I’ve see several DVDs about Dr. King and the movement of the sixties. Dr. King in the wilderness is another great insight into Dr. King. This is a must see video for all ages to see the terrible and stressful times our nation was going through. Watch and compare how far we have come but also how very far our nation needs to go. Dr. King influenced me and my generation. May we all strive to follow his example.

I really learned a lot about Dr. King that I didn’t know. I rented it first from my local library. I enjoyed it so much that I had to own it.

This must be seen. To witness a King)y spirit taking shape; taking action. Action for Love, Peace and Equality. Amazing that to watch someone give all for the betterment of you and I. Us, We – from specific platforms he had as a goal the Us, the We, the river of humanity — and he could see us without (all of our) sometimes hateful & ignorant actions. Wonderful documentation.

I enjoyed the archival footage and interviews with giants in the equality and racial justice movements, some of whom are no longer with us. Dr. King’s expressions and speaking were beautiful, moving, and well illustrated in the film.

I saw this on Martin Luther King day on a cruise. I am from Mississippi. I have met Mr. James Meredith who is one of the men in this movie. I learned things that I did not know before. I don’t know if I was the first to have tears spilling down my cheeks but I do know that everyone there was silent during the movie, everyone cried and grieved over the loss of Dr. King. If you haven’t seen it, please watch it. Live footage, live interviews of the people who lived the life with him.

Dr. King would probably be uncomfortable with “King: In the Wilderness” a hagiographic treatment of the three to four years before his assassination when the civil rights movement was beset by internal and external conflicts. Unrest in Northern cities, the war in Vietnam, and the rise of the Black Power movement compels King to change his strategy of solely addressing Southern racial injustice. Instead, he elevates the movement’s work nationally by linking civil rights to the issues of poverty and militarism.

The film presents King’s evolution of his “triplets of evil” activism by using archival footage combined with a wide range of friends, staff and supporters discussing this significant shift in the movement’s energy. Their oral history is largely respectful and deferential, despite what they say were conflicts within the leadership to King’s expanded focus. It’s hard to know what they really thought at the time since their perspective is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of King’s assassination in Memphis, TN, and not to challenge movement dogma (or speak ill of the dead.)

Given that tone, it’s not surprising then that no ordinary black people of that time are interviewed for this film. Likewise, no journalist is asked for their perspective since this film isn’t intended as a documentary or a work of investigative journalism. We hear from Joan Baez and Harry Belafonte, but not one Freedom Summer or voting rights group active during that same time. Momentum to register blacks on the heels of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was usurped by King’s new strategy. It was a tactical and strategic mistake that reverberates politically today, but one which this film ignores.

It’s easier to use King’s assassination in Memphis to freeze that conversation in time thereby sparing King’s legacy a critical look at the enormous consequences of such an untimely and ill-fated decision. A tender, but prejudiced look at a great leader.

They cover the subject very well and appropriately and they don’t whitewash anything. They go over his wonderful qualities very well but they also cover his adultery and faults as a human being. As far as its quality as a documentary, I would say that even if you aren’t interested in the subject or content you should watch this anyway because it is so brilliantly conceived and masterfully put together
