This is another addition to what is now a considerably long series of short story anthologies that supposedly centre around a particular theme. At times this thematic orientation has worked well. It some collections, though, it has been interpreted quite loosely. In the case of this collection the tales aren’t exactly ‘origin’ stories for the most part. With some exceptions they are generally stories involving younger versions of characters before they meet ‘their’ Doctor.

However, that doesn’t devalue them. They are all generally entertaining and do provide a look at these well-known characters from a somewhat different angle.

There are eleven stories included, most of which involve the Doctor’s companions. Interestingly, the Doctor’s two most commonly fought foes, Davros and the Master, also have their own entries.

There are also a couple of shared stories; the, perhaps, obvious combination of Amy and Rory as well as Yaz only appearing in a story from Ryan’s point of view.

Inevitably the Doctor makes numerous appearances. Frequently these involve a companion meeting a different incarnation of the Doctor than that which they later become associated with. The problem with these meetings of characters with alternate Doctors earlier in their timelines is that the stories frequently have to end with the required ‘mindwipe’. Apart from being utterly expected, this also tends to get a little tedious and repetitive across a collection of short stories.

However, having companions meet other versions of the Doctor is also quite fun and there is definitely some type of novelty aspect to these encounters.

Written by Katy Manning, herself, the Jo Grant story is, perhaps, the highlight of the collection. It adheres to the ‘origin’ theme better than most by providing a quite comprehensive look at how Jo comes to join UNIT rather than just focussing on a particular incident. It also seems to be a little bit about the author herself, as if the lines between her and her character are somewhat blurred. There is also a surprising and entertaining guest appearance.

Other standouts are probably that of the Master/Missy, which ties in nicely to a particular television episode, and Davros’ tale which reveals how the Doctor has influenced the ‘origin’ of the Davros we know.

Early adventures of various characters from the universe of the Doctor who series. Some of them are timey wimey and confusing, especially the ones which feature companions meeting the Doctor before their actual original meeting. Of all the stories featured my favorites featured Amy Pond and Rory Williams having an extra dimensional adventure, Madame Vastra in a crime solving caper , and an origin story for Missy.
I also enjoyed the one featuring the early days of Jo Grant. These were all entertaining tales of what made each of these characters great companions for the Doctor.
