the plot twist was amazing. and at first I thought it was a side character telling the whole story and then you see later on that he has a more important role taking care of Alicia I definitely recommend everyone read this because it was so good and a suspense that left you wanting more and to read more.

I give the book 3.5 stars. I think it is a little overrated. I think due to the unpredictable circumstances in the book people liked it but it was long and drawn out and really didn’t hold me or grip me.

Second, I think understanding Gabriel more would have helped. We had a better understanding of Kathy but not Gabriel or why he did what he did.

I also think there were parts of the story that were unnecessary drawn out. And the plot twist was so dramatic. The connection to the Greek mythology was a nice touch.

Bookclub 3 words – Betrayal, Silence, unpredictable.

The Silent Patient, Alex Michaelides’ bestselling psychological thriller, offers an intense journey into the depths of trauma, obsession, and betrayal. It tells the story of Alicia Berenson, a successful painter who is accused of murdering her husband, Gabriel, in cold blood. After the incident, Alicia becomes mute, refusing to speak a word about the murder. Her silence becomes a mystery that captivates the public and the media, earning her a reputation as “the silent patient.”

Enter Theo Faber, a forensic psychologist drawn to Alicia’s case. Intrigued by her silence and determined to understand her motivations, Theo takes a job at the mental institution where she is held. His goal: to help Alicia find her voice again and unravel the mystery of what happened on that fateful night. However, as he delves into her life and psyche, Theo discovers that his own dark past and obsessive tendencies make him deeply vulnerable, and the line between therapist and patient begins to blur.

Michaelides’ writing is atmospheric and gripping, layering suspense with carefully placed hints and misdirection. The novel’s pacing builds suspense beautifully, with short, sharp chapters that keep readers on edge. The narrative oscillates between Theo’s perspective and Alicia’s diary entries, adding depth to the plot and a haunting quality to Alicia’s silence.

One of the most notable strengths of The Silent Patient is its twist ending, which is both shocking and well-earned. Michaelides carefully constructs the story to ensure that readers are left reeling as the truth unfolds. This twist not only changes the perspective on previous events but also forces readers to question the reliability of the narrator—a hallmark of great psychological thrillers.

Although some may find the characters slightly underdeveloped, particularly those on the periphery of the central mystery, Michaelides succeeds in making both Alicia and Theo complex and compelling. The themes of mental illness, trauma, and the search for truth are explored thoughtfully, though some aspects feel more surface-level compared to the novel’s twist-driven appeal.

In summary, The Silent Patient is a thrilling read with a satisfying blend of suspense and psychological depth. Its success lies in Michaelides’ ability to manipulate readers’ expectations, making it a highly recommended choice for anyone who enjoys thrillers with unexpected twists and complex psychological layers.

It is difficult to review this book without inadvertently revealing too much. I can usually see a startling plot twist or a surprising character disclosure on the far horizon, but the stunner plot twist genuinely shocked me. It was original and inventive, but disturbing. The reader embarks on a journey with the book. A psychological thriller that is equal parts detective story. It begin with an earnest forensic psychotherapist, who is hired to treat a mute patient at a facility, who hasn’t spoken since she shot and killed her husband several years ago. Theo is determined to be the one to reach Alicia, who was once a famous painter. He theorizes that if he can renew her desire to paint, perhaps he can break her silence and heal the trauma that’s impeding her voice. This is the crux of the tale. Why did Alicia murder her spouse and why won’t she speak? The reader is lulled into believing that the story will lead down a particular path, and then, suddenly, the narrative becomes something else entirely. I was disappointed that I’d been fooled by the misdirection, but this was cleverly done by Michaelides. Several red herrings were introduced by the author, making many characters into potential culprits, capable of misdeeds. I enjoyed the psychological aspects of the book, and found the discussions regarding early childhood development and trauma exposure to be compelling. This is a dark and atmospheric tale, in which art and weather figure prominently. Actions and motivations are as mercurial as the humid heat, the respite of falling snow or an angry, careless brushstroke. The book concludes abruptly, and is left open-ended, which is decidedly frustrating, given the powerful reveal that was the point of the entire endeavor. Michaelides mentions his wish to revisit Theo’s character again in the future, so perhaps more will be forthcoming. The story is already provocative. The ambiguous, unfinished ending just invites more intrigue, speculation and individual interpretation. This is a chilling mystery and a worthy debut.
