Incredible game! I had a blast playing this three times to get all the achievements. The battle system is really fun and the environments are great. There’s so much customization to the different character classes and spells & abilities they can use that it’s worth multiple playthroughs to try different builds. The voice acting is kinda not great sadly but this was never meant to be a AAA remake. I think they remade this game well for modern systems and it actually sold well, so here’s to hoping for more Mana games in the future!

Overall a great-looking remaster of the SNES classic “Seiken Densetsu 3” (“Legend of the Holy Sword 3″), the successor to the earlier title, as named for the US release,” Secret of Mana”. I played the original and this remaster matches it for the most part and is nearly as fun to play. Good graphics, rather gorgeous here and there, superb remastering of the original soundtrack without killing the vibe and impact, gameplay is mostly the same ol’ action JRPG style of the original. Beautiful, vibrant scenery; catchy, melodic and emotive BGMs; lovely character models; all the warm and cheery, cartoony/anime style of the Mana series. The main characters are just beautiful. Too bad that they didn’t give Duran and Hawkeye a bit of facial hair, haha! They look fantastic, nevertheless. Crossing my fingers for an overhaul and remaster of Heroes of Mana now, the RTS prequel to Trials of Mana, love that game (and I’m probably asking for too much, dohoho). Class changes are now reversible a limited number of times via in-game items, and class outfits are retainable, sweet! Now I can make the Magus without having to tolerate the distasteful and unsightly Magus outfit.

And we get to the cons. Game balancing has been tipped towards making the game easier from what I’ve seen so far, and recovery items are more plentiful and effective than the original, a change which I dislike. The balance change was taken a little too far, I feel, but at least the game remains fun to me.
Local two-player mode is out the window, and just why? Crossing my fingers for it to be added in an update later on. This game looks like it got somewhat rushed at some point, you can tell that it needs more work yet they really did a spectacular-looking job on part of the graphical design, a real treat for the eyes.
Lastly, Duran’s hair isn’t big enough. Just kidding.

Some minor gripes (this game needs a lot of polishing): sound effect design was partly carried over from the SNES version, and while most effects sound alright, some sound too lo-fi and awkward, just don’t feel like they belong, or too “wimpy” when it comes to some attack sfx. Character animations look very dated. The main characters’ battle animations feel clunky, merely an aesthetic negative. Some decorative textures that can be seen inside castles look like glossed up morbid things taken from Doom hell levels, what in the flying f***?! It’s weird and jarring, not to mention unfitting for a “very non-Doom” game. The graphics and visual effects of the environment look rather plain up to a point compared to other modern games. They did fine in remastering the character select screen BGM that occurs when starting a new game file, but I never felt that that music even befit the game, too bad they didn’t swap that out. The elemental sprites get static models that look very odd and unappealing compared to their 2D graphical equivalents from the SNES, PS1, GBA, and DS games.
Japanese voice acting sounds nice but could use a bit of rework, it feels a bit on the bland side, though the story writing/dialogue might be partly to blame. I don’t remember the text too well in the original, I’d have to play it again. Forget the English voice acting, I am so not forcing myself to tolerate that cringe fest, I appreciate Square-Enix giving us the Japanese audio option.
I’ve rambled on too much on the trivialish stuff.

* Anyway, to fans of the original, definitely worth a play through if the game is on sale. To any newcomers: the game is short and alright, you might love it if you dig simple old JRPGs, and I mean simple, the story lacks some depth and can feel a bit choppy. Characterization is weak at times. Battle mechanics are also simplistic. They had to squeeze a lot into a few kilobytes of memory in the days of SNES/Genesis cartridges. Absolutely crazy what they did with so little back then when you look at Seiken Densetsu 3, Final Fantasy VI, and Chrono Trigger.
In this game, the story arcs of the main characters and what end bosses you face will depend on the characters that you choose at the start (you get to pick three out of six), giving the game some neat replay value and setting it apart from other JRPGs.

I’d love to see a re-imagining of Heroes of Mana and Trials of Mana like what Final Fantasy VII got.
