The visual images were clear. I could see what was going on. But there were too many storylines and characters to keep track of.

Las historias que componen el libro son buenas; como en anteriores novelas, Towles es un excelente narrador, en un inglรฉs culto y claro.

    Table for Two: Fictions
    by Amor Towles
Reviewed by Peggy K Potter, M.L.I..S

Bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow has hit another home run just in time for summer vacation reading. This book consists of six short stories and ends with a short, 218 page novel. The short stories all take place in New York City, have interesting characters, take place in different time periods, and average 30 pages each; the perfect length to read at the pool. They are all different, with surprise and satisfying endings.

The novel, almost short enough to call a novella, takes place in Los Angeles in 1939. Evelyn Ross, is the mystery that unfolds slow but sure on a train traveling from New York to Los Angeles. We come to know the beautiful, young Eve through everyone she meets, both on the train and in L.A. The first thing people notice About Eve is the three inch scar from the top of her cheek bone to the top of her chin. Eve does not explain the scar or try to hide it and no one she meets asks how she got it. โ€œWhatโ€™s your story?โ€ Eve asks people of interest. Those people are so undone by someone who listens closely with real interest that it is life changing. Some of those whom she meets are a retired L.A/Chicago cop and a very large former matinee heart throb. Another is Olivia de Havilland, age 23 and making โ€œGone With The Wind.โ€ at the time. Everyone has a story and the reader will be sad when these stories are finished.

Well written with many surprises. No endings to the story, you made up your own. Iโ€™m not normally a fiction reader but I enjoyed these stories!

I wish I had Towles’ gift with language so that I could adequately express the pleasure that his writing brings. After reading just a few pages of “A gentleman in Moscow” I realised that this writer was special. In that book he conjured up a story from as unlikely a setting as it is possible to find. The book shone with his erudition, his knowledge of history, the arts and the finer things of life. A table for 2 replicates these skills, firstly with some intriguing short stories and then with a longer but still short novel based on “Eve” whom we first met in “Rules of Civility.” This time we can marvel at Towles’ in depth knowledge of Renaissance art but, once again, it is his ability to create believable characters in multiple different settings that really impresses. He can “hook” the reader within one page and this gift is remarkable. As an older man who has loved to read for many decades, it is now rare for me to find a book which I do not wish to end. A table for two is such a book.

Table for Two is a superb collection of short stories & a glorious novella. I enjoyed the plots, characters & Towles’ literary style. I always feel as though I’m “in” the story & can easily make each unique journey with them. I’d recommend this book for young & mature readers. This book is hard to put down.

Established fans of Amor Towles once again will enjoy his incredible facility with the language and storytelling magic. As for the topics addressed in each of the stories, itโ€™s a bit of amix bag. I find him a little bit under-informed and this hamhanded when trying to handle the subject of alcoholism and alcoholics, for instance. Then there were other times when I found the stories entirely transcendent. But rather than say which stories I found 100% satisfying, Iโ€™ll leave that to others to discover for themselves, as that would tend to be a subjective reaction, I suspect. Recommended!

Amor Towles is my favorite contemporary writer! I loved this collection of short stories and a novella. The short stories are mostly historical fiction, but even his writing harkens back to another time. He takes the reader on a journey of the human condition with his trademark witicisms and humor. He saved the best for last. Eve Ross returns (Rules of Civility) in an thrilling novella noir that I could not put down! Highly recommended!
