I suppose it’s time for me to admit to a cardinal sin when it comes to choosing books: I am a sucker for an interesting cover. I know not all books with good covers have a plot of equal greatness and I have read many a wonderful book where the cover would not give you even the slightest hint that anything vaguely interesting lay in its pages. It was the cover of this book that first drew me to it. The silhouettes against the warm yellow spoke to me of adventure and I wanted to know more.
The Sign of the Beaver is about the friendship between two boys: Matt, an America settler who has built a cabin in the forest with his father, and Attean, a Native American boy. When Matt is left at the cabin whilst his father goes to fetch the rest of the family he is alone for weeks. During an unfortunate incident with a bees nest, he meets some Indians of the local Beaver clan. Matt meets Attean when the chief of the Beavers makes a treaty with Matt: reading lessons for Attean in return for food. Over time the boys’ friendship develops. Attean teaches Matt how to hunt like an Indian and provide for himself.
This book is meant for children but I enjoyed it very much from an adult perspective too. I imagine it would send a positive message to children about friendship and breaking down boundaries. I certainly plan to give this book to a child in my family who will enjoy it.

I felt like I was learning two things in this book: First, how I could survive off the land if I was stranded. Second, the greatness of the American Indian’s culture.
It was a very fun book. The plot was always moving somewhere and I felt like I was always learning something.
I read it in one day because I couldn’t put it down!

I am the father of 6 young boys and trying to read ahead of them… Wish me luck. This was a really enjoyable to read. The good points: encouraging account of a young man trying to be industrious taking care of himself and preparing a place for his family. He repesents himself well as events turn poor, and still has a spirit of doing his best. The bad: heavy on the “white guilt” for how the Indians were treated. It happened, but not sure it is my personal fault. Funny observation: for all the high and mighty outlook of the author, she (accidentally?) included “indian-guilt” for how they treated women (semi-dismissive… identifying menial tasks as “squaw work”). So i guess everyone gets thrown under the bus so it’s ok. Spoiler alert (if you are a young person, please honor the request to stop reading now – if your parents let you read this you would enjoy it more to not see what’s is coming) two things concerned me: the boy allows a wandering hobo-type to stay the night in his cabin with him. The hobo ends up robbing him so I hope a lesson is shown, but you may want to review where “stranger danger” comes in. Also, there is the account of the death of an expected baby at the end of the book which may weigh heavy if that relates to your personal story and I could see it making the book too heavy for some kids.

My grandson had to read this for his summer reading at school. This is a great story for young children
to learn about the early settlers in the northeast arriving to build their cabins and farm the land of the previous Indian tribes that were there but were made to sign a treaty and give up their land.
The story of a young boy that was left by his father on their newly purchased land to protect it from others that might claim it while the father goes to bring the rest of the family.
The great adventures between the young boy and his newly found Indian friend that teaches him how to hunt, fish and take care of himself in the wild.

Matt and his father aim to settle uncharted Maine. Matt’s father is set to go get the rest of the family in Massachusetts. Matt will be on his own for six weeks.
The six week voyage turns out to be more than 4 months. During this time Matt has to face many dangers natural and man made. However he soon discovers that someone has been watching over him. Is this new comer friend or foe?
At the age of 12 Matt has to make thought decisions that mean life or death in this unforgiving world of Natives, animals, and beasts!
I have read this book 12 times! It gets better each time. Worth 5 stars! Please read!
