i love the way lynn described how liz changed after the break up, how wes deals with the d£ath of his father and so on. im sad for what theyve been through (i bawled my eyes out) BUT i love how they got their happy end. ever since ive read better than the movies, ive created such a bond with those characters. i relate so much with libby that i could see myself in her situation. and the most of all i LOVE THAT WE FINALLY GOT WES’S POV. I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. (now dont come at me and say that “this isnt liz” “this isnt wes” well ig we all would change so much after what theyve been through ig?)

I waited, and waited, and reread Better Than the Movies again and again while waiting. The wait was worth it. Five stars. Thank God because sequels can be scary… I was so worried…I shouldn’t have been….
Lynn Painter is a phenomenal story-teller. If your new to her work, just know you can expect lots of laughs, leg kicks, mild screeching or shrieking, misty-eyes, dopy-ass smiles, and swoony sighs – oh and don’t forget epic playlists.
All that being said, Fellow Readers, this one hits different. There was a more “adult” or “serious” undertone compared to its predecessor because the MCs are young adults now and dealing with more mature issues then they have previously, which I thought was handled with care and consideration. Don’t let that scare you off! It still includes those hilarious, flirtatious scenes we all know and love between Ms B and her Mr B, but just know there was “heaviness” this go around. It also includes a whole new cast of characters, as well as brings back familiar faces. Over all, I thought it was really well done. I can’t imagine the pressure this author felt to make a sequel for the beloved Bauxbum and Bennett but I think Painter pulled it off.
In short, this book is Nothing Like the Movies…but everybody knows, the book is always better.

Better Than the Movies is one of my favorite YA books, so I was both nervous and excited to read the sequel. Lynn Painters writing style never disappoints and it always feels like a romcom movie. I love all the music references in this one!
I loved seeing how Wes and Liz navigate their complicated relationship in college. It’s messy, it’s heartbreaking and it’s definitely complicated, but I still loved every second of the journey. Their romance wasn’t perfect, and I think some readers will have issues with that, but I think that’s what makes it beautiful! I love how Wes had to earn his HEA, and man…did Liz make him work for it.
Highly recommend if you love romcoms, lots of music references and a good time. Lynn Painter’s books feel like sunshine, and this one is no exception. For readers who loved Better Than the Movies, but wished it was dual POV, this one is for you!

Have you read Better than the Movies? I got it on Netgalley 3 years ago and I’ve been in love with Wes and Liz since. They are such a fun couple to root for and I love that they’ve become so popular that Lynn Painter decided to tell us more of their story.

This entertaining and interesting book was a real pleasure to read, like all her books are! The main and supporting characters are all well worth getting to know and I wish each one would get their own book. Nothing Like The Movies is the long awaited sequel to the best selling novel Better Than The Movies. It was so good to catch back up with Wes and Liz, the cutest couple alive!
I have to admit that the first half of the book left me feeling very melancholy… life threw some serious curve balls (see what I did there) in our favorite couple’s direction, and I was VERY worried there for a few hot seconds.
Wes’s story was heartbreaking. I cried literal tears for him. But I felt even worse for Liz… something about being lied to for so long really bothered me, even though Wes felt like he did it for the right reasons.
The real love story didn’t pick up until pretty far into the book, which allowed for a lot of tension to build. I particularly enjoyed Wes’s inner thoughts the very most in this book. That boy is seriously swoonworthy! Lynn wrote this continuation of their story beautifully.
SPICE
Nothing Like the Movies is a Young Adult novel, so the spice is minimal. We get 2-3 tension-filled make out scenes, all of which gave me butterflies! The tummy twisting innocent love left me twitter-pated. It was perfection!
I want to add that while this is Young Adult, it does contain language and mentions of underage drinking. This facilitated good conversation between myself and my teenage daughter, who cannot wait to dive in now that I am finished with the book.
HAPPY ENDING
YES! FINALLY! I wasn’t expecting one of the very last plot twists… it kind of came out of left field (again with the baseball pun, ha ha). But the end is picture perfect for Liz and Wes as a couple AND for Wes to finally find peace with his family situation.

Thank you Lynn for writing a book that facilitates connection with my teenage daughter. It’s rare to find a Young Adult novel that keeps me engaged and gives me perfect angst and tension but is also appropriate for my teen to read. You did this perfectly, and I thank you for that.
