A wonderful documentary of an era that produced so many artists who would influence musical directions for decades to come. Expertly presented by Jacob Dylan. His interviews showed his respect not only for the artist but also the music. He’d ask a question then let them talk. The way he and his band of friends reproduced the music of old was spectacular. My highlight was their take on the Neil Young written Buffalo Springfield song “Expecting to Fly” – worth the purchase price alone!

As well as covering a history of this unique southern California rock genre of the 1960’s, this film shows how it influenced the music of the time, even affecting the Beatles and Eric Clapton. Jakob Dylan hosts and takes part, recording new interpretations of some of the songs with other modern artists. Very interesting, and I recommend it highly if you enjoy the music of The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Beach Boys, CSNY and the Mamas & Papas.

First, It’s amazing they got all these people together, including the guy who wails over the credits (spoiler alert). I’ve heard all these stories, I’ve read Barney Hoskyns, I’ve been a huge fan of this era of music since I first smoked a joint when I was 15, so of course I really liked this. There are some interesting nuances and stories that are revealed even if you have heard many of the stories before (like Brian taking Roger’s speed, never heard that one.) Jakob and Co. did a great job without crossing into the cloying side of nostalgia. And damn he sounds like his dad sometimes (when speaking, he sounds like himself when singing, in his smooth baritone). If you found this you’ll probably like it. RIP Tom, we love you.

I love this documentary. Jakob Dylan does an amazing job interviewing the greats that he most likely grew up with and it somehow adds an undescribible attribute. I am enamored by his voice and the idea of him and contemporary musicians performing these classics. I could really feel the vibe, like how it was to be there in those days and times. It made me wish I had been. Highly recommend.

The Wallflowers Jakob Dylan interviews and organizes the best of old and new in this tribute to the Laurel Canyon music scene in the mid-late 60’s. The Byrds, Mamas and Papas, Beachboys and more performed by some of our contemporary favorites. Great viewing and sound quality. Music available on CD.
