I am a Computer Science professor, not a journalist. This book articulates the concerns about AI with regards to automatically generated news content, social media filtering algorithms which create echo chambers, and also censorship. As a moderate to conservative centrist, I don’t care for the obvious political bias in the text, but it’s enlightening to see how the other side thinks.

You can tell from the first chapter, at about page twenty that this guy is a professor of journalism, not a professor that teaches on technical topics. While I understand that people need training in journalism, getting a journalism degree to work at the NYT probably isn’t the wisest. Some of the concepts the author touched on that were interesting would have made for a good book, such as the impact of misinformation on the democratic processes, but fails to pass the gut check of “Why is mis/disinfo trusted more than government?” If the author had spent more time exploring relevant topic matter rather than detailing clown-fish analogies as a riff off of Mr. Murdoch’s offhand remarks, this book might be a solid four instead.

Good journalists are not made in the classroom, and if you’re in journalism class reading this book, just switch to CS/IT my dude. Most journalists would earn more accolades in telling the substantive truth rather than seeking laurels.
