Any game that lets me recycle to win and turn into a coffee cup to run away from my problems is a good game in my opinion. I didn’t even realize it was supposed to be horror until I saw it somewhere else because this game had me laughing more than screaming (unless you count the sound effects cause those could be kind of creepy and when I got my first look at a poltergeist I kind of froze up cause I thought they were totally invisible and didn’t have a from but I glued one and, yeah, lets just say they’re pretty freaky), but who cares when you’re having fun, because boy oh boy did I have so much fun. And it’s rare for me to play a game over a second time after finishing it the first, but I got right back into it to complete the story only using mimic abilities, and then I think I’m going to do it again only using human abilities. Played a lot like Bioshock too which pleased me since I love those games. Navigating zero gravity was a little frustrating sometimes control wise, but I liked the concept and thought it was a good addition at least in theory. I saw someone say they though the story was bad, but I like stuff like this. Fringe was one of my favorite shows, and reading emails gave you a lot of insight into the problem solving methods of the scientists, plus other developments on Talos other than nuromods setting up a good environment. The fact that there were also recycling grenades gave me giddy joy, and weapon wheels always make me a happy gamer. Best game mechanic ever created if you ask me. They always make it so easy to quickly access weapons and abilities. After a while I wasn’t using my wrench as much, but I still used it for a few things here and there, and instead of having to go to a menu to equip it you just temporarily equip it on the weapon wheel and then go back to your other stuff when your done. Easy peasy.
And I love that it doesn’t really matter what you upgrade because there’s always a way. So you didn’t find this key card. Hack it. So you can’t lever open this door. Glue gun your way up to a cat walk and drop in. So you can’t hack this door. Mimic your way in. So you can’t lift these heavy things out of the way. Throw a recycle at it to clear a path. Excellent design decisions. This game totally rewarded me for thinking critically, looking around, and exploring. Just the way I like it. This one goes up in my top five games just from shear simple enjoyment. Not too hard (I always play first playthroughs on Normal or medium mode), not always too easy, and just the right amount of good clean fun.

I love this game!
First let’s get the negative out of the way:
1. This game has some technical problems. I’ve had to quit to the main menu on several occasions after a quest would not finish, a prompt would not appear, or my HUD stopped responding. I’ve played the game for many hours now so while this is a bummer to be sure, it’s not a deal breaker so long as you SAVE OFTEN and have backups.
2. This game should look and run better on a PS4 Pro. The game, while amazing and fun is a bit of a disappointment in performance and graphically. The art design is awesome, as the space station is a marvel of amazing design, however this is betrayed by the subpar implementation of the game engine, especially on a Pro. Also disappointing is the lack of HDR. This game would be ion another level with good HDR implementation. Really a shame Arkane didn’t go the extra mile for PS players.
Neutral:
I see people complain about lack of enemy design variety, but my mind quickly brushed past that (or made an excuse for, depends on how you look at it) and thought it made a lot of sense to have an alien species take on a more “cohesive” state. Of course the designers could have used the typical enemy styles we’ve seen, but I believe, in showing restraint that what we are left with is just enough variety so as to be a little more believable and not end up as the “bruiser” type, etc.
Now onto the Positive!:
1. This game is hard sci-fi set in a mysterious and imaginative take on alternate history. A lot of people call it “Bio-shock in space” and while that is appropriate, its also a bit reductive as Prey differentiates itself enough through world-building, mechanics and setting . The game puts gameplay up front with the first person perspective and an emphasis on powers. Gunplay, while serviceable is not the focus here.
2. Many ways to get creative with solutions to problems, I won’t spoil anything, but the game gives you (and practically tells you) to experiment with toys at your disposal, which can lead to some cool ways to bypass the games core design. It’s fun and elevates the game in interesting ways as you start to think “outside the box” when approached with a goal. This is very fun!
3. An absolutely stunning realization of a working space station. Arkane went to great lengths to make the space station feel very real. The facilities, systems, structures and workings are all accounted for and fully realized to a degree of thoroughness and attention to detail that just isn’t represented often in video games. As a result the space station feels not only lived in, but fully functional and logically constructed. This is huge in any game but especially when you introduce the fantastic, as it grounds the player.
4. The Art deco-sci fi theme is stunning and beautiful. I love art deco and the implementation of it here is to be lauded, it’s fantastic and cohesive throughout.
I encourage any and all who love space themed sci-fi to check this game out. It has an interesting story, serviceable graphics, amazing art, fun abilities and an absolutley amazing rendition of a space station and its inner workings. My highest recommendation!
