If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the glamorous world of New York society in the 1960s into the 1970s, then what better guide than that society matron himself, Truman Capote. Such Good Friends dives into the world of Truman and his swans, focusing on his relationship with Lee Radziwell, who lives in the shadow of her sister, Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
The research here is impeccable to the minute details – focusing on the glamour and wealth and style of these. seemingly, idyllic lives. The research also delves the psyche of Capote and Radziwell, cleverly using the fictional character of Marlene, an outsider to this world who works for Radziwell and develops a teacher/student relationship with Capote. Through is character, we become the proverbial ‘fly on the wall’ for the central friendship, as well as all the secondary and tertiary goings-on in this usually closed-off world.
The writing is wonderful and spot-on, with hints of Capote’s wry and truthful commentaries.
Highly recommend for any looking for an alternative entry into the fascinating world of Truman Capote.

I had slightly mixed feelings about this novel as a literary work, but as absorbing fiction, delving into a particular time and place, I found it very entertaining, as well as impressively researched. It does exactly what you want a book of this type to do, which is to make you feel like you are in the rooms where the action is taking place, whether they be Park Avenue apartments, expensive restaurants, the foyer of the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, deluxe hotels or whatever. Greco tells you how the rooms are furnished, what the people are wearing, and what they’re eating and drinking, right down to the brand names. He also does this very gracefully, so that the abundance of detail doesn’t become an overabundance. As what I’d call “commercial fiction” as opposed to “literary fiction,” I’d say the book is a success, and for the most part, it’s *very* enjoyable. I also liked the characterizations of Truman Capote and Lee Radziwill. Both were convincing and well-rounded. There is a third, wholly fictitious, character named Marlene who works for many years as Lee’s cook and housekeeper. She’s the POV character through which we see the other two (she’s also a budding author, who takes an informal, private workshop with Truman). Her development as a character is more problematic, depending as it does on a number of highly unlikely circumstances. However, I think that including her in the book was a wise choice, in terms of its structure.
I won’t go into too much detail about why I think this novel never reaches its full potential as literature; maybe the subject even precludes it. Stephen Greco was working with a well known pair of main characters and a well-established set of facts. He didn’t have much room to manœuvre. Even Capote himself couldn’t have managed it, certainly not in the period described here, when he was on a downward spiral, personally and professionally.
One of the highest complements I think I could pay the author is to say honestly that all the effort he expended on this book doesn’t show. This is a smooth, enjoyable read, and it wears all the research that obviously went into the writing very lightly and gracefully.

I thought I had figured out the plot’s surprise ending, chapters before it actually occurred. However, kudos to the author for providing red herrings.
I look forward to reading more from this author.

I loved every word in this book and the way the real characters, Lee and Truman, were intertwined with the fictional character. Having observed NYC in the 70’s and participated in the 80’s, it was like a walk down memory lane. I have such warm, comforting feeling of that time period and this writer brought it all to life again for me. The twist of the fictional characters life story in the final chapter was shocking and beautifully crafted. Hooray! What a great book!

I found the narrator cold for the most part and her backstory boring . so its no wonder that I only began to identify or have any interest in her until the last two chapters. I’m not a young woman so it had nothing to do with that. I think the author wanted to make her a voice we believed but non intrusive. I’m well read but didn’t know half of the places, objects, or language in the book. I knew all of the genuine quotes from other sources. I never got a good impression of Lee and I still don’t . I guess just like her less than lustrous acting , she is also the same in print. I’m giving it three stars because nothing else, not movies, interviews or other books got me to sob over Truman’s death the way this did. He came across flawed but loving and kind and someone who had the greatest courage to be exactly who he was. For a man in that era , that was remarkable. Plus he was a genius .

The book was missing pages; after page 120 the next page was 313. Later in the book I found page 153 and sequential pages and another page 313. The 33 pages that were missing completely were about what Lee was doing at the time of the JFK assassination.
I found the chain of events were affected by the confusing book assembly.
