    I really enjoyed this book. I was able to relate to a lot of the struggles that are mentioned in this book, and I really appreciated that there is actionable advice all throughout the book instead of just fluff. It is a quick read, but something that I want to come back to and study in more depth. I feel like this is something that I can use to help me set goals and actually make improvements. For any men who feel like they often self-sabotage, this is a great read to help you get out of that cycle. I would recommend reading it straight through first, and then going back and reading it more carefully, taking notes, setting goals, and taking action on the items that are mentioned.

    From the beginning the author lets you know that he was in the position of self-sabotage himself and has found a pathway out. In this day and age I think it would be rare to find a man who has not struggled with self-sabotage at some point in their lives so it is nice to see someone be honest with this and to help others out.

    I was particularly moved by the section on negative self-talk. It is one thing to be honestly critical of yourself as it is key to growth as a person, but this is not the same as needlessly beating yourself down over and over.

    Negative self-talk can easily feed into other self-destructive behaviors such as procrastination and perfectionism, which are two sides of the same coin. Perfectionism is the unattainable goal and procrastination is a seemingly rational response to being presented with (what appears to be) an impossible task. Something this book dives deep into.

    I could go on and on. I just find the subject energizing. Who doesn’t want to be better? Maybe you do self-sabotage, but that doesn’t mean you need to be defeated!

    Beyond just discussing the subject of self-sabotage and its negative effects it begins to outline effective solutions in a variety of areas of life that the reader can begin to implement at their own pace.

    Overall a nicely formatted book that is pleasing to the eye. A few minor formatting issues with some of the bullet point lists, but a nice and easy to read.

    Having experienced self-sabotage myself, I was interested in learning from Richard Garraway’s insights. Richard writes with clarity. He clearly defines and explains what he means, including self-doubt, procrastination, perfectionism, fear of failure and remaining within one’s comfort zone. He discusses root causes and provides approaches to overcome negative influences.

    The book looks at self-reflection and delves into the aspects of our lives that hold us back, but then offers approaches to identify our strengths, and take opportunities that arise to live a fulfilling life. The author has experienced self-sabotage, and he writes from personal experience and the experience of others. Can this book change your life? Possibly, and it is certainly a first step in overcoming the difficulties many face. While Breaking the Cycle of Self-Sabotage for Men is clearly intended for men, it offers insights that are equally relevant to women. Knowing more about ourselves can only be positive.

    Great guide. Really enjoyed the takeaways and tips for overcoming the self. Habit building and ways to utilize them to make them long term were my favorite part. It does come off a bit repetitive with a lot of the ways to overcome things are similar, growth mindset, build resilience, have an accountability person. But these are all items needed. Overall recommended.

    Us macho, manly men typically don’t want to do what’s in this book. We naturally strive to be self-sufficient, strong, and in charge. Asking for help is a sign of weakness. Yet in maintaining that stubborn resistance, we make things much harder for ourselves. This well-written, very well-organized book has the key knowledge that can make life a lot easier for us tough guys. I particularly liked the sections that dealt with the following topics: understanding the specific ways we handicap ourselves; practical ways to reframe unhelpful thought patterns; how to loosen up the grip of “perfectionism paralysis”; why it’s ok to feel fear, anger, or sadness; and big ways to change one’s life for the better (“Transformation doesn’t wait for tomorrow”). For any guy that wants to “embrace uniqueness” this short book is a “must read.” Highly recommended!
