It doesn’t even matter that history was lost on me when I was in school. In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon shares about mostly people I wouldn’t have learned about; the lesser known people in history. In this books she teaches you about so many important people who made such positive impacts. She has a great writing style that makes them easy to read and so enjoyable. I highly recommend this book for yourself or anyone you know who enjoys reading about people who have had positive impacts in this country.

**Book Review: “The Small and the Mighty” by Sharon McMahon**

In “The Small and the Mighty,” Sharon McMahon unveils the remarkable stories of ordinary Americans who have shaped history in profound yet often overlooked ways. This book is a celebration of the unsung heroes—those who aren’t typically found in textbooks, from telephone operators to schoolteachers—who embody the spirit of resilience and courage.

McMahon’s meticulous research brings to life a diverse cast of characters, including a woman riding a white horse down Pennsylvania Avenue, a young boy detained in a Japanese incarceration camp, and a formerly enslaved woman determined to reunite with her daughter. Each story is rich with emotion and detail, showcasing the struggles and triumphs of individuals who faced adversity yet continued to strive for a better future.

What makes “The Small and the Mighty” truly captivating is McMahon’s ability to weave these narratives into a cohesive tapestry that highlights the complexities of what it means to be American. The tales of a poet on a train and a teacher navigating her relationships with adversaries reveal the nuances of humanity—where wealth is not just measured in money but in love, resilience, and the pursuit of justice.

As readers delve into these pages, they will find themselves inspired by the improbable champions that McMahon introduces. Each character feels like a familiar friend, illuminating the path toward a more just, peaceful, and equitable society. The book serves as a reminder that greatness often resides in the stories of those who strive to make a difference, no matter how small their actions may seem.

In conclusion, “The Small and the Mighty” is a thought-provoking and uplifting read that redefines our understanding of American greatness. Sharon McMahon’s storytelling prowess shines through, making this hardback edition a compelling addition to any bookshelf. Highly recommended for anyone who seeks to discover the hidden narratives that have shaped our world.

I loved the stories and the random facts throughout- but I did find it a bit hard to go back and forth between the people. You were submerged into a story and then there was a tangent… once I figured out that pattern, it was easier to follow. However, I love the hope and realization that you can do good in this world by just doing the “next best thing”.

Sharon McMahon’s The Small and Mighty is an absolute gem that breathes life into often overlooked snapshots of history, showing how seemingly minor events and individuals have had significant impacts on shaping the course of the United States. This book is a tribute to the average people who, through small but mighty actions, sparked a series of small actions that set off a chain reaction, ultimately leading to a major turning point in history.

What truly sets this book apart is McMahon’s storytelling. She doesn’t just present historical facts; she brings you into the very scenes she’s describing, making you feel like you’re standing beside these figures, witnessing their contributions first-hand. Her vivid writing makes it easy to imagine the emotions and struggles of these individuals, even if you’re not a history buff.

Her sense of humor and sassy tone at times (facts don’t need your approval to be a fact!) adds a layer of entertainment to the book. McMahon has mastered the art of throwing in random but fascinating tidbits that not only educate but also delight—like the unforgettable story involving Gouverneur Morris and a whale bone, which will forever change the way I think about whale bones!

This book shows that it doesn’t take a revolutionary or a president to make a difference. Often, it’s the everyday people that have a profound effect on the nation’s direction. Through McMahon’s engaging and accessible writing style, you’re reminded that history is shaped by individuals who dared to act.

Overall, The Small and Mighty is a must-read for anyone looking to learn more about the lesser-known aspects of U.S. history in a way that’s both informative and entertaining. The chapters a short, but all connect together, creating a story that could have been dry history lessons into an enjoyable and eye-opening experience. Highly recommend for everyone!

As a longtime follower of Sharon McMahon on Instagram and an O.G. member of her book club, I waited with eager anticipation for this book to come out because I knew that if Sharon was writing it, it was going to be fantastic. To say she did not disappoint would be a gross understatement. This book is a love letter to all the unsung heroes in America who have quietly gone before us, making a way for this country to become what Sharon says it is when it is at its best: Just. Peaceful. Good. Free. In a time when those characteristics seem very far from what we are as a people, reading this book is soothing to the soul and empowering to the spirit, and such a powerful reminder that the American experiment is a rollercoaster with ups and downs, but always moving forward toward its original promise. An assurance I need during these difficult times. Listening to Sharon read her own book was comforting, like listening to a story told to you by a good friend. Her voice is soothing. She brings you into the lives of the people she writes about in a way that makes it feel as if you are a part of their story. I haven’t read a physical copy of the book yet because I knew that the first time I dove into its pages, I wanted to hear it all directly from her. I cannot wait to pick up my hard copy and read it all over again because it is simply that good.
