia (Stevenson is Australian), the Cunninghams are a family well known to police departments, and Ernest’s father was shot and killed while attempting a gas station robbery – or was he?
A family reunion has been set up to take place at a ski lodge, and Ernest reluctantly goes. Someone gets grotesquely murdered, but nobody knows who the victim is. Police arrive, then a snowstorm blocks everyone from leaving. More deaths occur.
Ernest is telling this story and sets out at the beginning to tell you in which chapters (or pages if reading in print) murders appear. He is determined to follow Knox’s rules, and always tells you the truth as he understands it at the time, though as with the best mystery books, you might overlook vital clues.
I found this an enjoyable read. Reviews here run hot and cold about it, but I found the approach refreshing, the characters interesting with surprising depth, and the plot super-twisty without feeling artificial.
A tip – when I first opened the book on my Kindle, it started at the Prologue. But when Ernest referenced an “Epilogue”, I had to back up to read that, as well as Knox’s rules.

This book has a lot of good- It does feel very knives out, It’s not the darkest or scariest thriller, and it had an interesting narrator. Overall I enjoyed this book
The issues I had are as follows; This book was confusing – maybe this was just a problem specific to me but some of the details and the way it was written made this hard to follow at times. The characters were challenging to keep track of, partly because there were so many, and partly because so many weren’t of great importance. It was slow to start, I wasn’t fully absorbed and committed until around the halfway point.
Like I said at the beginning, the book was good overall, and I may read the next book that this author puts out.

At first, I did not particularly like the way Benjamin Stevenson wrote this book. Then I was so involved in the story that he was telling me that I completely forgot that I did not like his writing in thought between lines of the story. It totally works! Great story, all the suspense, and a true story? Maybe? Everyone in Ern’s family has killed someone. The Cunninghams are all together at a ski resort awaiting the reunion with Michael, Ern’s brother, who is being released from prison. The whole family is there, step-family and exes included. Then a body is found and from there more bodies until the dramatic conclusion with such a twist you will not ser it coming. Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone was such a fun read!

As the title suggests, this book is chaotic. An oddly fun kind of chaotic, but chaotic all the same.
It can’t be stressed enough that everyone in Ernest Cunningham’s family has killed someone including Ernie himself. With a narrator who breaks the fourth wall (and an author who knows which format of the book you’re reading…) and delivers his testimony with dark wit, it’s a good time. Unfortunately, I couldn’t follow a dang thing.
I blame a hectic month for my inability to retain any of the information being presented more than the book, but I just kept forgetting I was reading it. By the time I got back to it, I’d forgotten where I was. The writing/delivery is super fun and maybe if I’d chosen the audiobook I would have been more engaged. Wrong time for me I guess, but the hype is understandable.
