Doom on Switch is awesome. Its an absolute blast to play. There are slowdown and audio glitches audio glitch but they far and few between and don’t ruin the game. When playing with the Joycons I found increasing Horizontal Sensitivity to 30, Vertical Sensitivity to 22 and Look Smoothing to 85 greatly improved the controls. The Pro Controller works great with no changes, and for reference defaults to 40 Horizontal Sensitivity, 32 Vertical Sensitivity, and 90 Look Smoothing. Both the Joycons and Pro controller have separate profiles which can be changed without effecting each other.

The game runs very well, yes graphics are not as good as pc or ps4, it is really good for a handheld, I have been enjoying it, very little frame rate drop too, only happens occasionally during really busy moments of game. Online community is quite active too.

I consider this game a must-have if, like me, you don’t have a PS4/Xbox/PC that you’ve already played it on. I’m a few hours into the single-player campaign and I’m really enjoying the intense bursts of action and the apocalyptic atmosphere of Mars. It’s incredibly satisfying to tear through hordes of demons and feel your power and inventory grow. It’s a real pleasure to have a AAA first-person shooter title on a Nintendo console, and to be able to take it anywhere.
I’m having more fun with the online multiplayer than I ever imagined. You’ll always want to play one more round, it is addictive. I love the variety of game modes beyond simple deathmatch and the many different weapons and playstyles that you will employ. Playing as a demon is a blast. I think multiplayer has the potential to be popular and long-lasting on the Switch because it will no doubt be the best FPS experience on this console for some time to come.
There had to be some performance cutbacks in order to make this game run on a portable console, which was an impressive accomplishment in itself. The game runs at 30 frame-per-second instead of 60 and the resolution caps out at 720p and will sometime drop to handle more stressing moments of gameplay. Those who place a big emphasis on graphics or are used to playing it on a more powerful system may be turned off by the downgrade. Personally it hasn’t affected my enjoyment at all. I’ve been playing it mostly on my TV and it still looks and plays beautifully. In handheld mode, the main problem is that in-game text might be too tiny to read – hopefully they correct this in a patch.
I wish they included gyro motion aiming like in Splatoon – maybe they could still add it later. It has taken a little bit of adjusting to get used to the two-stick controls again. You may want to change the sensitivity and motion blur settings until you are comfortable. I’ve mostly played on the Pro Controller and I think that’s the best way to play.
Multiplayer requires a 9 GB download. If you buy the game digitally then that is another 13 GB download. It can really eat into the Switch’s 32 GB of storage so I thought this was a good time to buy a micro SD card to add more space on my console.
Despite the graphical downgrade, Doom is a massively fun and singular FPS on the Switch. Multiplayer is a blast and I expect to play countless rounds in the weeks and months to come. This game is an excellent and essential addition to the Nintendo Switch library.

Overall – this game is awesome, especially for the Switch.
Great single player campaign with lots of secrets to uncover and items/upgrades to unlock.
Multiplayer is really fun, competitive and it’s super fast to load into a game and get playing.
The graphics are pretty awesome for the Switch – it’s not a cartoon game or simple sprite side-scroller.. it’s a full-on 3-d environment, scaled down from it’s predecessors. I have not played Doom with higher resolution, so it really does not bother me knowing the graphics are “muted”. Once you get into the game, it becomes really fun and engaging and you don’t even pay attention to the graphics. The bad part about the graphics is that there is no field of view (FOV) adjustment which makes things look like you are playing on a 1:1 aspect ration instead of 3:4, or that things look a tad bit narrow. I hope that Bethesda Studios integrates more options to adjust the graphics beyond motion blur and chromatic aberation.
This game is great – I would recommend it.

Gameplay is great. Frame rate dips sometimes but the fact you play it portably is great.

Full disclosure: I have a PS4 and i’ve never played the new Doom before. I like the series but I just wasn’t interested in trying it. However, once they announced a Switch version I instantly had flashbacks to when I rented the SNES Doom port as a kid. And I had the same exact thought I had back then: “that cover art looks so cool”. I couldn’t resist picking this up, knowing well that it was a full priced port that lacks the “good graphics” of the other consoles.
And I regret nothing. This game is awesome. I think no matter what system you get this for, you’re gonna have a great time. That said, I do recommend:
– don’t adjust the brightness when the game first prompts you to, it’s a trap. I set it so low based on the instructions that it was impossible to read the text. You can adjust the brightness later under the video option in the settings menu (it’s referred to as ‘gamma’).
– I prefer the motion blur on high (which is the default). I think it compensates for the degraded visuals. You’re mileage may vary, but I think it looks pretty darn good that way.
– I turned the horizontal and vertical sensitivity down a bit (settings > controller). Doomguy runs around like he’s on roller skates and I felt like this helped me play better.

Good game

A thrilling game and a surprisingly excellent adaption for the Switch. While this version of Doom does not have the jaw-dropping visuals you would expect on an XBOX One of Playstation 4, it does not seem to lose any gameplay value. This version also maintains a heavy metal soundtrack to add to the aesthetic of the game. The fast paced, heart pumping, intense shooting of the game stays true to the series, and suits itself well to the portable nature of the Switch. I have put in about a dozen hours of the game, with never more than an hour or so at a time.Being able to play in short stints or on-the-go is a great feature, especially with a high intensity game like this one. Overall, it was a wonderful surprise and a much needed adult shooter title for the Switch.
