Don’t get me wrong, for the average joe who is trying to learn how to use perspective in their art this book will be informative, and it will clear up a lot of misconceptions that other books will indeed induce. However, I’m a bit of a perspective nerd with about 15 books on the topic (and even more pdf perspective books on my hard drive), and there was not one observation or instruction in this book that I couldn’t show you in one of them. The practical drawing part of this book was very limited, but then the book is more about how to think about perspective anyway. I’ll warn you also, that I don’t think that the beginner is going to understand the bulk of this material.

Go get a few straight forward, basic perspective drawing books first, and get some practical drawing experience. Then if you are still interested, read this and drink deep. I found it to be very interesting.

I was pleased with this book overall. The first few parts more informative and contained a lot of information but came off far more philosophical than instructional. As an artist, the last two parts held the most value. I will read those a few times until the info is ingrained in my brain. I understood basic principles about perspective, in that everything went to a distant point. This book cleared up a lot of misconceptions and explained why it is you do that as well as how to place those points effectively. It’s a very useful resource.

While I feel as though this book does offer an interesting take on perspective, it’s not quite as useful as I wanted it to be. It’s definitely more limited than the official website or back cover would have you believe; “The most complete perspective book written”, “This book also corrects dozens of misconceptions perpetuated for centuries” – very bold claims I think you’d agree.

What this book does offer is a somewhat philosphical way of looking at perspective that essentially unifies all possible applications of it (drawing, movies, real life) and while this is quite interesting in itself, if you’re someone looking to study the subject to draw better – or any practical use for that matter then this book is not going to help you.

There are some interesting sections it has to be said though, for example the effect that certain angles or convergence has on the viewer etc. But ultimately this is a book based on theory that lives and dies based on how interesting you find the central premise. Other things to bear in mind is that the binding seems very cheap and certain ‘Chapters’ in this book are a single page long. (I’m going to assume the author isn’t a seasoned writer) Never the less, if you are already familar with the subject and you would like a ‘new perspective’ on it (pun intended) then this book will scratch that particular itch. This should be seen more as a supplement for those who already have the basics down.

**For those of you who want to learn perspective from scratch as an artist or designer I would fully recommend; Scott Robertson’s ‘How To Draw’, Marshall Vandruff’s video lectures or the free online resource ‘drawabox.com’. I’ve found All three incredibly useful.
