Higgs’ Book brings up several interesting ideas concerning the role, and considerations, of restoration ecology in a modern world. As a student of Conservation Biology, I took a course that required the reading of Nature By Design.
Several things stood out, both positive and negative.
A) Higgs explicitly states that his background is one of Anthropology and Philosophy. He “warns” the reader that he is taking a philosophical approach, and he means it. As a student, I found him to sometimes ramble quite a bit – sometimes so much that I would skip over a few pages until I detected that he retraced his steps back to the thesis.
B) Several theories are thrown out concerning the importance of history, or rather historical fidelity aka historicity. He elaborates that this is a major part of restoration ecology that many seem to ignore. Sometimes he spits out too many terms, big words, and speculation for anyone to really follow.
C) He does a good job of going into many of the problems that modern Restoration Ecology faces, and takes an important focus on the cultural and societal role in restoration. This has been a recent upcoming issue in the scientific literature, and I suspect will rise in importance & popularity in the years to come.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. Sometimes he recounts his adventures almost like reading something from John Muir or Aldo Leopold. He brings to light many of the issues that restoration faces, and questions much of the scope of ecology concerning the degree of inclusive / exclusive considerations.
My only major criticism is that sometimes it was a bit verbose, and at times he delved too deeply into inquiry for the reader to follow the thought pattern. Nonetheless, a good read for students of restoration ecology, or those interested in conservation in general.

Eric Higgs warns in his book, Nature by Design, of the danger of imposing a particular vision on the natural environment based on preconceived notions of its history and its role in relation to human habitation at a particular time. This is a much thornier issue than might at first be imagined. An example he uses is the density of the tree cover in Jasper National Park, which meets public expectations but is not truly representative of the natural history of the place. Where we most often come into direct contact with this conundrum is with municipal master plans for nature writ large or small, which, however well intentioned, invariably tend to turn the scraps of nature in our daily lives into park-oriented play areas; and what we are often left with is a degraded natural environment criss-crossed with trails, or a sanitised imitation “nature”. Eric’s example of this is the appalling Disney fakery that has replaced nature with theme park experiences convincing enough to instill a new expectation in the public of what nature really is. Another shortcoming of master plans, of course, is that interested parties always manage to find their way through the good intentions to achieving their own ends. That being said, we must use the tools that are available to us to protect whatever we have left. Nature by Design is an important book that challenges us to rethink our ideas about nature and our role in the natural world. It is a work that is scholarly and humanely accessible to readers who are not scholars, a book of science and anecdotes blended seamlessly into a vision of our world that combines the small details of our daily lives with sweeping vistas of nature on a grand scale. It is a book that is readable and useful in helping us form a better relationship with nature. It is the perfect handbook for the time of crisis we find ourselves in and the perfect companion to the iconic works of other champions of the natural environment John Muir and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
